  • Agility Robotics is excited to unveil the next generation of Digit, the first human-centric, multi-purpose robot made for logistics work. Digit is designed from the ground up to go where people go and do useful work safely in spaces designed for people, starting with bulk material handling within warehouses and distribution centers.

I really dig the design. It's not uncanny like some of the other attempts at humanoid robots, since it's not trying to look like a human. Kinda gives me some Star Wars droid vibes.

I agree. They also talk about how they do subtle body language cues to make it feel less robotic and creepy.

The robot doesn't need legs like people have. It can use a sturdier box frame with rollers or some other design. But, they wanted it to look more like a person.

I like the "eyes". The fact they move in the direction that Digit is about to turn is a very intuitive way to communicate turning intent. Flashing amber lights like a car would work, too, but the way Digit looks probably would not make humans think of them the same way as a car, so I think its more intuitive to break convention here.
    I like it very much!

    • @vshah1010

People will assemble robots. There will be jobs that are low skilled that most people can be trained on without having a degree.
Some people say there will be more skilled tech and engineering jobs, but I disagree. There will be people that do the cables or specialized mechanical steps. Most of the jobs are low tech with very few design engineers and skilled technicians. Technicians won't be skilled. They will do mostly testing, and alot or most of this will be automated. So your testing of automation robots will be automated. I don't expect fixing robots will be skilled. For one thing, it's usually less expensive to swap out boards than to fix even one part, as I was told.
Upgrades are done by re-programming the chip. But, that's just following a series of steps. I have seen this job assigned to people that have no such background in programming microcontrollers, and they just follow the steps. And, people are able to re-program the boards without having a technical background.
There is alot of competition for the skilled jobs. You can get a 4 year degree and not get the job. There are just so many people more qualified than me or you. That's what you should expect and this is the attitude that you should have. That there is always someone out there better than you.
You may get a job such as test technician that is low skilled for your degree, so you probably won't be without a job. But, it won't be the skill level that you hoped for after getting a degree.
About unions in tech manufacturing jobs:
Let's hope that there is a union, if you are a low level employee, or you won't be paid well. A union is not good for technicians since within a union you can do another step since it will be "taking away another persons job". So, it lowers the skills of technicians whose job may already be low skilled. But, that's one of the things that goes with a union manufacturing job.
If you get promoted out of the union, into Engineering, don't expect to get design or good assignments. You can be a low level person there. Maybe doing drawings, researching parts, calling suppliers, doing reports, charts and graphs, bidding on test fixture projects. Maybe you might get to do test automation and even that's not guaranteed. No one aspires to the test automation job, certainly not me.

"allowing humans to be more human" sounds a good ad, but humanity became human by doing these things, digging the soil, extracting minerals, gathering fruits, hunting and transporting them. when we stopped doing this physical work, we needed gyms to replace the calories spent by these actions we did to live, and those who did not spend these calories became deformed and unhealthy. so your slogan that means "human beings should not do physical actions" seems very artificial.
