hello :)
I did sign up thanks to your suggestion! Hopefully this can help me be less chaotic with my projects and keep me organised.
On a side note so glad I'm not on tiktok or in those kind of art places, seems toxic as heck.
I’m super unorganized with my references and ideas in my gallery so this is really helpful!
I'm interested in Milanote. I see Link I like. You like Zelda I presume.....Awesome😂
signed up as soon as you started talking about it. it seems to be exactly what i was looking for, so i can keep references all in one place. thanks man
Honestly, the community has become so toxic that one day an artist is gonna say "i like using mechanical pencils" and everyone will lose their minds, its sad
lmfaooo i'll keep your words to heart!
😭😭 i liked the art style i thought it was cute and inclusive because of the variety- but i love using mechanical pencils it’s to the point where i can’t use a normal wooden pencil
@maymaycherry9520 Same, my pencils case is filled with mechanical pencils. Any time I try to use wood pencils, it feels off
@@kittycandy_art fr it feel so terrible im just obsessed with mechanicals idk why
@@maymaycherry9520 they took control over us
They get mad at this artstyle for being "overused" but the moment they see a unique artstyle the person gets "art-lored" :(
We artists on the internet just can’t win ✨

Man I'm fucking gen z and chronically online but even I can't keep up with all these new definitions and freaking cancel culture.
@@pliktllmfao exactly :sob: why cant we have nice things for once
The most effective technique against these dumb terms is to not give a shit and wait for the negativity crowd to move onto something else. Don’t let pixels on a screen dictate what you want to draw.
as someone who cannot render ANYTHING in art, i am genuinely envious of people who have the jelly art style because their rendering is HEAVENLY. i cannot render anything no matter how many tutorials i look at and practice with
Same. I'm stuck with the usual cel-shading.
Same, I've been attempting digital art for years and still can't render well no matter how many tutorials and tips I learn QwQ
@@artsy0023 Cel shading isn't usual :( I render too much cause I can't figure out celshading. Celshading is the ones that makes it into anime so have some confidence in yourself
samee, I really like the jelly artstyle cus of how they render it.. And it's just so pretty I don't get what tf they mean cus it looks so heavenly 😭😭??
@@nizzimura.. honestly!!
I'm happy I'm an artist that is so disconnected from the online art community that I can't even begin to comprehend what any of this drama is even about
same, Im just minding my business on tumblr 😧
Me too, luckily my two things are obscure-ish fanart and cars, so I have very little overlap wth the crazy part of the community - also I absolutely detest Twitter.
haha same like ima stick with drawing fanart and guitars and stay far away from TikTok and twitter
@@Punchstop_jo Yeah I'm hiding within the ruins of Tumblr where I'll be safe reading and writing fanfics, AUs and theories on some silly little puppets.
Honestly same.
I’m so out of the art community, that I’m completely unaware of the drama.
This is good thing.
Ahaahhahaha you’re in luck!
please be unaware...
Lmao same. Just the mere fact people get pissed over people using references is enough for me to keep my distance, let alone these kinds of issues. I've seen how bad it can get in the past. Tumblr callout post culture was a cursed thing....
same
sameeeeeeeee, good thing I uninstalled TikTok
Listen, I'll admit that the Jelly artstyle isnt really for me but objectively it is a very unique and eye catching way of rendering art. The artists who do art in this style are EXTREMELY talented and I can only imagine how much time and skill it must take to make these pieces.
People need to learn that not everything is made for them and if you have nothing nice to say then just dont say anything at all!!! >:(
tiktok just wants to hate anything and everything i guess
Amen. I’m not a fan of it either, but I can respect the technical skills and unique way of rendering the art. That alone deserves respect. TikTok’s art community is something else, I tell ya
Man, tiktok is just starting to sound like a 2nd version of Twitter at this point. A dumpsterfire. There's more important things going on and people are mad about a art style. Smh

