Hey man, loving the videos! As for your thumping technique, I think it's okay but having bought the Thump! DVD here's what you can improve on: 1. Keep your thumb fixed, almost like a thumbs up, and when you strike, it's solely from wrist movement. Strike at an angle too, not from directly above. 2. Keep your fingers closer in a fist, and when you play with your fingers, it's from the motion of the thumb's upstroke giving momentum. Your fingers should be very close to the string or even resting on them, and as you turn your wrist up for the upstroke, your fingers produce the sound. 3. Growing your thumbnail really helps with the attack on thumping, you want it to grow past your flesh ideally.
Thanks for the suggestions! I in no way claim to be good at this technique, in fact I am very aware that I am doing a lot of things incorrectly. My intention with these videos was to teach patterns, so that the people who actually know how to thump can play it correctly :) I need to practice my technique, so thanks for the tips!
Thanks so much for this tutorial. After a lot of time i am kinda getting the thumb technique but now i can't keep up the timing. Damn when the drums come in and change it's mad hard to keep up but i love it.
Great video! Thanks for breaking this down a bit, I've been working on learning to slap for about a year now, but I've been wanting to learn how to properly do some of the thump stuff AAL does, guess I'll get started now :D
Hey man, once again, great videos, I was just wondering if you have any tips on how to identify and figure out thumping sections? Obviously you can hear when their being played but like, how do you go as far as figuring out which fingers are being used and stuff?
Thanks! Let me first say that I'm no expert at this, I've certainly been proven wrong several times haha. But for me it's simply a combination of experience using and playing with the technique, combined with a keen ear for the sounds. For example I've noticed that accented thump sounds typically are coming from the thumb or the final finger of the grouping. And as a rule of thumb (hehe) patterns always follow "top to bottom", i.e. D, U, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. I am positive that you will never see Tosin mix up this order and play something like D, U, 2, 1, 3. Bottom line, keep experimenting! Hope this helps.
chicken6111 Thanks dude! Definitely a pointer in the right direction. I've been trying to get my mind around the thumping part in the intro to Arithmophobia, and I wasn't quite able to visualize how its done, but what you've said will definitely shed some light on it. Thanks again my dude.
I have one question... I've been having troubles to strike the string with my other 3 fingers, they get stuck and it makes the note sound very loud. am I forcing my fingers to reach the string? Maybe I have the strings down far? cause I normally use them very close to the fretboard. I got used to it when I was younger... I would appreciate so much any advice
Do you happen to have figured out the clean guitar progression in the fade out ending as well? I learnt the solo / lead he plays over it and some of the clean chords, but I can't seem to hear the first chord well enough to figure out what he plays
chicken6111 much appreciated! I was trying to learn it in EBEADGBE but I'm not sure if that's the tuning he's in. I know that it's focussed around the 7th fret on the low E string and that fast pull-of lick is focussed around frets 7,9,11 and 12 on the 6th string.
Terrific video, mate! I would really love to see Ectogenesis worked out, as that is my current favorite from the new AaL album. Any chance you'd be up for that challenge @chicken6111 ?
Nice job with the tutorial. Really makes it less intimidating to dive in to
Happy to hear it, thanks man!
Yes
Thanks so much for the positive response! I'm glad this is helpful to some people. Next video will be the bridge section of "Physical Education" :)
chicken6111 yes thanks man
chicken6111 and what about intro riff?

Fuuuuck I’ve been looking for an explanation like this for years. APPRECIATE YOU!
I know that this video was posted a long time ago, but I am here to declare that I'm awed by your ear-transcribing skill. Teach me senpai
Love your vids bruddha, keep rockin. I wouldn't be surprised if your views start rising exponentially. These are super helpful.
Sneaks Mcgee thank you man, means a lot. I'm happy to keep making them if people keep asking!
You're explaining this very clearly and helpfully, even for a guitar donkey like me. Thanks for posting this!
Lol thanks, I try to explain things in as simple terms as possible, I'm glad you were able to connect with it.

Thanks! Good luck with it, glad I could help :)
Awesome dude! PLEASE keep making more of these!! i really want to learn the thump pattern from ectogenesis
Haha that's tough one! I'll look into it. Which part specifically?
The part that starts at 2:45 but honestly any thumping parts would help me out. Im trying to learn how to do it but its freakin hard haha
I really thought the facebook notification @ 0:37 was from my page... Awesome tutorial by the way.
Great Job Man! Awesome tutorial!
tosin is a fucking god, manthis new album holy!, this riff is just amazing
Awesome! Didn't know I could try this on a 6 string. I'll give it a go. Not a very good guitarist but I have fun.
Having fun is what it's all about my man, keep playing! ;)
Really good tutorial !
Fuck yeah! Didn't know where to start finding the way around this technique. You pushed me! Thanks
Very helpful thank you for this!
hell yeah brotha! thank you very much for this!

Subbed. Keep it up!!
0:14 "my thumping technique isn't great"

crisp.

DanielRDB yea I can give that a shot!

The best I can do is transcribe a 6 string version, that's the most amount of strings I have :(
chicken6111 that's fine as well! It would definitely help immensely.

That's a fun one! I have a good idea of what's happening, but it is difficult to figure out without an 8 string :(
Jk, got it :) check out my new Ectogenesis video!
Haha, I saw it the other day, immediately watched, liked, attempted to learn. Thank you so much!
For some reason I try your pattern and I feel I'm missing some notes 🥴🥴
I think it's also bullshit that you get to play this at parties
