    Totally agree, Wear OS is definitely underrated. No other OS got the amount of apps (& most importantly apps providing watch complications / widgets). And - as you talked about - the optional low-power ambient mode is a very important feature. Its up to watch face devs to design the look of the ambient mode, but that too I think is positive.

    WearOS is a good platform and, when it works, it's fantastic! But, that's the problem - so often it just doesn't work. Since they pushed Android 8 onto the watches with its severe limitation on background processes the performance has plummeted. Google assistant for me is useless: it's slow to respond and often the screen times out before it's started listening or responded. You only have to look on Reddit to see a community that so want it to work but are frustrated by how poor it is now and how little Google appear to care about the platform.

    • @JSyntax
      @JSyntax  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes it's horrendous. The potential is there if the meet a baseline performance of just working 99% of the time. Its funny how android updates damaged wear os. Do these team not meet at Google? Jesus.

      @@JSyntax I love my Huawei Smartwatch 2, but its performance is really pathetic, the most horrendous is battery life, though. Possibly the poor performance of WearOS lead the biggest manufacturer, Samsung to pick Tizen vs WearOS. I used to have a Samsung smartwatch, and it performed a hell lot better than my Huawei Smartwatch. I have an Apple Watch 4, too, so I love smart watches.

  • @quadcopter9993
    @quadcopter9993 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Brilliant appraisal of the situation and I agree with you.
    I'm looking for a smartwatch that will give me:-
    1 - Android functionality (G-Pay, G-maps and G-Assistant, selective notifications and responses).
    2 - Bluetooth and optional Wifi connectivity
    3 - LTE connectivity (hardware/software sim)
    4 - Minimum use of 4 days on a single charge with always on display (albeit a low power option with wake up).
    5 - IP68 waterproof.
    6 - It needs to look like a watch that I can wear at a wedding or on the beach.
    7 - Multi-lap stop watch feature (for motor-sports).
    Wear OS is probably the most likely to deliver this watch because it specialises on the different User Interface (UI) requirements of watches over phones (Android is principally focused on UIs for phones and tablets). The Android watches are lacking because not all apps work on the watch UI and the watches are often used as a slaves to phones (Bluetooth phone connectivity which doesn't work on Android 7). Wear OS is a common platform for manufacturers to build on, giving consumers the greatest variety of options and the largest market for 3rd party apps. It's unfortunate but the Samsung Tizen OS is a total non starter, mainly because of Bixby but also because not enough manufacturers use it so there are not enough Tizen apps and even then for those that do exist, will they link across platforms to provide data unity with google data? The unmentioned Apple OS is just for architects and people who like to pay for stuff blindly without considering its real value so that's a product for a parallel universe.
    The watch I'm prepared to pay for clearly doesn't exist yet so I'll have to stick with my Android phone and unconnected Edifice watch. Could it be that for the moment anyway, consumers are actually waiting for the techies to catch up!

    I totally agree with you that the Wear OS is underrated. I had no issues so far with my watch and follow some of the guidelines to keep my battery lasting longer. I hope that Google will continue to improve the OS and look forward to seeing a PIXEL WATCH.

    I just invested in Wear OS I a big way by getting the Summit 2. Most people (I admit to having some buyer remorse) say that is a crazy waste of money. Hands down, it’s the most premium looking smartwatch, and I really like that about it. The negatives: I simply cannot trust it for fitness hand and I am back to using my old Vivoactive 3 for that. For example, I went on a mile walk with the Summit 2 last night. The HR was so inaccurate that that it threw off my fitness results for the week. So, back to the VA3 for future exercise. I’ll try disabling WiFi as you suggested. Even with all of the so called top of the line specs, I’m barely getting a day on battery life. GPS also does not work unless you are connected to your cell phone.

    Great video mate, I just picked up a Fossil Gen 5 Garrett last week and was almost going to take it back due to the really bad reviews on Wear OS application page. After watching your video I now plan on giving it a go. I do hope Google invest in making what could potentially be a really good alternative to the Apple and Samsung giants. My main running watch is the Polar M600 with WearOS and looking forward to the new Suunto 7. The biggest downside is support for Google Pay here in Europe, which is non existing in my country 😭😭. The other one is related to Offline music in Spotify. Looks like the Spotify devs really lost interest there, which is a shame. Speed/performance also had to do with the outdated Qualcomm chips that were used for the last 3/4 years. Thanksfully new WearOS cpu’s are launched again. You are spot-on about the RAM. Point 1: Always on screen: while it looks fun to have a cleaner version of the watchface, a big shake to wake up the watch is completely fine for me. I get used to it with Pebble Time during nights (it turned on the backlight), and started to watch the time this way during days also :D
    My main problem however: Where can you change the language? Have to reset if you want change eg. from US English? Why it does not allow to change units? I don't speak Fahrenheit, Foot, lb, but Celsius, meter, kilogram, so it was a pain to give my data to an app, and figure out how high the temperature outside...
    Also, as it is Google product, I would like to see extensive setup possibilities in my phone. It would be way easier to set up the watch from a big screen.

    I would not buy a wearOS smartwatch for 2 reasons :
    - I don't trust Google enough to give them such personals informations about me, u can still be prudent with ur smartphone but payment/activity tracking is too much
    - Google assistant sucks even on smartphone so I can't imagine with smartwatch's latency, I remember the vanilla siri on iPhone 4s being better, I don't know if it's because of the French version but it's really poor tbh

      Although this comment is super late, just got to mention that the assistant blows Siri out of the water have done several side-by-side tests with my spouse's phone versus mine.

    Meh, it's Google. It's definitely on the chopping block like all their other software.
