That's incorrect his and mine where straight out the package 1st fill up butane goes everywhere I actually had to play with it until I hit a sweetspot where I saw the gas go in slowly drop by drop that's the best I was able to get it and I'm no novice. Today it's time for partial fillup 2 let's see how that goes.
If you light a cigar with a Zippo don't put the flame on the cigar, hover the cigar about half an inch above the Zippo flame and you won't get any of the fuel taste. Same goes with cigarettes, joints, blunts whatever you are smoking;)
I have used both. The Thunderbird gave me about 6 months service before it failed to light, even though full. The Z-pipe lighter has been in constant use for years, and has yet to fail me. The Z-pipe version is a soft flame, but comes out from the side instead of the top. This is designed to light a pipe as opposed to a cigar. But I've lit many, many cigars with the soft lighter. Got rid of my Zippo liquid fuels long ago and never looked back. BTW, the Z-Pipe version is clear so you can see all the 'fluid' inside. I strongly recommend the Z-Pipe (not Z-Plus) version.
Thanks for the great video. Can I suggest that you look carefully at the design of your VS Plus jet flame insert. The chimney seems to emulate that of the Ronson flip top lighter which has a slightly bigger case. This would explain why your insert had difficulties when you tried to force it into the smaller sized Zippo case. They make another version which has a chimney in the style of a Zippo, although the holes are fake and are simply markings in the casting. There's a good chance that this type would fit into a Zippo case beautifully.... I'm going to get myself the Thunderbird soft flame insert for two reasons.... One- I bet it uses less gas than the jet flame, therefore lasts longer on one refill . Two- It looks more like the original Zippo with this flint system of ignition. Let's face it, most smokers have been let down by electronic ignition lighters at some stage, they aren't reliable or long lasting and they can't be repaired.
i have the zplus soft flame flint striker zippo insert,, it fits and looks just like a regular zippo insert ,, no problem filling it ,, or otherwise ( so far ) and you can tell it needs refilled as the flame starts to burn lower but will still ignite for a day or two after that ,, the only problem is i am going to have to get another one for my backup lighter as well now
The Thunderbird line is made by Vector, one of the best butane lighter manufactures. They also have jet models with one or two jets, probably a better bet for a jet type. The soft flame Thunderbird looks great, I expect I'll get one soon, I already have a Vector jet on my Desk.
If you're concerned about the taste imparted by your flame, a wooden match is going to give the best result. Butane will give a hotter flame, more stable outdoors (where most people smoke these days), and more direct, but it also has an off-flavor if held too close. A zippo with ordinary fuel is fine for cigarettes (which start fast and don't need to roast), but they don't work well for pipes because you end up having to pull unburnt fuel vapor into the bowl as you start your coal. Zippos can work for cigars, but you must not apply the flame to the cigar --- holding the cigar tip slightly above the visible flame is the only way to avoid fumes, and it's not workable outside. As odd as it may be, a wooden match is actually the best way to light anything you plan to smoke for flavor... it's going to be the hottest, gentlest and most controllable flame and will only offer the most modest cellulose soot, which is essentially flavorless. You can only get the same level of flavorlessness and heat out of beeswax punk (a very thin (lollypop stick?) beeswax candle), but that's bulky and awkward to carry. (Nobody carts a tinderbox around, for good reason.) Matches. Smoke with wooden matches. We need to support match-makers, anyway. My. $.02. Worth nothing, really. Do what you want. Even though I have a zippo in my pocket every day I'll also always carry a box of wooden matches for anything tasty or flavorful that I want to smoke.
Always light a cigar with a stick match or candle, IMO. How long does the insert last per-fill ... ? File down the plastic so it fits gooder... lol & I'm not a big fan of using plastic for the environment.
It seems like any torch butane insert I encounter has problems with air in the line. I recently bought a zippo brand single torch insert, and no matter how many times I purged it and refilled it, it consistently would go back to sputtering out like the Z plus does in this video. I'm thinking about getting a thunderbird soft flame :^), I hope I'm not disappointed.
That was always one of the problems with butane lighters the backspray when you refill them you always lost a certain amount of the gas by the combination of the size or the refill valve and size of filling tube on the butane can
I just wish the metal/coating (whatever they used) on the t-bird looked real. It looks like cheap chrome rims. I would definitely buy one if they improved the metal. Let's be honest nobody watching this NEEDS a zippo we're all here because zippos are aesthetically pleasing. A bic or any other lighter with a flint wheel and butane will work fine.
I had issues with filling my zplus tooo that's why I'm here now. It's leaks all over my hands and everywhere. I recently had this new butane which had plastic adapters built into the top you could pop out first time I saw something like that. But In wondering if indeed the zplus may need one of those adapters? Idk I prefer torch bit with the same issues u had I'm gonna get that thunderbird I didn't even know that existed and I was indeed wondering how the it lights so thanks for showing us inquisitors lol. My question is simple, which has the longest burn time and or is best for lighting a campfire? I don't smoke you see but i keep a zippo fueled and with me for emergencies. But the evaporation is annoying and only serves to make it iffy at best for this purpose, but i love the zippo case and want to keep it.
The Commenter torch style is the way to go. I go camping too and things get windy. That being said your kindling has to be on point if you wanna save butane.

Dude my Z-plus is hit 'n' miss on the refill spray. I feel lucky that I've not blown out the O-ring because of how I hammer down a full 5 seconds sometimes when it stops over spraying on my hand. I fact my only complaint other than that is that there's not a fuel gauge window. Oh, and also my Z-plus demands to be no less than 1/2 flame adjustment, for even a 1/2 millimeter to the less and it's dead. That said I swear by my "Z-plus!" because it seems to go for 2 1/2 - 3 weeks on my 1 1/2 pack of ciggies a day. The only time my Z-plus went dead I brought it back to life by intermittently vacuuming it and spraying both the flame nozzle and butane fill port with keyboard duster.
Did you vent out the residual gas before refilling? I used to have a hit or miss chance when refilling my thunder bird inserts until i started pressing down the fill nozzle on the insert until all the gas has vented out, then refilling.
No I haven't. I was afraid I'd create a vapor lock or ruin the intake. I'll keep that in mind. Meanwhile I tried what you said on a old Zippo butane candle lighter and it didn't work-- it vented and there's still an electronic spark but it's dead :-( And the keyboard duster didn't help either.

Highly compressed gas can turn into liquid in many situations. You can see it by clear disposable butain lighters have liquid form gas inside, or hearing liquid noise when you give shakes to butain gas canisters.
You couldn't fill the torch insert because it was full & the flame adjustment was turned down too low to light. The soft flame filled easily because you had the cam open the entire video & leaked fuel the whole time so the insert was always empty. It's absurd because you even mentioned your mistake halfway through your video but for some bizarre reason continued to keep the cam open & waste fuel the entire time.
