I've heard this story several times, such a terrible situation all around. Those girls were duped into an actual hit and could have also suffered a deadly reaction too. It's sad because he was actually a decent family man doing what he could to not be associated with the destruction of his family name. He used a different name on his passport and traveled commercial so his true identity wasn't even known until after he died.
@@silverghostcat1924 Nah, he also killed his dads brother when he became leader and his dads brother wasn't anything like this guy, he also seemed loyal. He just didn't wanna take any chances. Ironically, Kim Jong Un has two other siblings he hasn't killed, but one is a full-blood sister and the other half brother is considered "useless" so that could be why.
@@Ethan-wr2osyeah we're lucky we still get any videos considering he is a family man and also probably well off enough to just spend all his time with them but I miss them days too.
When the 2 women were arrested they spent a long time in prison. The charges weren't 'quickly dropped'. The court found them both guilty & dismissed their explanations of what happened.
@@MisterPrimordial I guess they are half right. That would be about 2 years in prison and most would agree that's not a "short time" depending on who you ask. I mean I know people who've done 15+ so to them, sure but to an "innocent" person 2 years is quite a long time.
I knew this story, but it was really masterful to tell it from the point of view of one of the girls. It's really clear how they both were recruited unknowingly for this.
Yeah, I heard this story, too, but I had wondered what happened to the girls. This whole thing was tragic, and this must be very hard for them to deal with, knowing that they had (unknowingly at the time) participated in an assassination.
@@lopachillayeah, I remember when it happened, and the most of what I kept up with was the part about the two women who did this awful thing. I thought that they were really guilty. I still think the one with the frogger in the attic that wanted to perform surgery on his victims is the craziest, most horrifying thing I've ever heard...
I found what Mr. Ballen said about this video very unusual. He said that most people probably do not know about this incident. I know about this one but I know about 1% or less of the other ones that Mr. Ballen posts.

You feel bad for the women? Oh no not the guy who died and is the only person possible who could change the now 70 years of hell for north Korean people. Lmao some people really don't deserve speaking privileges.
That's something out of a movie. I was expecting the 'prank show' to be a farce for trafficking, but it very quickly turned into a thriller film. Great storytelling, Mr. Ballen! The suspense was amazing.
I remember hearing about this in the news! As soon as you said the ‘third actor’ had ignored them and walked over to start the prank I knew something was off, and then I remembered this story. @@NygmaNL Yeah, they did. They also suspected that Nam had links with the CIA and Kim ordered his execution. But I am a bit skeptical about the CIA part. Does anyone have any other theory?
I remember when this story was first released to the public. A very sad use of poor and vulnerable young women. The horrific evil behind the act just infuriates me. The true criminal won’t ever face the justice that most of us ground ourselves on. This is probably the best description of this epic that I have heard. Thanks, John, for a fabulous retelling of this international “prank”.

Dude it’s like you were made to tell these stories. You’re so good at it and you draw us in as the story unfolds. You and your team are killin it in here on TH-cam! Nice job sir
right!? im convinced i know how he does it. he uses small maybe lies to give realness and substance. how they feel, why they did certain things, movements they did…much of these are likely impossible to know unless he watched footage or did interviews. Like i think he explained one time..he does a lot of research and then stews in it, basically letting his subconscious do the decoding. And because he knows himself, people and has attention to detail, he fills in the blanks with what likely anyone of us would do or feel. And since these little maybe lies dont change any of the story or facts, its a major win-win. Analyze this sometime, think of it from a logical standpoint…next story you hear, look for little details that a detective wouldnt know, but ballen fills those in with realistic behaviors and thoughts. Like a bank robber…he doesnt know the thoughts exactly, but hell say like “even though this was his 6th robbery, and should feel comfortable with the sequence of events, the recent discovery of his girlfriend’s pregnancy had Bill thinking of his future and mortality more than ever as he walked into the fifth third bank on the corner of arizona blvd and center street” In my example, it’s obvious ballen wouldnt know thats what he was thinking. but hed know the recent knowledge of the gf pregnancy and how that would affect anyone and invade and change their thinking. this may sound like i dislike mrballen. not at all the case. this is amazing storytelling. i loved wrestling too…i know much of that is “fake”….i appreciate the art
@@threestans9096 You nailed it on the head. I actually read an article about this a while ago, but it's great to see it presented in such a masterful way on this channel, in this form! On a related note to the story itself, I had a Korean roommate in college (this is in the US) who went to kindergarten with Kim Jong Un (yes, seriously) in Switzerland. She obviously had no idea who he was, but she clearly remembers one time when he tried to play with her on the playground, and she rejected his attempts to play. Since they were both Korean, her parents spoke with Kim Jong Un during some kind of parent visitation day (no, his parents were not there!), and found it odd that he was speaking in the form of Korean that an elder would use to address people younger. Later on, when they were no longer living in Switzerland, her dad happened to come across a newspaper article about Kim Jong-Il and his family. In the article, it spoke about how Kim Jong-Il's son was going to school in Switzerland, and there was a picture of him, and voila, the parents realized why the little boy they had met in their daughter's kindergarten spoke Korean in a strange way and didn't have any parents with him on parent visitation day. Just had to share that because it's such a crazy thing to happen..
I'm 37 and you make me feel like a little kid listening to his dad/mom tell him bedtime stories. I know you have your family and life but wish you could do this every day of the week lol; love your channel!!
I do remember hearing about at least part of this. It was on television, and the media had said the victim was the brother of the North Korean leader. I remember them saying someone had run up to him and sprayed something and that it was an assassination, but I never knew the whole story. Thank you for the story, young man, and thank you for your service. 😊
I am from Malaysia and I remember this assassination clearly. I never knew the story of how those poor girls were recruited though. Thanks for sharing! ❤
They're recruited as they're poor and desperate. But despite all this, working in movies and attaining fame is a lure which many girls from rich families fall into too.
@@encikasu8024 that's because either the victim wasn't that important even though he was Kim Jong un's half brother or North Korea and Kim Jong tried to squash it down.

