How to Dry Hydrangea Blooms

- Now's the time to dry your beautiful hydrangea blooms so you can enjoy them indoors all winter long. Or you might get creative, and use them on a wreath or in another DIY project! There's a few tips that will help you be successful at this, so watch closely!

I love this video because you show step by step how to cut the bloom from the plant which was exactly what I was looking for! I hope to plant these soon and have gorgeous blooms for the fall. Thank you for your video close ups that are so clear and easy to follow.

I accidentally did this last year, I loved them all winter. It was great having dried flowers.

I live in Sydney,Australia.
I planted Panicle and Aborescens Hydrangeas for the first time last spring (October).
It is Summer now.
They are doing well,I cut some blooms to dry but found the more green dried better than the white blooms.
I’am obsessed with these Hydrangeas,they aren’t popular here and are hard to find.
I watched a vid on your hostas a couole of years ago. Now you come up for drying hydrangers. Love your garden. My grandfather had a massive but similar garden and he would win awards. Must be the garden style both you do that is congruent with nature and the human experience (sorry, couldnt find other words. I need to read more romance books 🤣😂)

Ah🤦♀️ should have watched this before attempting to dry mine. I couldn’t figure out why some dried so perfectly & some wilted due to the fact they weren’t completely bloomed out. Thanx for this video 👍

Hi, do you have any tips to prevent big spiders coming with the plant?
I dried some a few weeks ago and since then I’ve been finding the biggest spiders around the living room. I’m pretty sure they came from the flowers. So I’m now scared of doing more 😢
Drying hydrangeas does not invite spiders. Perhaps try again, outdoors under cover if possible, and throughly inspect the blooms before bringing inside.
Somehow I accidentally dried some I cut from my plants and I was so surprised because usually they wilt.
I realize this an older video but did you do an updated video on these?
No we have not, but this is a very effective and easy way to dry hydrangea blooms!
Are the stems touching the water Laura or just providing humidity to the stems ?
Be sure to have the stems submersed in the water, only have an inch or so of water in there, and then just leave this alone until the water completely dries up. It truly does work!

Hello. I have tried with 2 hydrangea 'heads' to dry them this way, and they just end up all wilted and dead. Do you have any idea why it went wrong?
Be sure to put an inch or a little more of water in the vase, then put them on a table out of sight. In a week or two, the water will have dried up and the hydrangea stems should be strong with beautiful blooms ready for decor!
Once they are completely dried out and all water is evaporated, can we put them in a vase and add water in it or no water ?
Yes, place them in a vase without water, and they will stay that way for years!

Hey, I tried this method a week ago, its going well for 2 days, but after that, my hydrangea starting to wither, and now its become smaller and smaller, 🥲

Did you have any water in the container after two days? If not, then there was not enough water to start with, 1--2" of water in a taller vase will last 1-2 weeks before drying up. Hopefully, you can try again. If that is not the problem it might be the type of hydrangeas you have.

It's easy, full sun and lots of water are the two most important steps in this process!
how come mine wilts after a day?
You want to wait until fall to try to dry hydrangeas, then there will be less moisture in the plant stems. This way of drying definitely works, so do give it a try in fall.
I have been unsuccessful, mine turn brown...they are blue. I will follow these steps and see if it works.

I thought we couldn’t cut the ones that bloom on old wood? Newbie here.
You can cut the blooms now to enjoy indoors but you do not want to hard prune the branches of these plants that bloom on old wood since that would be cutting off all the buds that will soon be blooms.
