If I were in a Byzantine family I would not feel comfortable living near the border. Seeing as how incompetent the Byzantine army is against nomadic armies and basically most of its history since the time of Justinian.
Hastings changed the history of England only. Saxons were in rule there before and again they came to rule after Normans. Manzikert changed the history of all Europe permanantly. Seljuks caused the Crusades and Ottomans shaped the map of eastern Europe.

This battle and the civil war that followed it are some of the most interesting times in all of history. Great video. For anyone interested, The Alexiad by Anna Comnena is a fantastic source for the aftermath of this battle. It's the only recorded instance of a princess writing a history about her own father, the emperor Alexius Komnenus.
I've just started reading that book. Pretty good so far! The author is apparently Anna Komnena, a Byzantine princess AND Alexios' own daughter. Pretty cool!

Georgi Babayan If we are gonna come up with excuses then in the siege of vienna, Murat Giray han betrayed and stab the Ottomans from the back.Which cause Ottomans to loose, or in Ottoman-Timurlane war, Ottomans were also betrayed by their allie as well and lost the war which caused series of civil war. He lost the battle because the second army never came back (treachery) and most of his cavarly who suppose to protect the flanks left him in the middle of the battle (treachery #2). Without the treacheries he couldn't lose this battle, just imagine the same battle but with cavarly coming to help the flank and a second army coming propably from the other flank that didn't even need support.

Very interesting video, actually, the Seljuqs are much neglected as a part of the world history... and that is wrong as they were pretty important for the events after them
Seljuk made the way for Ottomans, who ever obey Seljuks also did for Ottomans, many people think Turks are newborn nation. Turks had 16 empires in the passed and a lot countries. Seljuks and Ottomans are only last 2 of the 16 empires. Not less important ofc
Middle East history is often taught (especially in the middle east, ironically, for political reason) as one big stream of events under a general muslim guidance. Thus, we lost a lot of the subtility of what was going on.
its not the same like that, about 1000 years ago many turkic tribes where alot closer to eachother in language, culture and so on... also before that all turkic tribes where united as a single nation, also will i like to add the term turkic people is western terminology in old chinese manuscripts or on turkic carvings from thousands of years old it was just called turk not turkic
At the end, it actually happened, maybe not in the sense you put here, but somehow in next 200 years, at the borderland Bithynia, where local Rumi and nomadic Turkic cultures joined to form a new unique identity and it has truely been crazy as you expected. It is called Ottomans.
@علي ياسر "Rumi" (Romiai) refers rather to geography. Once I was thinking like most Turks are Islamized Romans. However this is proven wrong in recent research. Approximately 60% of Turkish population today is actually Turkic. The mistake is historical bias, many authors assumed Turks came to Anatolia after Manzikert, and this was it. 40.000 soldiers (even this was not entirely Turkic) and their families, and decsendants...But this is not the all story. Actually Turkic tribes kept pouring into Anatolia after Manzikert, in waves. One wave in 12.-13. Century, which also brought Kayi tribe (Ottoman dinasty) mixed a huge nomadic Turkic population with already settled Beyliq People (original soldiers of Manzikert under Seljuk Sultan, like Karamanids, Germiyanids, Karesids, Menteshids, Saruhanids, Chandarids etc). Plus, a new and even bigger wave followed in 15'th-16'th Century (Alevid/Kalenderid Shia like Shasuvars, Shahkulus, Shirazids, Ilbeglis, Chepnics, etc.) especially after the fall of Aqqoyunlu and Dulkadir. And must remember many christianized Turkopolic tribes that already settled in Byzantine East, Armenia, Kurdistan, and Hisnqayfa, even before Manzikert. We have even an up to date study which shows how dramatically Greek/Rumi population declined after early Turkish conquest. The population of Anatolia drops from 8 million (in 11'th century) to 5 million (in 14'th century). Thus, entire demography actually changed, and there is no ground to deny that Turkey's modern population (or even late medieval/early modern population) is Turkic in majority.

the fall of constatinople make the Balkans the mess there are today [just saying one thing], killed a millennia civilization and culture, etc. It's a sad chapter in europe history.
They have pretty much restored the situation in the next century during the Komnenoi dynasty, taking control of the important coastal region and leaving the poor anatolian plateau to the Seljucs. Yet, the strategic plan after Manuel Komnenos reign, had fallen apart...
URM The fall of Constantinople did not kill a millenia civilization or culture, Christianity had already destroyed ancient Greek culture. The Byzantines saw their pagan ancestors as infidels, anything unrelated to Christianity was thrown away. Ironically, it is the Caliphates that preserved ancient Greek knowledge, while Byzantines erased it. When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire, the people had a horrible culture which only included making frescos. Stop blaming Ottomans for your own misery.