I agree with this comment
One lesson I learn from this is, Don't do art on Tiktok. There's always a drama one way or another.
Fr they will cancel you for literally anything they can find
Yeah, my friends want me to go to tiktok to share my art more, but honestly, I'm not even going to think about uploading my art there. I'm DEFINETLEY going to get art-lored the minute I do 💀.
fr like you can get popular easily, but you can also get unpopular easily, you can make a character a shade slightly lighter and they'll can you a whitewashing racist
Don't go on TikTok *period* , deleting it was the best decision i ever made
not really. tbh twitter is wayy more toxic than TikTok
As someone in their early 20s, watching people treat and refer to an 18yo as “a literal whole-ass adult” is so funny to me. 18 year olds are really no different from 16 year olds maturity wise. They’re still teens. It’s like watching children fight, idk it’s pretty funny to watch from afar
Edit: not y’all thinking I’m defending them 😭 go argue with yourselves in the comments idgaf
I'm only 19 and I feel the same
It's a highschool senior/college freshman picking a fight with a MIDDLES SCHOOLER. I'm not saying they have to be held accountable like jeff bezzos, but it's still pretty pathetic!
@@aeoligarlic4024 It's pathetic but I'm not gonna hold her to a much higher standard than I would any other teen just because she's a legal adult in the US. You don't magically become mature and rational at that age.
Besides, we all know minors use the fact that they're minors to be generally awful to people online.
I wasn't an adult until I was exactly 22, like I can pinpoint the first day i felt it lmao
fr their brain is still developing
In this age of AI pandemic, art community should be tighter in supporting each other. I hate when stuff like this can possibly put people off from drawing and learning with their own hands.
And possibly even see this AI artpocalypse as just desserts
Yea, and what’s wild, is that several sites dedicated to using AI are now incorporating this art style into some of the generators. I keep tabs on a few sites’ popular daily generations, and I’ve even seen this same style be used in prompts. It will generate art that is very similar, with progress with what it learns in terms of anatomy for the style advancing each and every day.
Artists should be banding together to protect all styles, not gatekeep the community and let their own biases get in the way.
Like, I love traditional tattoo art styles of work and will die on the hill of it being absolutely beautiful, but if someone started targeting every tattoo artist that did the style and specialized in the artwork by claiming their art isn’t appealing or isn’t worthy of any praise … I’d hope like hell that others would quickly shut those people down and realize how childish their crusade is. This needs that same protection.
To see so many people jump in and put down those who do this art style simply because it’s a popular thing to do on a social media site intentionally made to influencer their every thoughts … it’s like come on, be smarter than this lol. It’s really disheartening. It’s no wonder so many seclude themselves and their work away from the general public anymore when they are ready to pounce on others for mere art.
I hate when ai art floods media really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
also there is platforms where you can post your art with better criticism then twitter, don't fall for such an obvious deadly pitfall of despair
@@TwoBs I often wonder how many artists have never shown their work to the world. I wonder if, one day, we come up with a name for them.
@@Amanita._.Verosa._.I'm an artist who has been drawing for 6 years and I NEVER have shown people my art or post it online I could never
Man, this is why I never interacted with the art community on TikTok, ever 💀
Lol same
Agreed
Me too, my cousin quit art because of the hate he got for the jelly art style, he was so good :( but he wasn’t sure how to deal with the hate
tbh not all parts of the art community is all toxic on tiktok. it's pretty chill for the most part if you're using tiktok for learning and not just for drama!
@MohammedAgbadi imma be honest, I don't use tictok 😅, the drama just kinda leaks into instagram, and that's how I find out (both apps are scary)
the art community has always been pretentious weirdos. this is coming from another artist. remember that time tumblr made an artist almost unalive themselves because they bullied her so much because she used a mirror tool? yeah those people are on tiktok now. and targeting asian art styles feels racist.
the "jelly" art style originated in chinese and korean doujins first.
Facts!
Thanks for the info. And very true
thats exactly what i thought when i saw the faces of jelly art. my opinion is that theres a lot of jealousy in the community over seeing another artist become successful but in no way am i defending riri, she seems a bit toxic. like how are you going to post tutorials and then turn around and surprise pikachu face when someone copies your style?? the art community seems toxic as heck.
I’m a chinese person that uses douyin and xiaohongshu, and the art style is def inspired by the makeup trends on the app. I don’t think that people are targeting it because it is an Asian art style or whatever, but because of the lack of diversity. Sure, the jelly art style is pretty to look at, but I think the main gripe ppl have w it is the lack of dynamic poses, facial expressions, and the fact that literally every drawing is a headshot with the exact same specific features: puffy lips, huge eyes, round face, button nose, etc. It’s severely limiting.
I agree except for the racist part. Like, bro. How can people make everything about racism??? I don’t think a single person cares about where this style comes from
fun fact, one of the reasons the eyes look dead is because that's literally what your eyes look like when you start to decompose, they become fogged over and blurry because the layers of the eye are separating and filling with fluid, it honestly looks hauntingly beautiful in my opinion. yeah i looked up how eyeballs decompose for inspiration drawing undead characters.
I think it’s crazy how a 18 year old girl is going to get mad at a 13 year old girl. Not only is Riri mad at an artist who didn’t even copy her artwork, it’s the fact that she literally has TUTORIALS on how to draw like her. I think the fame has gotten to her head honestly. Kind of out of topic butI remember watching a video on the drama and it had a screenshot of her saying “when did kys become a threat?” 💀
EXACTLY like it's crazy that she sent her fans to attack a young artist just for following her tutorials..
Honestly teens shouldn't be allowed on tiktok. But now is too late and their parents + teachers aren't equipped to at least teach them to navigate the madness of social media.
I also want to add that while her handling of the situation could've been handled better, what else would there be to copy since she has some pieces where it's headshots that have same face syndrome?
@@hagane_0 FR like girl…. there’s literally nothing to copy
Exactly
Dude, the other day, I saw someone saying van gogh's art was trash and they hated it. they will quite literally hate on anything.. Art Tiktok is genuinely a dumpster fire except with canvases in it lmaooo💀
What did my boi Van Gogh ever do to them 😭
VVVVAN GOGH?????????

