5 Months with LG V20: Is it any good?! (full review)

  • I have spent many months with the LG V20 and here are my final thoughts in this full review. I answer what sticks out and ultimately if it is any good. It is a great phone that can easily be overlooked but it should NOT be forgotten, even in the midst of the release of it's cousin the LG G6.

    I don't really understand when reviewers say the second screen is a gimmick. It was one of the primary reasons I bought the phone. Aside from the functionality of controlling music, toggling quick settings, etc. it constantly shows the time, date, battery, and any notifications that are waiting for you. For me, nothing beats glancing at my phone and seeing exactly what's waiting for me and if I need to turn it on or not. There are other ways to do this, of course, but the AOD on the S7 is a joke and the Note 7's implementation really wasn't much better.

    • @powerfultoa7
      @powerfultoa7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yea it's basically like having Apple's Touch Bar functionality on a phone and it makes a lot of sense given the limited screen area of most phones

    • @briancarnell
      @briancarnell 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For me, it was a gimmick. Tried it for a couple days and found it too distracting. Disabled it and never looked back.
      The Note7's AOD was *much* more useful.

    • @Gravage
      @Gravage 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Brian Carnell I'm not really sure how anyone can say the Note 7's AOD is more useful. Tapping the notification icons was hit and miss and it STILL forced you to unlock the phone after you double tapped a notification before you could actually view it. There was no direct access to flashlight, wifi, etc. Not even in the same league. I mean, you found the V20's AOD distracting, but not the Note's? Yeah, okay buddy.

    • @briancarnell
      @briancarnell 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When I am actively using the phone, the 2nd screen is a distraction. When I am not using the phone, the 2nd screen is too small to be useful. Gimmick.
      Note 7 AOD was much better implementation.

      I really don't get the "removable battery hype", and i believe that most people that scream for it don't use the "feature" at all.
      In the times of prettymuch non existent battery-runtime-degredation, quickcharge and powerbanks, i would trade the possible feature of a removable battery for higher waterresitance, better build quality and bigger batteries any day of the week.
      How is the hassle of buying an overpriced second battery from a sketchy chinese ebay seller, charging your phone, opening your phone, replacing the battery, waiting for the second battery to have finished charging, letting your phone discharge, replacing the battery again, only to have doubled lifespan in ANY WAY easier or more practical than simply using a 20$ powerbank worth 3 charges???
      And if its really about the degredation of the battery, you can replace the battery in 99% of phones anyway...

    Love my V20! Had it for almost 4 months now and it's just a beast! In my experience it has out performed the note 7 by a long shot. Always a Note series freak until I had no option but to return my note 7. I do miss my S pen but other than that this thing kills it in performance.

    I've had this phone for several months and personally, I love it. I've had no issues at all and I love the Quad DAC on the LG V20. I listen to music all the time on my phone and the music sounds better on the V20 than on my iPhone 7 Plus. The camera is great as well, especially when it's in manual mode. I'm glad I bought it and have no regrets.

    I guess it comes to what you like as far as taste. I found the phone attractive and not boring. To me iPhones are boring but because branding people tend to admire it. In the store I purchased it in, it was. right next to the pixel which I did find bland and very iPhoneish. So to me its a matter of taste. That being said I respect your opinion, we all view things differently.

    I've owned this phone for 3 months. The battery life lasts all day, and I'm constantly on it. I have one other battery charged and ready in my pocket if I need to switch the battery out. It is continually running home screen app extensions where I can access the app interfaces right on the home screen. The phone gets a tad warm, but its nothing major and it doesn't burn you, especially if you have a protective case, which you should definately do. The interface is certainly a small tiny bit laggy, but this does not delay productivity. The lag is mostly not noticeable. If anything it builds split second patience.

      Rooted, it's a great device, plus their is an aftermarket battery that's a little bigger in capacity. Sure there is faster phones, and much better spec'd devices, but to remove a battery in one button push, is priceless to me. It's sad you dont grasp the concept of getting what you pay for.

    Thanks for the the thorough review Erica! I think I ultimately bought the phone in March because of the audio/video recording features you laid out here (great singing btw!). Besides some puzzle games, I don't really do any gaming that's very graphics intensive so the battery life has been really great for me. Especially since I'm charging anytime I'm using the Hi-Fi DAC in the car.

  • @metdee9153
    @metdee9153 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I had the V20 until just last week when I traded it. Had to because it was such a terrible experience for me as well. I had extreme performance issues, especially when I opened the camera. Things would crash very often. I couldn't stand the lock and power button being on the back. The front facing camera reminded me of my old Samsung S5 which distorted my face and created so much noise especially in low light. The light bleeding from the secondary screen was extremely noticeable especially in the dark. It was also the type of phone you had to restart everyday. Not to mention build quality of the phone was very much leaving something to be desired.
    There were things that I loved about it. The IR blaster for one is huge. I used it just about every day. It was refreshing to have an LCD panel after being on AMOLED for a while. It was also very nice to be able to remove the battery. The 64 GB base storage was also nice along with the SD card slot. The wide angle camera on the back was great for when I went to a few college football games. And finally the DAC was very enjoyable when I used my Sony MDR- 1000x headphones with the V20.
    Overall, however, I would not recommend this phone to a friend or colleague. Even with disabling all of the bloatware included in the Verizon variant, I could not get the performance I was expecting from a snapdragon 820. Even when I compared it to my older OnePlus One it would barely if at all beat it when opening apps.
    Great Review though, Erica! Very thorough and well balanced!

      I upgraded to a LG V20 from a Galaxy Note 3 (yes, 4 year old phone now). I was kinda forced to since my Note 3 didn't charge properly, and I tried multiple batteries that were in good working order and multiple chargers and cables with no luck. I love my V20. Ordered it off of Amazon for $596 for the Silver version. It is the Taiwanese V20 H990DS Factory Unlocked model with dual SIM card support and Bang & Olufsen audio tuning. Mine DID come with Bang & Olufsen headphones in the box. Some U.S. models don't have any headphones in the box, or so I read. One interesting thing was that the H990DS version actually does come with a U.S. 110 Volt Wall Plug Charger, and works perfectly. I was worried that my V20 came from other country, I wouldn't be able to charge it with the included wall charger. The Quick Start Guide and Warranty Card are in Traditional Chinese, so I can't read it. Phone itself started in Traditional Chinese, quickly had it switched to U.S. English. I do have some LCD screen bleeding on the main panel and on the second screen up top, but it is only noticeable in the dark. Battery life is OK, but I wouldn't say stellar. It's no better or worse than my Note 3, which I think kinda sucks considering this phone is 3 years newer with a 3 year newer battery and same exact size battery (3200mAh).

      Vector Sector I use my international Dual SIM V20 (H990DS) on T-Mobile USA with no problems. No Wi-Fi calling or any other specific T-Mobile features though. However the Actual T-Mobile version does, but you won't get the B&O headphones in the box unless you get the Asian international models.