When you showed the CCTV pictures, I knew what this was. It's a real shame the real culprits will never be able to be held accountable for it. These "crimes" committed by and for the government will always go unpunished.

Great episode, John! I think most of us remember this political assassination, but we had no idea how the young women were tricked into performing the act. What an elaborate, effective, and horrible tactic. Those poor girls. The way they were victimized and deceived probably altered the trajectory of their lives forever. Of course, being killed via VX was a torturous way to die. He had enough time to know he was going to die and probably knew his brother was responsible. Also, this reminds me of Navalny's more recent political assassination attempt with Novichok. Even though everyone knows about it because of the footage recorded on the aircraft he was on, you would be great at putting together the timeline and telling the full story in a compelling and interesting way.
The last thing I heard about it was that it was female assassins. My imagination of the incident was much cooler than the reality. No tight leather outfits, motorcycles or ninja flips. Bummer.
I'm going to let my 11yro and 8yro daughters watch this video,I need them to learn that no matter how much in need they are they should be careful with any jobs or people that seem trustworthy but they aren't.
I knew what this story was about the second you mentioned this girl’s background and being approached by a producer. Knowing a thing or two about clandestine operations, I’m sure you can appreciate how genius this operation was.
SO sad! And of course, nobody was going to believe them. The "producers" im certain were trained to spot the most gullible and most willing to go the distance for fame and 💴. Kim's brother didn't seem to be much of a threat but even if you could be it's a huge deal over there in the "other Korea"
There wasn't anything genius about the plan itself. The only genius involved was in identifying the right marks that would be desperate enough to be easily manipulated into carrying it out for them. And that's a trait that is common among most criminals. They are usually only truly talented at one thing; reading people and knowing if they're going to be susceptible to becoming unwitting accomplices or easy targets.

He used a different name on his passport and traveled commercial so his true identity wasn't even known until after he died.

Like a bank robber…he doesnt know the thoughts exactly, but hell say like “even though this was his 6th robbery, and should feel comfortable with the sequence of events, the recent discovery of his girlfriend’s pregnancy had Bill thinking of his future and mortality more than ever as he walked into the fifth third bank on the corner of arizona blvd and center street”
In my example, it’s obvious ballen wouldnt know thats what he was thinking. but hed know the recent knowledge of the gf pregnancy and how that would affect anyone and invade and change their thinking.
this may sound like i dislike mrballen. not at all the case. this is amazing storytelling. i loved wrestling too…i know much of that is “fake”….i appreciate the art

I dont know it and are just watching now but I'm guessing Kim Jongs brother?

Thank you John! I knew about this case previously but had wondered if the girls were set free since it was obvious that they had no idea that they were pawns used to kill someone.
Both women were released and both went back to their countries.
@@cnn787-i9e thank you. I’m so glad!