rika is (well was) well-known on an app called everskies as well. she'd show her art and was a designer (she made clothes in-game).
when she was called out for death threats (which is against everskies rules even when you say it out-of-game) she had ignored the situation and saw herself as the victim. she ended up getting banned from there.
i knew her art and name seemed familiar, i thought her stuff was rly cute its a shame she turned out to be an all around asshole
What was her nickname there?
@@toadfairy purio
The jelly whatever artstyle reminds me of a classmate that had pale skin but this constant blush around her eyes and unfocused all the time. Turns out she had major kidney issues and once she got treated her redness disappeared and she gained some life in her eyes.
I think that's why I'm stuck associating this style with something sickly/ill.
That's one way to put it. Imo it looks like something that would came out in the 00s as an online game or those browser games
i feel for kids trying to get into art these days. back when i was starting, the worst thing i had to worry about was the odd troll, or character theft claims.
Best advice for them would be to stay the F out of social media or use it in a moderate way and block weirdos. Simple
agreed. i'd also recommend not chasing trends, since aforementioned weirdos seem to hang around them, but then you risk losing eyes on your work. it's rough.
As someone young in the art community, I don't post much because of this. Trying to make art my career has been a challenge, because on one hand, I've been taught I need a fanbase. On the other hand, all these dramas with people with "beginner" art styles getting tons of hate and then just dropping off the internet because of it, is demotivating. I don't consider myself a beginner, but I just don't wanna get that amount of hate. The internet is really ruining young peoples hopes of being a successful artist, it's getting just sick. And now with this "jelly" art style hate, I think its beautiful?! It's just so unreal that people are at artists throats just because they draw a certain way.
Exactly, i would’ve been bullied to 6ft under if i was born a few years late or started late
I remember when I was younger and I would just draw for myself and not post it. All these kids are just drawing for likes and clout on social media. They're missing out on the happiness of experimenting with art just for yourself
For me i personally think that the style is pretty nice, but one critique is I feel like drawings in the jelly artsyle lack expression and you can't really tell who made the piece of artwork. I feel like people on tiktok don't know how to give proper criticism and they just hate on artstyle or artist. just because.
yhhh i see what you mean. most of the art look really similar and its kinda difficult differentiating the artists from one another but the styles look pretty nice for the most part
EXACTLY!! That's what I dont like abt it too, its the same face syndrome. The rendering is beautiful its just the expressions
YES OMG put 10 dif jelly artists' work next to each other and i literally would not be able to tell they were created by different people
same, it's very aesthetically pleasing but that's all. it's too expressionless for me
true true, the art style is very beautiful, well-drawn and cute but the facial features/expressions/everything are almost the exact same every time. very visually repetitive, to say the least. same eyes, same nose, same face shape, same expression. each piece feels like its the same girl being drawn, just in different colours, accessories and hair. thats just me tho
the fade that riri did from her art to the other person's art to claim kt was "tracing" was sooooo funny because like girl you did not invent those proportions. its kinda just telling on the artstyle for having sameface
The jelly art style is literally the main reason my girlfriend got into drawing, and let me tell you she is actually so good at drawing too. We both are artists, and both have different styles but we both respect and love each other’s styles.
Basically: I feed my ego by seeking attention by imposing myself as distinct from others, and I overvalue my personal preferences by diminishing the preferences of others in order to feel superior."
My brain 👁️👄👁️
Hit the nail RIGHT on the head. Hell, at least that would be honest.
Also: i bandwagon pointless drama because i lack social interaction and i fail to fit in society so the only way i can socialize and feel like i fit in is by joining stupid trend
Yes.Just.YES!!
Easier to be critic than to create.
The art community has always been this toxic. Honestly this drama sounds exactly like the "tumblr red nose art style" drama of the 2010s.
Well that shit was also hideous but all of these are deeply inconsequential.
Man i remember how i used to have a thing for it. It works well if your character is lightskinned and is in a cold temperature. Creates the blushy rosy aura. Then it got overused till it became a meme like 'calarts style'
I think it’s an art style that looks very pretty but is also very limiting. When you showed their social media profile all the artworks I saw looked very similar: cute girls with big eyes, small nose, puffy lips and blank expressions. It’s a prime example of an artist that got too comfortable with certain facial features and poses, leading to sa,e face syndrome. The only things differentiating the paintings were the color palettes and placement of the piercings. Social media praises artists with art styles that are set in stone which I believe stunts a lot of artists’ growth by not allowing experimentation, the most crucial part of art imo
I agree. I found that a lot of jelly art style illustrations don't really have much expression study and sometimes a lot of them are close up/bust up (maybe to show the details on the face)..
However I am open to the way they render, it's impressive
I also think this is the real problem here. Paintings with this art style is all so similar and repetitive, that may lead to less creative and less difference through time and time, then lots of paintings with this art style become no difference.I mean an artist who knows this situation and choose to do this because of like, that's totally fine. But for some new artist from early stage of art level they can be tricked and follow this art style until they become one of them, without exploring and didn't realised they just stepping not moving. And this is the biggest problem unless they are aware of the situation and break the limit by themselves, like change the style or add something unique or start to draw different things like full body and environment etc. This art style is also very easy to learn and process, the basic logic behind it is not difficult at all, which is pretty attractive and easy for artists who just started to make art.
To me it looks kind of uncanny, especially the gigantic lips and super creased/puffy bottom eyelids
honestly, artstyle preferences is SUBJECTIVE. Art styles that you dont like doesnt make it ugly. Art is a free form. People in art community should know that, and should be very appreciative of other various artstyles.
I hate this art style and a lot of other things, but I'd rather "hate in peace" by just discussing thing with my friends and not writing goofy ahh comments ruining other people's day 💀
Exactly, this artstyle isn't exactly my cup of tea, mainly because to me a lot of it looks too stiff and similar to each other (compare it to very expressive artstyles) but I would feel like a sack of crap if I commented on someone's art post saying I didn't like how they draw. I'd rather talk about it to my friends that feel the same way instead of bring someone's hard work down
I hate this art style as well. So ugly. But rather than drama filling up my notifications I would rather have art I actually like so I just click not interested and go next
Yeah like people just can't hate quietly anymore. Block and move on. There doesn't have to be any moral justification for why you don't like something.
Fr I can't stand it, so I just scroll by instead of making hateful comments. If you wanna make fun of something, do it with your friend group in private.
Literally nothing beats taking a screenshot and talking smack with your best friend about anything LMFAO it's like whispering
I dont really get the point of attempting to cancel somebody just cause they followed YOUR own tutorial.. You gotta make it make sense..
Yeah what’s the point of even making tutorials if you don’t want people to use your work as reference?… 💀
there’s a difference between following a tutorial and tracing, copying, etc. someone’s art.
@@jellyfishgenesis yeah, that is true.
@@BianTheWerewolf do you know what DTIYS means ? draw this in YOUR style. not riri’s. nice victim blaming.
@@BianTheWerewolf If their style looks like yours because they heavily referenced then obviously the artist will be mad y’all are just chronically online and fail to understand another’s perspective yes she doesn’t own the artstyle but if riri knows she has a tutorial and still complained clearly she didn’t want people to completely copy her style and that is completely fair people are just making her the complete bad guy for her reaction JUST because the person who was accused is 13 however If that’s the MAIN reason people are mad then y’all aren’t any better because an artist shouldn’t feel like a bad guy for expecting her fans not to completely copy her style
This was a shock for me. I never liked the “jelly art style” and i thought i was the only one. But the people who were mocking Riri’s art for what she did are not like this. I am pretty sure they didn’t hate or even loved the jelly art style before Riri did what she did. Disliking an artstyle is something, but starting to dislike a popular and widely used art style just because of 1 artist is another. An for the poor kid, i hope they never lose their passion of art
Yea I don't like the artstyle either but that's my personal opinion no reason to attack people for drawing in an artstyle.
I'm with you. This art style is NOT my cup of tea/coffee, but to each to their own. At least it's not bean mouths
Yea I personally don't enjoy it either... feels like we're in the minority here lol . But it's weird to like it and then switch on it immediately bc of one person
I still remember that one guy getting death threats for drawing in MS paint
riri literally posts tutorials, she can’t say that someone is copying her, it literally makes no sense
she posts tuts on how to color not how to draw her base + she also said do not heavily reference nor trace her art
@@lovexlina she posted a head tutorial on her now deleted discord..she also posted an eye tutorial. Like you cannot expect not to have ppl heavily referencing your art if you have tutorials on 80 precent of your art.
@@caroiner1972 she didn’t post a head tut yall r just saying stuff to justify attacking her. just because she made an eye tut doesn’t give u the green light to trace nor heavily reference he art.

