    Small correction,
Gesso is not necessarily for smoothing the painting surface, although many people use it for that.
    It's main function is to
    A. Protect the canvas from the oil paint, because oils will eventually make the canvas brittle and fragile.
    B. Stop the paint from seeping into the fibers and wasting expensive paint and time.
    C. If painting on a wooden board it can help protect your paint from the acids that naturally occur in wood.

When applying gesso to paper and to avoid the paper buckling, paint both sides of the paper with the gesso. I use wax paper in between the paper as it is drying so it won’t stick together as it is drying.

This is such a great idea. I have a few that I can do this to. A little fyi: if you use a higher quality gesso you can do less coats because the artist gesso contains way more pigment. I use Jerry's brand that comes in a big tub and it's super pigmented. Two coats is all you'll need. There's no shame in using Basics gesso when you are priming but to cover underlying images you really need a high pigment gesso.
Try Matte Medium over the ink and then gesso, zero bleeding.

So many of my friends will give me planners they did not use. I am like why?? They just say you know you will use it. I will be ready this one!! Thanks in advance!!

Tip from my own gesso-ing: You don't necessarily need a different brush for smoothing out the brush lines. Just run the brush across the painted surface at a perpendicular direction when the gesso is tacky dry. This works for regular acrylic paintings too.

I opened youtube and YAY, new sea lemon video!!! My mum has an a5 page a day planner from 40 years ago that she has been using over the decades as a recipe book. I love it. I recently started doing the same with a mostly unused planner of mine from 2019. Another idea is to turn it into an art journal or master board. Stick pretty pictures in it every time you find them and eventually you'll have pages and pages of beautiful collage. Treasure Books here on TH-cam did one of those with an old magazine but it will work with a planner too. Thanks for the video

Lines and text and what have you bleeding through in mixed media/junk and art journaling is A BONUS!

Very cool. I have become obsessed with using clear textured gesso in my art journal for almost the opposite reason. Rather than making things smooth it gives things a tooth ( i think that would be the best way of describing it). So, for example, i can use it over washi tape, which usually has a slick surface, and then can use paint markers over the tape. Same with cheap stickers. Gesso seems to be wonderful for giving you the ideal surface.

Yes! I should have mentioned it’s not completely smooth and has some tooth for whatever medium goes on top of it…

This is something I did with one old recipe book. It was tiny and had no images. Whenever I painted any surface and there's always excess of gesso on brush. So before washing the brush I just scrape off extra paint on that book. So, it had like 50 + pages and I mostly gessoed them. I am yet to turn that book into something more interesting.
These ideas will definitely help. ❤️

This is such a great idea! Thanks for showing all your trial & errors. Very inspiring to me. I have a lot of planners with empty pages and I've been wondering what to do with them. The binding and paper quality is too good to throw away, plus, I want to save the pages that I did fill out so I can look back on them. This is a really creative answer to this problem.

Hi, great idea. I have used gesso on paper too, but as you found out it doesn't cover that well. So I would use one coat gesso to seal the paper and then use regular paint to cover the see through issue. I suppose it all depends on what you want the outcome to be, which you use. I do like your tip of using up old paint by mixing it with gesso and using it for a base coat. I could color an entire planner with all the extra paint I have. Someday. :)

If you can put a clip board behind the sheet you're gessoing and use masking tape all around the three loose edges to stretch it flat to the clipboard (like when watercoloring) that can help keep the sheets flat as they dry as well.

To protect other pages I make a page protector out of wax paper with a slit in the middle that the two pages I'm painting go through. I leave an inch or two all round the outside so that I can paint freely without risking it dripping over onto other pages.

Yay! So great to see your notification! If you don't follow Shannon Green already, check out her channel. She has a lot of ways to use those old pages, as well as doing a lot of mixed media techniques. I think that's how I learned about gesso--magic stuff! 🙂

I took a mixed media class a few years ago, and the workshop leader gave us a tip about gesso and brushes. She said to make sure you keep the brush(es) you use for gesso only and don't reuse them with your good paints.

Another solution that wouldn't require any gesso preparation first is zentangle. The organic and freeform style of zentangle can lend itself well to practically any preexisting page spread.

Thank you for this, I have a 365 A Day Creative book gifted to me, it suggested to use Gesso on the thin pages when it called for paint or other materials. I've been procrastinating on using anything but pencil in it as I've never used Gesso, now I feel a little more confident at giving it a go. ☺

Did you try mixing it with white acrylic paint? This is a great idea making them a new "canvas" for art experimentation. I use my old pages for shopping lists or brainstorming an upcoming project... But I might give this a try. I remember Bob Ross always mentioning gesso 🙂 thank you for the idea and showing us all of the different ways it works.

Gesso takes about 24 hours to dry, so I would recommend waiting a day between layers and I’ve found I only need two layers.

Using this on all those irritating pointless reference pages at the beginning of the planner. I managed to rip out a grand total of four pages (2 sheets) without removing stuff I want... But there's still like 10 sheets of pages that give me money conversions or holidays... Like... Idc. That's what I have the internet for.
