Covered in mud, buried under myths: Red sand boa illegal trade | Mongabay-India x ALT EFF

The red sand boa is a non-venomous and harmless snake found in India. While its trade is prohibited by law, several bizarre beliefs and false narratives about this snake make it one of the most illegally traded reptiles in the country.
Researchers, wildlife rescuers, and forest officials raise the alarm bell to warn us about the myths and misinformation that fuel the illegal trade and harm a rather docile creature.
The story was supported by the Video Reporting Fund 2024 by Mongabay-India and All Living Things Environmental Film Festival.