@@lovexlina funny because no one traced her art. and her tutorials literally have skin rendering and basically everything u need to create a whole drawing stop defending her💀 u can't tell people "don't heavily reference!1!!1!" when ur literally teaching them how to draw the exact same way
my biggest problem with the art style isnt the art style itself, but the effect on beginner artists. ive seen plenty of these beginner artists attempt the jelly art style, a very complex style before even learning the basics and proportions of art. its clear to see in a bunch of them that they havent learned anything about angles/basic proportions and decided to attempt this style without realizing that
But that can be said for other art styles as well. Not just jelly
I don't see the harm of younger artists trying to learn a style before proportions. They should foster the fun of art before they worry about technicalities or the "right" way to draw. Artists shouldn't be discouraged from exploring something they enjoy drawing, beginner or not.
This. Taking a figure drawing class really helped me with anatomy and my confidence in my art.
@@DominiqueDaniagreed, I used to love Gacha life and tried mimicking my art style to be similar to it.
Thing is, majority of the people who learn art is because they wanted to draw anime. Or draw their favorite character. Its something everyone goes through. This stuff fuels the creative juices to actually start learning art 'properly' (through fundamentals).
Its just canon event at this point.
this riri person went after a minor because they DID WHAT SHE TOLD THEM TO DO. no she deserves to be clowned. you cant post tutorials then claim someone is stealing from you. she could have been responsible for someone harming themselves. its happened before. especially when she took her art style from asian artists. she didnt invent it. shes basically picasso. who stole from african art.
u keep spitting facts in this comment section ong ‼‼
“Took the art from Asian artist” you mean having influence. Alt styles like that has always had influence from Asian art and anime art styles. Shut up.
Isnt she asian though?????
Thank goodness im an artist who isnt really too “in” to the community. I love supporting other artists and love seeing different styles and different points in someone’s journey. People on tiktok are genuinely just awful. Like you said, how do you have the time for all this..? Theyre just art styles hahaha.
For the problem with Riri, she admitted on her live that she liked the clout and would do it again for the attention. She laughed in her live when someone commented that the kid almost got doxxed. Also her bio for heavily referenced thing was just added recently. She only JUST added that.
Oop 🫢
The hate is so funny to me because “jelly art” has been around for a really long time. Something that people need to realize is that art isn’t made in a vacuum. Pretty much every single style a person likes will end up in their own eventual style. A lot of people go through phases of copying an art style they like and this is really helpful practice. It’s especially important for artists to train their eye. Imitating a style is very hard to do. The difference now is that young artists have all sorts of outlets that they can post their practice on. This can be helpful when receiving feedback, but also not good because posting and gaining followers off of copied art is not ethically great. This is why it’s important to learn how to use multiple references and to expand your mental library. I agree that they are both at fault.
literally. anyone who has owned porcelain dolls knows that the glossy-eyed, blushed, pouting look has existed for eons at this point
@baydiac that's not the point here though. The point is that everyone consumes the same stuff and consuming a lot of the same stuff will produce a similar art style. This is definitely different than a porcelain doll. But growing up with BJDs and anime and different fashion styles and "pinterest" girl art from 10 years ago will produce the same thing
First time i heard of this drama and thought wtf this looks like any other modern romance shojo maga
I agree with this. As an artist, my art is like a diary to me. It’s all of my personal interests and likes, even my morals and childhood. So I kind of get why Riri did not like what the girl was doing seeing as how she honestly made the art so uncannily similar, you could barely tell that it was made by two different people. The young girl has no clue how to properly use references as inspiration. But I think Riri could’ve handled this better.
This is exactly why I pray every day for the downfall of social media. I don't want it to go away entirely. It's a good tool for business. But the veil of anonymity that being online gives people just brings out the worst in us. I'd LOVE to see someone try to tell me what style I can or can't draw in irl.
idk but its called an "ARTSTYLE"??? why is Riri acting like she owns it💀💀
purika doesn’t know how to handle a huge platform. she tells hate comments to off themselves and then brags about it. she sends hate mobs to people that does things she remotely dislikes. never once apologetic about it and admits she likes the clout of being called out and would do it over and over again.
I agree with people having the right to defend themselves for the right reasons. But man yeah, I dislike it when people take it too far in the opposite direction like what you said.
I was very active on Instagram, and now on Twitter for the art community. So far I choose not to partake in any sort of drama and just peak in from the sidelines from time to time.
But sometimes when I do check it out, I would encounter people with the “But go off ❤️” attitude when responding to haters. And for some reason now these days, I find that to equally be as concerning. Especially when these people can be so aggressive and ‘loud’. It’s downright insufferable to watch.
Apparently she said something along the lines of "I needed to keep my kind image" also on a dress up game they used to frequent on,told someone off themselves on tiktok then posted a screenshot on said game
@@naomi-sh7eu Jesus, this girl might just be the epitome of a high school, no, a Middle-school bully.