Seljuk Beg, commander of the Oghuz Army, is said to have been a general of the Khazars. Seljuk´s conversion to Islam came later on. His four sons carried biblical names: Yunus or Yusuf, Israil (Arslan), Mihail and Musa. Mihail´s two sons, Tughril and Chagri, were the principal founders of the Seljuk Empire. The Seljuk generals were excellent military men. The real question is why the Oghuz moved towards the West and the answer might be the quest of easily conquered territories belonging to East Rome.
They migrated primarily because the Kipchaks with whom they were warring for generations were gradually winning the fight and quite possible the Oghuz leadership during the time of Seljuq were incompetent, therefore caused a kind of a civil war.
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Romanos Diogenes? With no reconnaissance Romanos was blind on the battlefield, which cost him the war, later he was literaly blinded before he died, ironic
It's sad how he was betrayed by his own people though, they fully went and blinded him in front of everyone after an agreement and then sent him a letter knowing he was blind and couldn't read
He was blinded of power when he thought of marrying the widowed Byzantine queen, thought of conquering Iran and Iraq and told the seljuq sultan he had won the battle even before the battle started.
@@ΒασιλείατῶνῬωμαῖων Everywhere it is.... United barbarik Franks stopped Arab Invasion while a feuding legendary Eastern Roman Empire constantly lost lands to the Islam. It is everywhere elsewhere. Feuding Sassanid empire got wiped out. Feuding Arabs got conquered and Islamized. Feuding turks got islamized. Feuding Indian kingdoms got defeated before Muslim armies. If your family is in civil war, third party will make benefit of it obviously. Islamic empires proved it time and again. This policy of "Divide and Rule" was later succesfully applied by British Empire when they took control over India and other South Asian countries from infighting Muslim and other religious kingdoms.
I have searched literature about this battle. Yes, its true that Manzikert Battle have great influences. As usual great depiction about layout and strategy in battlefield. I like it.
I first learned of this battle reading Julius Norwich excellent history of Byzantium. Diogenes was up against from the start. The theme system had collapsed, having to rely on mercenaries. Having to get a victory no matter what as the chances of raising an army of this size again were probably slim. Tactically 3 mistakes. Splitting your army, always a risky tactic before the age of radio communications. Not scouting the enemies position and strength Relying on one of the Doukas to command the rear guard . Given the Doukas hated him this seems a very stupid decision Also faced a very capable foe. Great video. Factual and unbiased
I am really liking your videos. Not only on the amazing style and presentation, but also for the through research and historical composure that you keep. That, and also for letting battles like this also to get a mention and not just focus on the most over-used and learned parts of the history.
Nope. Abbasids have Caliphate. And Turks are also Muslims. Massive population of Turks didnt want to fight with the Caliphate if its not necessary. After that days, we saw the who has "skills".
Some historians also claim that Tarchaneiotes, the commander of the 30.000 troops detachment also betrayed Romanos along with Dukas, since his army at the time of the battle was positioned 150 km away from where they were supposed to be and to add to this claim, not a single messenger was sent to Romanos by Tarchaneiotes to notify him of his detachment’s whereabouts.

I used to believe that external threats and internal crises caused the Byzantine Empire to fall with roughly equal contributions. Watching a series on Netflix, Dirilis Ertugrul and while loosely base don historical events, it's sparked immense curiosity for the events leading up to the breakup of the Caliphates, the rise of the Seljuks and the Mongol interregnum (as I call it) before the rise of the Ottoman Empire.
Someone said: Vikings, Mongols, Turks... European Horror story. Did he forgot that, Europeans.. African and Native American horror story and even today still horror story.
Yeah genoese crossbowman specially. But in real life if a horde of mounted man charges toward you you flee. And usually composite bow of horse archers has more range so if you put your archers front line cavalry will charge. If you put the. Back horse archer will harass footman. If you charge to them with cavalry they run back while shooting you because they dont have armored horse and they have Light equipment. So Best thing you can do is not fighting them on open terrain.
I feel that the numbers of the Seljuk army should be talked about too. As a side note, Alp Arslan was besieging Syrian Aleppo with an Army of 100.000 men when he heard news of Romanos army approaching (though totally unaware of its massive size). The Seljuk emissaries sent to Romanos were met with Romanos' arrogance to take Iran Iraq and the entire muslim lands such extraordinary was the size of his army even for Byzantine standards. 100.000 men seems an accurate estimation but only for actual fighting army without logistical aid, siege engineers, etc. (Large siege equipments were being transported in his campaign as well.) Alp Arslan abandoned the siege of Aleppo but left his main army to take Aleppo and Syria. Thus, Alp Arslan also canceled his expedition to Egypt to annihilate the Shia Fatimid caliphate and swiftly moved with a force of 20.000 to meet the Byzantines. When his emissaries returned Alp Arslan was informed about the size of the Roman army. Thus he requested from his main army from Syria 20.000 soldiers. And another 10.000 from the eastern province of his empire. He had done so quickly and had no time calling his main army. So with he went to meet the Romans with only a fraction of his army with approximately 50 - 60.000 men. The Kurdish Marwanids a vassal dynasty to the Seljuks were aware of the existential threat the Romans posed to them because they were literally the closest target of the Roman army and sent to mounted units to aid the Seljuks.
To be honest, it is not clear how that would have worked. Early Seljuqs didn't have harems as other Muslim leaders so it could have been a real monogamic marriage.
But the Ottoman did married Byzantine princess thou, not just once but multiple times....so technically the Ottoman were the predecessor of the Byzantine empire because most of their Sultan got Greek Byzantine royal blood in them.
Mobility is such an advantage since even if you lose the battle you can still retreat and save your troops unlike the slow heavy western forces that when they lose, get completely annihilated.
This is the problem for defeating nomadic tribe. Hit and run tactic. Nomadic has speed and flexibility. Trained horsemen and archers, also with flexible armor mostly made by leather. While well established country relied on armor for defense, big sword and spears which impaired speed and stamina to pursue them.

