  • I demonstrate how to use and tie the GHOST/MACRAME knot. This knot utilizes a doubled, doubled rope to create macramé-like weaves which allow the entire knot to fall apart under certain circumstances. The benefit of using this knot is to allow a person, or persons, to descend the "fixed" end of the rope. Once at the bottom, the last person removes the safety mechanism (a carabiner) and descends the rope, pulling the other strand of rope once at the bottom, alternating between it and the other strand, decoupling a series of small slipped knots until the entire rope disconnects from itself and drops freely down to the climber(s). It's called a "Ghost" knot in canyoning because it allows canyoners to setup the anchor (the knot being discussed), descend, use the knot's functionality to disconnect it from the anchor while below it, and retrieve the rope, leaving the area without a trace (not equipment left behind); like a ghost, everything and everyone easily vanishes at will!

There's a safer way to retrieve your rope by using a carabiner around a tree for example then onto itself, and b4 you descend on your munter or standard 8 or rescue 8 etc you also add retrieval line to the carabiner then when you reach the bottom just pull on the retrieval line until you have the biner in your hands and remove your rappel rope and pull it down from around the tree

This is all legitimate and true. I was simply looking to overview the method at its bare bones state. I would encourage all future viewers to look into John Martinez's safer methods! Thanks for the comment!