Fun fact: I play a pixel dressup game called EverSkies, and Puririka was a user on the website under the name Purio. She joined in 2021, and the alleged incident about her telling someone to “delete” themselves is what got her banned off the site. She was pretty popular here too.

i personally think the jelly art style is adorable, the rendering is very impressive and i wish i could draw like that. people are just miserable and never satisfied.
this is why i stopped posting any of my art and straight up left tiktok and instagram, the art community has gotten so toxic that im sure many other people besides myself feels unsafe to try to show off our art that we think looks cool

All the while either not improving or even creating their own art and / or sucking AI art programs' knob just so they'd call themselves "real artists."

I didn't even know this art style really had a name, and I definitely didn't know people hated it. It's a lovely and compelling style, something I would really describe as "eye candy". It requires a lot of technical skill, too. It looks really fun to draw like that.
I find it hideous as sin but I just don't look at it.

grandma here: it's a cute style! it reminds me of the 70s big eyes style which adorned my nursery walls when i was a little kid. and the air brushed look also reminds me of the 80s hiphop grafitti styles my friends and i were always drawing, too! i love to see art evolve into new sytles and mediums.
To me these are just people who saw an art style they didn’t find the best looking,so they decided to immediately start hating like an ig reals commentator after seeing a happy dog😭
lmfaooo i meann i can see the attraction to the art style ig.
I will say, I think this style is a preference thing. It may not the best for SOME people, but for me I really enjoy looking at it. It's soothing to me, and reminds me of old oil paintings. I also like pretty things and sparkly things, that's just who I am at heart. I don't think it's the BEST ever art style, but I don't think there IS an art style I consider to be "best"; some art styles look good and some don't and that's fine. But to HATE on a style because it's not their cup of tea? I wonder why the hell it even matters. They could literally google "art" and find a BILLION other examples of art WITHOUT that style; why not put any effort into THAT?
Point is, people are bonkers. 😂
@@nomoretwitterhandles agreed
I get Riri not wanting to feel like they’re being copied, and that no one deserves to be dogpiled like they were, but it is really hard to be sympathetic to them since they were trying to cancel and attack and send their fans after a much smaller artist who looked up to them. As for the hate with the jelly art style, it is perfectly acceptable not to like an art style, I can especially understand if it is super common, but do not hate or crap on it, or especially not the artists!!
Edit: yeah, hearing more about riri and how she said she would send her rabid fans after another kid if it gets her more clout, and other things, she is just straight up disgusting. She should not be given any attention on her page
Yeah, I don't get why people are defending Riri in this. There is no way that you can spin what they did into something excusable. You think someone traced your art? Talk to them, before making a video attacking the other person. I cannot stand when people can't recognise and admit that they did something wrong and stupid, insteading of doubling down and trying to look cool by being petty (the "apology" video). This feels like the whole Pinterest-girl interior decorator drama
@@---xe5etexactly! I don't understand how people can defend riri in this at all
yeah fr she literally like displayed it on her discord, literally making her fans attack a young artist who legit just learnt from her tutorials?? the artist did nothing wrong and for people to defend riri for being so horrible is so questionable
yeah riri deserves all the hate she got for causing a witch-hunt on a 13 year old when she herself is 18 and said she felt no remorse. just a trash move
this drama makes me feel like im on another fucking planet. like, this style has been around for ages, this one kid on tiktok doesnt get to "claim" it as their own for fucks sake. i'd see this shit on the front page of deviantart in 2016 all the time. if someone don't want anyone talking inspiration from their art, they shouldn't put it in the public eye. jesus christ.
Aaa i have developed phobia of posting my art to the open internet because of this crazy shit😭
This made me realize why I don't read comments when I post art.
Its always a relief to see your videos and know at least some people have common sense
😭😭😭😭thankyou so much
You’d be surprise how many videos agree with people hating on the art style.
Some even say that it’s racist and ‘whitewashing’.
I personally think this "jelly" artstyle is very generic-looking, and the characters seem to have a terrible case of same-face syndrome, but I can appreciate how much effort must go into the rendering process. I know personally I can't render for shit, and I'm an entire year older than Riri.
I take more issue with people taking easy-to-solve situations way too far over something as insignificant as an art style. that's immature and if you're still acting like that past a certain age, that's on you to do better.
same the same face syndrome is so bad you accuse anyone with the jelly art style of tracing
This jelly art style gives me uncanny valley feelings. Maybe it's just the way Riri puts out this style, but those huge strabusmus eyes just creep me out.
I love your videos so much. It isn't blaming anyone just pointing out the flaws and asking to be better. Thank you for doing the job of being a voice of reason on the internet, seriously sometimes I question everyone.
I hate when influencers especially tiktokers get mad when others ‘copy’ their work when the whole thing is not originate or first created by them. And when their whole page is to show others how to do the same shit. Like literally look at yourself.
Literally if u post ur art online it’s going to inspire ppl. It’s like she has never used a reference or got inspired by other artists work. She’s a grown adult acting like that 💀
@@SPITBLUDS Ikr, that’s also very true and very very valid in social media spaces and when others share their works.

