Thank you for sharing. Stopped knitting for 20 years and decided to knit again. You're video is really inspiring and learning something new each day when I watch your tutorials every night.
This is the third video I watched on catching floats. You explain things so well. I will come here first with any knitting help I need from now one! Thank you so very much.
You are just absolutely the best! Excellent instructions, to the point and always explain the why, which helps the lesson stick. Everything you do is a worthwhile resource, THANKS.
Thank you for the lightbulb moment! I have been struggling with Fair Isle tension, but I did not know that the dominant color had to be on the left hand. This made so much sense, that I am now going to retrieve my project from the recesses of my UFO pile and try again. Thank you for the key!
Thank you for the encouragement! I have committed to making a “lice” sweater for my husband, based on the success of a hat I made myself before the pandemic hit. But I’d done no colorwork since then, and now I’m having very uneven stitches on small projects. I’m thankful for your ability to share your expertise.
Great tutorial. I have viewed this at least 5 times to make sure my first stranded knitting project is done correctly. The repeats that Suzanne does is crucial to getting the pattern and floats correct.
Thank you NOW I finally see how to trap the yarn in my left hand. What was I thinking I should have started w/your video! Your teaching skills never fail me! Thank you! I also enjoy trapping the yarn in my right hand! I actually struggled with trapping the left hand yarn but now I see it and can feel it while I do it! Thank you! I’m just learning colorwork :)

This looks very useful. Going to try it tomorrow in my first ever stranded colour work project 😀. Oh, and thank you for explaining the colour dominance. I understand it now!

I' had a problem with the backside stitches, holding the yarn in the right hand...😯😯😯 but I think now I've got it! Knitting with Suzanne Bryan Hello dear Suzanne😀 Oh yes I will do what I can to let much people know your helpful clearly works, you are such a nice wonderful wool fairy☺💟!!! All the best and happy knitting, just in heaven one time☺☺ !!! Heartly GittaLloreley from Germany.
So many times I’m put off by nice pattern only because could not realise how to keep nice tension for yarn in the inside and avoid big loops, I always keep my yarn in left so probably will keep both colours in left hand, thou will have a go, will see how it goes. Very nice explanation.
So glad I can help. I also have a video on the methods of holding yarns, both in left, both in right and one in each - th-cam.com/video/NSzvGSlMU94/w-d-xo.html. Thank you and happy knitting.
oh thank you for that answer. It responds to my question of the choosing of the left hand for dominant color (because you are left handed, because you are continental or because it's the way it has to be done :) )