Mr Ballen right on time for a good Sunday entertainment and knowledge learning of just how crazy and evil the people around us can be…. Sundays wouldn’t be the same without the strange, dark, and mysterious.
Hi John! As soon as you mentioned the airport and showed the video of the so-called prank I knew what it was about. I'm glad the two girls had the charges dropped, it's so sad that they were used that way. I don't listen to the podcasts because you do such an excellent job of storytelling and the way you are so animated throughout. Until next "Strange,Dark and Mysterious." Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Much love from Canada 🇨🇦
If I was in Siti's place and my hubby divorced me, I would take alimony/ child support money from him and invest it in educating myself in order to become something worthwhile. Or even if I earned, I would invest the money in making my life better by educating myself or learning vocational skills.Being an actress/ model is not everybody's cup of tea.
@@Veronica.A. But he wouldn't pay her anything, that is why she had to leave her country to find work.
@@catherinewilliams3850 that's because either she didn't ask him to pay her alimony or even if he refused, she didn't move to a family court or high court for legal help. She's an innocent soul who needed the correct person to guide her in life. But, in reality it's not only the poor and desperate girls who fall into the lure of films and stardom, but many rich girls too. It's a sad world out there.
@@Veronica.A.or, you could get a job and pay for yourself. Child support is fine so long as it's going to the child, but, why should a man pay for you to live? It's not your money. Just bc the law allows it in your country doesn't mean it's right. It's no wonder more and more men avoid marriage. I'm glad we don't have that insane practice in the UK.
@@marshallmatters1526 well, yeah. She did get the job and she could have changed her life by herself. Also read my comment first before being an OG keyboard warrior.I really pity ur wife or the girl who has the misfortune to marry a narcissist like u. It's better u remain single. Jeez🙄
Best way to learn about (not) current events ! I’m like a history idiot ! Thank you for these stories
I remember when this actually happened. Kim Jeong-nam was supposed to take over the country, but had fallen out of favour with his dad and was trying to live a relatively "normal" life without the association of being Kim Jeong-il's son. Great storytelling and clever title. :)
One of the theories is that the victim was actually aware that Kim was trying to kill him and was looking for asylum in USA, where he was starting to work with the CIA, bc is one of the only places where North korea have it really difficult sending his killers. If u are interested i can send u the link to the video :)
@@mayrithaps send away!
@@ClaytonJonesImages hey! Aparently i cant leave the link in here, my comment keeps getting delete :c sorry, but if u are really interested, u can go to rotten mango and go down down, the video was upload months ago, and is called something like "2 Girls accidentaly killed Kim jong un's brother thinking it was a youtube prank" pretty hard to miss jajsja
Russians again, really. Come on! Who cares...
@@joniquell5187 I do!
The last thing I heard about it was that it was female assassins. My imagination of the incident was much cooler than the reality. No tight leather outfits, motorcycles or ninja flips. Bummer.

So glad you covered this incident. I always wondered how the girls got involved and could not make any sense out of it. Till now. Thank you.
I'm going to let my 11yro and 8yro daughters watch this video,I need them to learn that no matter how much in need they are they should be careful with any jobs or people that seem trustworthy but they aren't.
What a WILD story. Phenomenal storytelling once again from Mr B. Awesome episode.
I knew what this story was about the second you mentioned this girl’s background and being approached by a producer. Knowing a thing or two about clandestine operations, I’m sure you can appreciate how genius this operation was.
I agree. It *was* brilliant.
Can you imagine how those two women feel now? I’m so sorry for them. And for Kim's brother who passed. 😢
SO sad! And of course, nobody was going to believe them.
The "producers" im certain were trained to spot the most gullible and most willing to go the distance for fame and 💴.
Kim's brother didn't seem to be much of a threat but even if you could be it's a huge deal over there in the "other Korea"
I'm equally in awe and horrified by how genius and effective that hit was.
@@peachespavalko1980he was his half brother. But it still is sad. Even true siblings eliminate each other for power and money. Sad world indeed.
I love how mr ballen can turn a story into almost a feature length film lol. Its amazing

i knew what story this was right away because ive heard it so many times but i just cant get enough of the way you tell stories! and keep the suspense for so long! this was one of the most masterfully planned and scariest things i have ever heard of.. i know it was a government behind it but it just blows me away they had the ideas they had and how flawlessly it happened
This is the highlight of the week for me: a new episode from Mr Ballen. Excellent narration as always, and a very interesting story as well.
Don’t know if you read this Mr Ballen, but my life right now is at its lowest point ever. When it’s all over there may be a story that’s hard to believe but 100% true. I made one huge mistake it would turn out, even though I could impossibly know what dire consequences one decision would cause. The ONLY thing that keeps me going is hearing your stories. They prove that bad things happen to good people, and I find some comfort in that.

I can't imagine that many people don't know this story as it was all over the news for weeks, it's just interesting because you have reframed it from Siti's point of view. I feel really sorry for her knowing that she basically was duped into murdering someone.
Apparently I was under a rock that day. Everyone else on here keeps saying they had heard it before too. I've never heard it until today. I heard about his brother just not this crazy side of it. I never knew it was Women who did it. 🤷