I never thought theres a term in Tiktok for Semi-realistic art style as "jelly art style". Then again I dont use that hellspawn of an app and never dwell in art community for far too long, so I never heard of this drama until now.
If theres something I want to criticize about it is that they look so unsettling to me. Not my cup of tea, but good for you if like it.
I refer it as semi realistic anime
@@rosemary3029I do realism and I also do anime and I've done realistic anime before and that's what I've always called it too. I think this is different because it is categorized by certain color pallette and angles. And the blush and skin tones are similar as well. The drawings are always done in a close-up kind of way
Semi-realisim is pretty broad so I wouldn't call it the same thing as the jelly art style. I've seen many semi-realistic art styles and not all of them are jelly
I love weird niche community drama, especially when I’m not in that community. It reminds me that humans are all weird and messy without exception and when we gather there will be drama. Moreso, I love the sound of your voice and how eloquent you are. Keep up the good work 😊
As an artist myself(17),i like to do something called staying away from trends!
I think pigeon-holing this “art style” is where we went wrong. Sparkly eyes, dead pan facial features, and juicy lips are used in so many other styles. But I do like this style because I think a lot of these portraits are very well rendered and I do like how diverse the characters are too.
Fixing to head home, so I’ll watch the rest later. But I wanna give my initial thoughts here:
I don’t like the jelly art style, but I can absolutely see the appeal of it. I do think the rendering process is very neat. But it’s just not my cup of tea and that’s perfectly fine. I don’t hate it with every fiber of my being, I just don’t think it’s for me, and I can respect why people like the style
Edit: that being said, I don’t understand why there’s drama over this lol
loool i do quite like it although i see what you mean, all the drama started after an artist was called out for....
@@MohammedAgbadi Damn… Honestly this artstyle shouldn’t be canceled, even if I’m not a huge fan of it. Still, mad respect to you for liking the style😊
To be honest it looks like someone pinched Lord Gris's aesthetic (their art is wonderful btw)and called it something else, then chose to gatekeep it. Ita look that appeals to a certain age group and there's nothing wrong with it, especially when companies like Disney ect have been making characters with those looks for years. It's just unfortunate that some very petty people decide that they are the sole creators of it when it's been around for more that a decade or two. Some art drama is just teenagers who you hope grow out of it.
I don't even know what's going on cuz I'm hiding in what's left of Tumblr reading and writing fanfics, AUs and theories about silly 70s puppets.
Im honestly so done with the art community. I took a break because of art block and came back to everyone hating on the jelly artstyle (I have always been drawing like that but I never knew it even had a name) I don't know what to do because I can't just give up on my natural artstyle
this drama always happens to artists who draw pinterest girls, like i for one am interested in all the little details in these arts but for like a hot minute. theyre all the same after that tbh. not to slam though, i think this artist's work is more diverse and interesting than most pinterest girl artists out there
That being said, it seems some of the drama is because of how childish and obviously dumb the artists who started all of this is. Like, imagine how will they react whenever someone tells them that their art is basically a derivative of Manhwa.
i enjoy her art too ngl, i enjoy the pinterest gilr aesthetic and artists who draw it well with good anatomy really make the style enjoyable to look at
Imagine how many famous art movements would have died if the art "community" and social media had existed at the time, going around accusing people of "stealing artstyles." The jelly art style isn't a movement per se, but art movements are defined as, "a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a specific period of time, (usually a few months, years or decades)," (Wikipedia).
Also, taking inspiration from other people's art is how one finds their "style," and even if their style isn't 100% unique, or strongly resembles someone else's, that's OKAY and does NOT give you any right to harass them.
It's sad because half of art communities dramas are just teens throwing shit at each other because they don't understand how communities/art communities work
You make such good points in every video. I knew nothing about this so ty for making me know
There is actually a video of her live stream where she completely berates the young artist and also sp3aking about how they would do it again despite knowing the kid wasn't trying to steal their art on purpose which rubbed me the wrong way
holy shit no way?? its already hard to sympathize with her because of her attitude but this is just really gross... 😭😭she really doesnt know how to act with such a big and influential platform, especially with mostly kids and teens as her fans. she really should get off her high horse and start to question herself, but i doubt she'll do that anytime soon (or maybe ever)
@@reigenarataka-od8bb it really is, I hate big influencers with that mindset because in no way can you change it because she’s loving the new attention she’s getting from it

