What an honor and privilege it was to wear that yellow coat and to have been associated with Bobby, Dennis, Larry Kirschner...the entire Bridgemen staff was simply amazing. My last 2 years in Drum Corps were a gift and that smile...that's very real but it came naturally just being around his energy!

Absolutely loved the Bridgemen. Saw them at Drums on the Ohio many decades ago. You could count on them bringing attitude. Loved it

Lowndes High School, Valdosta GA band is called the Georgia Bridgemen. Back in the 80s when my kids went there their uniforms were replicas of the Bayonne Bridgemen except the coats were white. At one band competition there had been light rain and I overheard a parent from another band comment, as the Georgia Bridgmen were coming onto the field, "Ok look they are still wearing their raincoats. Georgia Bridgemen currently has a membership around 400 musicians.

I grew up in drum corp. One of my first corps I saw were the Bridgemen. Thus they became the "banana people." When I got my first ever email address to this day is bananagal1. Forever a bananagal.

Heh, heh, heh, as I remember it, it was the VFW State Championships down in Wildwood & there were these big stuffed bananas you could win as prizes at the water pistol booths on the boardwalk.
The yr before, the big prizes were these stuffed vultures. Sure glad you didn't get inspired by those!

Many of the Metropolitan drum and bugle Corp, disbanded after the 1962 competition season. Included Saint Albans Queens men, Loretto Knights, from Brooklyn New York, Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York, and the Selden Cadets from Selden Long Island. I believe the Bridgman purchase Selden Cadets uniform, they were Cadet Style, and used by the Bridgeman for several seasons. Today is March 14th 2022.

Lets be honest here. As much as I enjoyed the bridgemen, the very moment they decided on those stupid coats was the moment they sealed their fate. It was too over the top at that time, they werent going to ever win, and they didnt. You can push the envelope only so much. They went overboard. I played Muchachos with Kirchner and Delucia, so they were some of the best. But The bananas were just that. A bunch of bananas that slipped away their chance of winning with the decision to look like shit on the field with the ugly ass uniforms and over the top production

I disagree with you 100%. The Bridgeman will one of the most famous and liked Drum Corps at the time. Former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968. 2 days post is March 14th 2022

I agree with you American Spirit. Started following drum corps in 1978. Fell in love with Bridgemen as well as Phantom, Crossmen, and 27th. In my early years of teaching drumline, I modeled my lines after Bridgemen. Met Dennis Delucia once at an indoor show at Morehead St. in 1984 and had a few calls with him at his drum shop. Good guy. Anyway, to anyone who marched or instructed in Bayonne, thank you from the bottom of my heart for entertaining crowds at such a high level. Always will LOVE the Bridgemen.

Horseshit. The Bridgemen are one of the most iconic corps in DCI history. They may never have won the DCI championship, but the corps will never be forgotten. They literally changed the direction of drum and bugle corps from a strict military style to Broadway production style.

Let's be honest here, the coats and the hats are what made the Bridgemen iconic. I would bet the MAJORITY of people in or associated with DCI, WGI, UB, etc., would disagree with your statements. Maybe it was the judges who had their head up some other director's butt. Our high school band director made it possible for us to go to DCI championships in 1978. We copied the drill and Land of Make Believe, incorporated the Bottle Dance at the end, and people were coming from everywhere to see us, and not the for the football games. We walked away at competions with Superior ratings, and Class trophies. There was SO MUCH JEALOUSY of the director from other teachers at the school, that they started spreading horrible rumors about her, and she ended up moving away. We were taught not only music, but responsibility and discipline by her, and I will never forget it. We loved the yellow bananas, and I wore my Bridgemen tshirt until it was threadbare.

I marched with BOTH Muchachos and Bridgemen in the 70s. Each corps was iconic, including the uniforms! I was incredibly proud to wear both the kick-pleats, AND the coats! Mr. Tellitlikeyou’rebitter is wrong and still living in the 1970s. 🙄