Hi Suzanne, I’m a knitter in the netherlands and I love your video’s. Wenn I search for technical things you have the best and very clear video’s and explanations. I have a question and I hope you can help me. I is about stranded knitting. I can knit colourwork, that is no problem, but I always struggle with stranded knitting in the loop. Do you have any tips for knitting in color in the loop when knitting the transition from one needle to another? I hope you can help me
Suzanne, I am a thrower who uses the right hand only. How would I be able to change the dominant color, if I'm knitting these socks as illustrated I your video...in other words if one color was dominant in one sock and the other color was dominant in the second sock. Hope I've stated my question clearly. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos!
Great questions Nancy. Whichever color you want to be dominant - make sure you hold that color to the left of the non-dominant color. So if you are holding both yarns in your right hand, make sure the dominant color is to the left of the non-dominant color. Happy knitting.
Thank you Chung Jacqueline! Happy knitting. Be sure to check out my new channel for live-streaming - Suzanne - Off the Cuff th-cam.com/channels/QBgFUvQzjz1RUm9NsgEA1A.html
Ms. Suzanne, I have a yarns MC1, MC2, Accent Color 1 and AC2 so my question is can I catch 2 dominants colors at the same time or 2 background colors catching floats in the same round those 2 together as well? For example: MC1 can catch float MC2 or viceversa and AC1 can catch float AC2 or viceversa ?
your explanations on this are on point. My only critic is that there is no dominant color in knitting internationally. What I'm seeing here is more of a tension issue "difference" not a dominant color.
Hi Chris, do you have a video showing both the right side and the wrong side of what you consider to be good stranded knitting? I always love to learn new things.
Thank you for explaining this which I think that I have got , but do you have a demonstration of doing this on the wrong side when you are knitting in the purl stitch
@@SuzanneBryan Hi Suzanne, is this sock pattern available on Ravelry? It's gorgeous and I finally understand why the yarn knitted first is so important. :-)
Does it matter which hand is your dominant for knitting? I'm a flicker, so my dominant hand is the right. Are you a picker or a thrower? Thanks so much! Your video is great.
Really good information and demonstration. I have a question regarding dominant colours. When you have 3 or 4 different patterns in a fairisle yoke sweater and using 3 or 4 different colours, I am assuming you decide which one you want as the dominant for each pattern? As you can tell I am less experienced doing colour change work and would appreciate your input. thank you.
Great question. Using these socks as an example, I would consider the star patterns to be in the foreground and the base behind them to be in the background. I like my foreground pattern to be dominant. Does that help? In this case, if I were changing color selections throughout the design, whichever color I want the starts to be, I would hold to the left.
The yarn that is held in the left hand falls just slightly below the right yarn because it is to the left. This causes the stitches to be just a tad bit taller in the left yarn, and makes them stand out more. Try it. Work some rows with the yarns in one position and then change and work them in the other hands and see how it looks.
is there a way of catching floats in the opposite side? Like, I need the purled side to be the front, so the other yarn needs to be on the knitted side.
Thank you for sharing this tip! I used it on my first project (mittens). Do you by any chance have a video showing how to fair isle knit with 3 yarns? How do I manage the yarns in each hand? ...and if the front of the mitten has three colors and the back has 2 how do I manage the floats?
I have not done any videos with three yarns yet. But I would hold two in one hand and one in the other. Great video idea. I am adding it to my list. Happy knitting.
This is the clearest explanation I've seen of this process. I kinda wished she would've repeated it, uninterrupted, a few times through before stopping to explain. Easier to learn that way.
I have shared this video with Arne and Carlos ...they think that there is no dominant color, they laugh about it....I am very curious if they will respond to your video because it clearly shows that they are wrong about this....I follow both you and Arne and Carlos with great admiration by the way :-) Have a nice day!
Arne and Carlos are teaching the traditional Norwegian knitting. In the Norwegian knit there are no dominant color. Arne and Carlos are well aware that knitting in other traditions can have dominant color. And because of that they wanted to explain the importance of keeping equal yarntension if you want the traditional Norwegian look in your knitting.
I seem to have a problem where the floats show on the public side. I see a vertical spot spot of yarn where I made the float. Is this a tension problem? I know not to carry the float at the same spot on following rows? Any advice on dealing with this problem?
Sometimes when you catch the float, it will show, this happens often if the float tension is a little too loose. Try this - when you first catch the float, everything is fine, no change, but when you make the very next stitch snug up the float just a little bit. Just enough to pull it a little tighter where it is caught. Let me know if this helps.
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan Thanks your for suggestion Suzanne. I will try it when I get going again on the project. I frogged everything so must start over. In the meanwhile, I started a more simple project and will finish it before I try the mitten project again. My mitten project had cute little scottie dogs on it, so I would like it to turn out nicely.
Also, I find that if I am catching the dark, it shows less if I catch it over a dark st in the row below. and vice versa. So if it does peek through, it blends with the stitch just below. I hope this makes sense.
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan I’m not sure understand how to do that. The patternI that was doing had long color runs that are the same for a number of rounds. Also there are rounds that have 14 stitches of light color followed by 1 stitch of dark color, then repeat across row. Carrying the dark strand across the white resulted in public side show through.
but haven’t you also changed which color is the background color and which color makes the design? The snowflakes in the left-hand suck are blue, and the snowflakes in the right-hand suck are white, the background color in the left sock is white, The background color in the right hand sock is blue… I thought the color dominance only determined which color was more prominent when you looked at the fabric?
The color that will be dominant is the one that is held to the left. It does not matter which one is the motif. If you hold the background color to the left, the motif will appear ever so slightly smaller than it would if the foreground color is held to the left. Hope this helps to understand color dominance. Color dominance would be a good video just by itself. Happy knitting.

You hold the dominant color in your left hand, why? Is it because when you knit normally you tension your yarn with your left hand?
The yarn that is held in the left hand falls just slightly below the right yarn because it is to the left. This causes the stitches to be just a tad bit taller in the left yarn, and makes them stand out more. Try it. Work some rows with the yarns in one position and then change and work them in the other hands and see how it looks.
I’m normally a thrower so would I put the main (dominant) yarn on my right hand?
Thank you, I finally get this!
Great!

Send me a video of you knitting.
excellent
Many many thanks, Larry!
but haven’t you also changed which color is the background color and which color makes the design? The snowflakes in the left-hand suck are blue, and the snowflakes in the right-hand suck are white, the background color in the left sock is white, The background color in the right hand sock is blue… I thought the color dominance only determined which color was more prominent when you looked at the fabric?
The color that will be dominant is the one that is held to the left. It does not matter which one is the motif. If you hold the background color to the left, the motif will appear ever so slightly smaller than it would if the foreground color is held to the left. Hope this helps to understand color dominance. Color dominance would be a good video just by itself. Happy knitting.