@@MohammedAgbadi it would be nice but that's too wholesome and peaceful haha
Art is so personalized and varied that of course not every style is going to resonate with some people the way it would inspire another. That doesn't mean that the art is wrong or bad, or the people who like it are wrong/bad. Just give something a like, or don't, and move on.
This is so surprising for me because the last time I was on my art account for TikTok everyone loved the jelly style sm 😭 people switch up so fast 🤦♀️
Making tutorials then being upset when people use them and end up with a similar style is like ordering tuna salad and being upset it has fish in it. And stuff like this is why I just prefer to keep to the niche circles I am part of instead of going for the more mainstream when it comes to art.
The only thing I think purrikkaa did wrong was have the 13 year old bullied, especially since there was a speed paint of it being done proving it wasn’t traced
Everything she did is wrong not just one thing
she wants people to not use her art as reference which is something she has no authority over. im a 17 year old artist (younger than her, embarrassing) and even i know that request is just straight up stupid and gives off "MY TOTALLY ORIGINAL OC DEW NOT STEAWL" energy. shes using a style literally thousands of others use with nothing that makes her original. it just reeks of thinking youre better and more entitled to the style than everyone else. personally, i can recreate one of her pieces in under an hour. the jelly style is abhorrently easy.
@@mxcksrealmNot to mention, she literally posts tutorials about her art style 😭 how can she NOT expect people to not find inspiration from her art??
U don't think her calling some1 a p3do is wrong ?
Even though i never watched or knew you, THIS IS SO RELATABLE, AND NEW SUB
I didn't even know the style had a name, but I know I love it a lot. It will never fail to amaze me how basic and unclean the strokes are once you zoom in but how detailed and soft und juicy and lifelike everything looks otherwise. I absolutely love and adore that.

The art community has become this bad irl too. I was an art major at university (WAS), had my very first art classes this one semester, and let me tell you.... the people alone were one of my biggest reasons for changing my major. I realized these buttheads all thinking they're "right" made me start to hate making art. On the bright side, it also made me realize that art really is only a hobby for me, so I'll keep it that way. I'm in the science field now and I am a lot happier with my major change, so maybe it's a good thing the art community is in shambles if it means helping me realize my true passions 😄

One thing I do agree with in regards to the drama is the distaste for Puririka. Not due to her art but based on how she responds to people using her tutorials. She encouraged the harassment of a 13 year old on discord for a referenced drawing they did in regards to her art.

@@ultraboombeanIt reminds me of when people went crazy over “the tumblr art style” or more specifically “tumblr noses”.
It just showed me that some people… don’t go outside? I would say that close to half of the human population has a nose that’s a different color/shade than the rest of their face, *_especially_* if they live in colder climates with lighter skin. The “tumblr nose” is literally just a facial feature… a lot of people have…
It was a real touch grass event for me. Seeing people say “you make everyone look drunk or feverish!! it’s ugly and weird and unrealistic” as I side-eye into the mirror with a naturally pigmented nose like I was on the office
@@baydiacTbf I think most of the outrage over the Tumblr art style was based around art with excessive amounts of neon red blush everywhere on the face and joints, which is definitely an uncommon and borderline unrealistic feature. But the art was usually made by beginner to intermediate artists who were clearly just trying to replicate the more realistic appearances of those features (like people’s skin in colder climates / dolly makeup trends), they just struggled with the execution because they were still learning art fundamentals. It’s not necessarily that people misunderstood what that art style was going for, they just didn’t like the execution and decided to bully kids over it.
Pretty much the same thing happening with the jelly art style unfortunately.
@@catcactus1234but, like, thTs your opinion man
@@catcactus1234basically you're missing the point. People create art for fun. Not to be "expert" at it. So what if a lot of people draw in calarts style? It makes them happy. People have forever drawn "unrealistic" and poor proportioned art
Another thing that I hate the most is when these people on tt keep hating artists for not drawing what they want. Like I see so many people said this person is a bad artist because they don’t draw other races/body types/sexes/features and I completely disagree with this type of art shaming because not everyone is a professional artist who can draw everything and most of the time, artists like to draw something they want/good at and stay in that comfort zone, and it’s totally doesn’t make anyone a bad artist by doing that at all. Like their standards and expectations in artists are so high nowadays that if it’s let down, you could be bullied by so.
Exactly, they just want you to produce for them and not for themselves. And artist does not exist just for you