Lets be honest, you are just a butthurt armenian and want to erase the identtiy of turks. Nope, armenians arent native to anatolia, anatolia was origianlly populated by urartu and hattians. these people didint speak an indo europeans langauge, it was only that these people were replaced by armenians and greeks who came later. Indo europeans came from ukraine not from anatolia. Got that? They were killed and assimilate by greeks and armenians. And later came turks. Btw. how do you want to know that the invading turks did only number up to a million? Do you really believe that a small population can assimilate a bigger population? There are many genetic studies done on turks, also one that says that at least 30% of their genetics derrives from central asian nomadic turks. Its just that the rest was mixed because of mixing over time. Also, you didint read the study itself. it never said that only 13% of turks are of real turkic background, it said that all turks on average have a 13% central admixture. Its only that over time the central asian admixture was reduced over time by mixing. We're turks. deal with it.

Man a alliance between the Byzantine emperor and the Seljuqs through major would have been crazy

Stop blaming Ottomans for your own misery.
you speak full of hate, why? I made a comment, I am not speaking against turks and your people, I just really think it was a brutal and sad chapter in mankind.

The History of Michael Attaleiates is a great source on the events after the battle of Manzikert. That contemporary general/historian believed that the corrupted leaders after Romanos Diogenes caused the fall of Asia Minor to the Turks by their repressive policies over the population. Great presendation of the battle guys! Again Congrats!
if diogenes did not killed maybe selcuks would no go deep into anatolia if there was a royal marriage the history would be totally different

Hakodesh Shalom :D
Yunus Yusuf are also islamic names... you theory is wrong.
@@finalfrontier001 Ionas and Joseph, only with Turkish pronounciation.
That works everywhere. :-)
And alp arson’s took him as his guest and set him free rather than taking him as a POW. That is true hospitality

Not scouting the enemies position and strength
Relying on one of the Doukas to command the rear guard . Given the Doukas hated him this seems a very stupid decision
Also faced a very capable foe.

That is a valid point. Some historians claim that the Seljuks spread a rumor that Romanos is already defeated.

I used to believe that external threats and internal crises caused the Byzantine Empire to fall with roughly equal contributions. Learning that they let down an acceptable peace offer by the Seljuks because of a revolt and considering the backstory behind the sack of Constantinople in 1204 I now start to think that mostly they themselves fucked it up 😔

If Total war ever taught me something, it's to bring foot archers against horse archers.

(Large siege equipments were being transported in his campaign as well.)
Alp Arslan abandoned the siege of Aleppo but left his main army to take Aleppo and Syria.
Yes. The Seljuk army consisted of approximately 50,000 Turkish and 5,000 Kurdish warriors.
Fantastic description and illustration !
I had no idea that the seljuqs and the byzantines where so close to having a royal marriage.
@@wewenang5167 doesn't make much sense. A predecessor comes before. The osmanoglus came centuries after the byzantines.
Mobility is such an advantage since even if you lose the battle you can still retreat and save your troops unlike the slow heavy western forces that when they lose, get completely annihilated.
That is true, you can defeat a mobile army, but destroying it completely is hard.
This is a important battle in Turk history. We study it many times in history class. Its the battle which opened the gates of Anatolia to the Turks which still live there.
I am pretty sure that your government promotes a propagandised version of history. Unfortunately, they don't present history from a neutral and objective perspective.
Perie, original anatolians werent indo europeans, but nice try
Perrie 4 million migrated to anatolia with this war and after the other invades with ottomans 7 million people came again to Anatolia.
