I live in Thailand and I agree, to most Westerners ears this music sound disjointed and unpleasing. However, that's the point. It's designed that way to become hypnotic. After spending time here, I've started to 'zone out' when I hear this music so don't knock it, it becomes like a strange, free psychedelic.
Polyrhythms!! Polyrhythms, everywhere!!! There's A LOT of 6 and 7 against 4 as well as 5 against 3 going on. There is rhythm, you just need to know what to listen for.
I can't find anything to criticize. As if the Burmese are expected to receive a classical western musical training... Eastern music is fundamentally different. The music is thought to have more freedom in structure, and to allow for more improvisation. Not to mention being based around different scales, so even if you have refined relative pitch, this would sound strange without more exposure to eastern scales.
Trust me, the talent is there. But you are right--it IS wind chimes.; the scale, as on a regular piano, does not exist. It uses a sort of pentatonic scale, but also the notes are tuned pure. Our notes are tuned dirty, and off-track, or else our Western music would sound out of tune. This music here is about purity and clarity; not about song or drama. It is actually more pure than our own music Someone wrote "Mama, ice cream man is coming!" and this is also very accurate here.

You are tone deaf. You can't expect to get the music of another culture in five minutes, and if you don't it is not the fault of the musician. Go listen to some Burmese music CDs and you'll see they are far more sophisticated and nuanced than most of the crap you probably listen to on the radio.
@LilDrummerBoy74 I'm not really a fan of most of the music you listed, but i never said that 4/4 is the only good one. Sometimes it is. Have you ever heard "Question!" by System of a down? Its one of my favourite songs, and it isnt 4/4
@scottmarshall456 I said "fucking" , because I fucking can. I like a lot of songs with complex rhythms, too. But this is just to much. I'm not a stupid rap loving kid that likes songs that sound exactly the same all the way through.
@scottmarshall456 Thank you! I almost left a comment saying that this sounded awful before I read this. Then I had to really start paying attention to the sound. I don't know much about music theory but I think I started getting it...
@MrTherandom they have a construction crew take the roof off the house, then they take a crane and life the drums up so he can crawl exactly 1 foot from the drums so he can get out, or he just steps over it, but that would be to complicated.
you've just came to the music shop and told to the sellers "play on everything", right? That's not how you get the music. I seen this instrument in "One Giant Leap" movie, it sounds wonderful, then real musician plays it.
Some funny ass comments on here.. xHUTSEx and Mesmerlab got me laughing so hard. I hope that, if he is indeed still trapped in the circle, he discovers the proper rhythm to break free.
@CrispinDan Dude, all he said was that is sounds like an ice cream truck. It kind of does, it is just really beautiful music. What's your deal? Everything is chill.
The Music of Myanmar. Myanmar, a Thai gong with it. I invite Thai people in Bangkok and a store locator. The song was played ggg a g egac gagc gagc e d ge.
Great music, but sadly I would not advocate tourism to Burma at the moment. Please don't visit Burma, help the people by not lining the pockets of the Junta.
Guy is totally lost has no idea how to play this instrument. I could not play it either but I know when something sounds like an infant beating on pans.
@scottmarshall456 well there might be a little bit rythm and a little bit of something that sounds good, but thats it and mainly what I ask from music.
Holy shit, while I was listening to these instruments playing, I went into a sort of trance. I heard a voice in my head telling me to break out of it, and I kept in it and now everything is foggy. No i'm not on any drugs either, this music is truly amazing!
It seems a number of people can't conceive of musical expertise outside of western tonalities. These guys are great.

Burial I just can’t fucking believe it
Good thing I had a chance playing this instrument when I grew up in Thailand :)
ไม่ตั้งหัวกระทู้ Percussion thai land อ่ะ งี้ฝรั่งนึกว่าของประเทศอื่นหมดสิ

It sounds delightful after just watching subcontrabass saxophone videos.

@abecerra71 yeah, reminds me of one of those fisher price things with the two wheels and the stick a kid pushes around.
And we wonder where George Lucas got the idea for the keyboard player on Jaba's prison barge in 'Return of the Jedi.'

lol this is me when I'm messing around on an instrument I can't really play. I just hit a bunch of random notes.
Not even foggy really, I just feel like a turtle that just came out of a shell or a sort of hatchling coming out of a cacoon/egg. Fucking crazy!
@scottmarshall456 Why do you have to make everything so complicated? Its music not fucking physics! Sometimes a 4/4 is just the better choice.
အညာကိုလွမ်းပါရဲ့
Its hard to understand because of what we know in the West as music. They are using a different scale than our ears are used to.
Well, it sounds a little more atonal to me. While that's a whole art in itself, it's just not pleasing to most people's ears.
I think Stephen Perkins of Janes Addiction & Porno for Pyros make a recording with this instrument in PFP or Banyans records.
it's called progressive, the guy is as progressive as rain.
some guy in my office was playing this so happen it was bring your kid to work day all the kids where runing out side
f major, or better f would be the polar key. it's not tonal music, but that doesn't really mean it must be atonal
its because they only know how to play with themselves. the funny thing is is that everyone knows how to do that
The part till 1:11 hurts my ears... not saying it's not good playing/music, but it just sounds weird to me...
i found the same one at walmart for like 3 $ in the baby aisle it had 5 colors and sounds the same ... shit
Star Wars Cantina theme would fit right in here.
Circular instruments - no longer just for blue elephants in cantinas.
2:09 inspiration for the Hang Drum?
How are they even supposed to get out of there?!
what he's doing is very deliberate, and supposedly has rhythm, but that doesn't mean it sounds good.
this is awesome i wish i could my hands on these setup's, wow.....
probably cause these guys just smoked like 10 doobies. im sure there rythem is a little altered
@Goregrinding I see what you did there. BWHAHAHAHA :MEGUSTA: your comment deserves a damn ribbon.

@Blackhole519 It's because the time signature he is playing in is really irregular.

@insomniawillsleep uh.....yeah.....cause it's in THAILAND. which is part of ASIA.

The ice cream truck doesn't sound legit... Don't get ice cream from this man.
If he's considered good then my 4 year old brother is the best ive ever seen.
And this is how they get little kids in Burma to climb into strange vehicles
sound like the music in a scary movie before the main character gets killed
Lars Ulrich better watch out, he might be out of a job if Hetfield sees this
You're never gettin' out of that thing. Hope the seat doubles as a shitter.
အညာကိုလွမ်းတယ်ဟ
The problem is you guys listen with western ears.... Forget your program...
Pfft, he'll only do that when he is surprised by the loud sound of a gong.
best top comments iv seen in a while ahahahahahahahahha god i love youtube
Its looks so cool.....but one question: how the hell do you get out of it?
its just noise... theres no connection to any notes or rhythmic patern/...
Legends say he is still trapped in the circle.
I agree with you bro. You said so right! By the way, what are you saying?
@SherlockHolmes715 i think the same thing whenever i hear a jazz solo...
This is amazing, the structure and sounds, all the intervals! :)
complex rhythms or not...it sounds like a child hitting random notes
Holy shit, while I was listening to these instruments playing, I went into a sort of trance. I heard a voice in my head telling me to break out of it, and I kept in it and now everything is foggy. No i'm not on any drugs either, this music is truly amazing!
this was originally designed as a cage and was kept in the basement
Watch more anime. Stay away from what you don't know...like music.
@xHUTSEx he can't get the proper rhythm to unlock his cage, so sad
@scottmarshall456 You sir, rightfully deserve this top comment.