As an artist, I never wanted to be in the art community, just because people can be so toxic. But at the same time, I enjoy drawing. I wish people could stop being so cruel to one another. :(
I started on DeviantArt around when it first started (older artist, AYYYY) and this issue is a tale as old as time. I remember drawing like an artist I loved and idolized back then and also got dog piled by her fans for it, and this was well before anything like tiktok existed. I evolved my own style eventually. But truly, this is just how artists find themselves.
I cant render properly without nice contrasting shadows, these jelly renders really r amazing
i agree that riri should’ve handled it better, there’s no justification for what she did. i do believe that age isn’t an applicable argument in this situation - all though she should’ve for sure known better if she’s been on the internet for any amount of time - but the most disgusting thing imo is that she said on a live that she’d do it all again for the clout. and honestly, i really like the jelly art style! it’s really appealing to me! but riri needs to set a better example for younger and impressionable artists.
yeah!! age really isnt a reliable thing, because people can still act immaturely regardless of age. she really just doesnt know how to act with such a big following that consists of mostly minors, and her attitude is just making things worse
I disagree on the age thing. An 18 year old, like myself, should have better control over themselves. Behaving more like a middle schooler than the ACTUAL middle schooler is crazy. You know?
Shes 18 she knows better, She’s just an immature 18yrold.
Also 18 is barely hitting adulthood, but suddenly it's "she should've known better, she's an adult". She should've known better because of her many years of being on internet, not because of her age
age is pretty important when it comes to this especially since this is about art and a beginner artist is usually young and doesnt understand the rules of the community. Riri is older meaning she knows more she was immature in an arrogant way not an ignorant way
Why does she make tutorials on how to draw like her if she doesn’t want people referencing her art?
bc she’ll get called a gatekeeper if she doesn’t?..
Honestly the art style looks quite appealing to me. My art is lined so i respect the patience it takes to render because i certainly don't have it. But I do believe Riri is most in the wrong here. While their wish to not have their work heavily referenced should be respected, because their art is characterized by specific facial features like the puffy eyes, round face, "juicy" lips, and is limited to drawing character's from the head up, people in this comments pointed out that that was pretty much all the younger artist has to go off, which i don't disagree with.
I feel like people are calling the art style ugly, either because they can't separate it from Riri or they're being overly critical, in my opinion. but I agree with the criticisms of the style being highly limited, and having same face syndrome.
It reminds me of when people starting calling someone ugly just because they hate them... like, just because they're a bad person doesn't give you a free pass. It also insults other people that have similar looks, or in this case, art styles. Good video Mohammed.
I’m sorry, insanely off topic but I love that you used the Bully music in this vid 🥹 so nostalgic
Every artist always tries to imitate their favorite artist. Literally thats what every art teacher tell you “study the greats, figure out why they did that, follow their discipline”. Any other Artist now, later in the years when they are no longer in this world, there would be others who would try to imitate them, study them, in the future. Just like all of us who are doing it right now. Homegirl can’t get mad once shes no longer in this world. 😂
I don't understand when an artist posts are their process and says "don't copy my process."
Don't post it then
I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I've taken other artists art style and tried to recreate it. Literally the biggest inspiration for my art is death note. A lot of younger artists do the same and its really helpful to helping them figure out what they want their art to look like.
The only reason I don’t like new art styles like this is because they only focus on Asian beauty standards, but are the same people who get made if you don’t have diversity in your art.
Social media... Social media never changes.
This is one of those current trend dramas that I'm so desensitized to. Like, this video almost gives me a weird sense of nostalgia. In the 2010's we had Tumblr callout posts, DeviantArt calls to action for "stealing references," and Twitter outrage. Now we have art trend drama on Tiktok, callout posts on Reddit, and Twitter outrage. Instagram, TH-cam, and Facebook aren't exempt from the cycle either but Tumblr and DeviantArt were just so... iconic in some twisted way.
So for me, although I feel jaded about it, I'm disappointed to see minors and beginner artists catching the brunt of the drama. Again. And again. I appreciate how you're able to cover this in a humorous but more importantly an empathetic way. A lot of people get really into the bystander role when this stuff happens and I don't blame em - schadenfreude is a pervasive phenomena after all. For me I can't tell if I watch these kinds of videos for entertainment or because I'm enraptured seeing a 50 car pile up with two trucks on fire crashing in front of my eyes.
Every “I hate X art style,” translates to:
“I’m jealous I’m not as skilled as this individual” or “I’m not as committed to my craft and don’t dedicate the time to practice and improve,” or “I am not really part of this community, but happened across it randomly and my life was so boring that I needed to find meaning in something, latched onto the art community, and follow the toxic vocal minority so I feel like I belong, because it’s easier to be negative and critical than express optimism and support others.”
Tribalism is terrifyingly hardwired into all of us. As a 45-year-old professional artist and designer, this is nothing new. The kids in my junior high would argue endlessly about the art styles of Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Greg Capullo; anime styles versus American comic styles, or realism (ala Heavy Metal Magazine) versus what Alex Ross was doing. It’s all the same; a bunch of wannabe artists who don’t put the time and effort into their art projecting jealousy into the community as vitriol.
I don't put much effort into improving since I hate the fundamentals, but I wholeheartedly agree that it's no excuse to hate other artists and their styles.
Literally.
I disagree. No need to spread around hate and target artists, but I really hate some art styles. They are just too damn ugly, it's not that I look up to them and want to be able to draw like that, I just don't want to have anything to do with some styles. I do not go around and comment that on peoples art though. That is toxic troll behaviour. I just click not interested and move on.
People have tastes, some people like this, some people like that.
Disagree. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you're jealous. I personally don't like it because of my own aesthetic tastes. When you make a public spectacle of how much you don't like a thing though, that's when the insecurities start to peek through.
I disagree. You can be committed and skilled to your craft, but you can still have an opinion! Sure going out and actively hating, is wrong, unnecessary and waste of time, but someone having a dang opinion doesn't equal to "Well I'm just jealous and not skilled" bull crap.
