over the past few months I too have converted to full mirrorless with the same set up (R5). I am getting use to it and quite enjoy the 100-500 RF. It performed well in my recent landscape trip to Colorado for the Fall color change. Thanks for this.
Thanks Robert, it's good to hear from someone who has success with the same setup.. Looking forward to trying some landscape with it also. Cheers Keith
A really nice video with lots of still images and I like the fact that you leave the settings on long enough for us to read, a lot of TH-camrs don’t do that and you have to rewind. I bought the R7 a few months ago with the 100-400RF lens but upgraded to the 100-500RF a week or so ago as Canon had a great double cashback offer. I’ve only been able to use it once as we’ve been having awful weather but look forward to getting out with my new setup.
Thanks David, I appreciate your comment. Great setup you have there and you will get good reach with the crop sensor on the R7. The weather has been so bad but hopefully, the light will improve soon and you can get out and use it. Cheers Keith
Beautiful photos and clips KG. You are right about the smooth background the lens produces. Sometimes when I get home from a trip to the park and look at my photos, it a mazes me how a zoom lens with an f/7.1 separates my subjects from the background. I got the same combination about a year and half ago and have had no regrets.
Thanks Danny. Great to hear from someone with the same setup and that it work well for them. I am still really enjoying the lens and definitely have no complaints. Appreciate you commenting, cheers Keith
Hi Keith, Looks like a nice lens, the photo's appear nice and sharp. It's nice to see some starlings, I cannot remember the last time I saw one of these. I look forward to more from your new lens...🙂👍🏻
A great video, so nice to hear someone just give an honest, heartfelt, real-world opinion about something without bombarding me with tech info, very refreshing! Only just discovered your channel and website as I was searching for exactly this type of 'review' on the RF 100-500. I too use the R5 having just swapped out my R6, and have used the EF 100-400 Mk2 for some time now and think it's a superb lens, but thinking of upgrading to the RF 100-500. It's a big decision if you don't have a money-tree in the back garden, it's not a cheap lens! To be honest I've been quite blown away by the autofocus using the R5 so far, I'm getting far better results than I ever did with the R6 which has both pleased and surprised me. I'm still hesitating to move up to the RF 100-500 mainly because of the outlay, but your video here has convinced me just that little bit more that it would be a good move, your images look fab! Your list of gear on the website is nearly a carbon copy of my own lol! I still can't part with my 7D Mk2, still love it! Looking forward to seeing more of your great work on here and the website, take care! 🙂
Thanks Tim really great to hear form you and thanks for the support. I guess if I didn't have a little spare money I would have stuck with the 100-400 as I really loved that lens. I had a 7Dii as a backup but sold it to pay towards the lens. I have thought that if I need to get a backup I would go for the R7 as I have seen some great results from that. Whatever you decide enjoy and I am sure you will get some great images. Cheers Keith
Hi Steve. Really pleased with the set-up and look forward to using it more. I guess at the end of the day Canon or Sony you can't really go wrong. Look forward to seeing which way you go. Cheers Keith
Hi Keith really pleased for you with your new lens it's going to be fun watching what you get with it. Whilst I don't understand any of the tec side of things I do enjoy watching you guys on TH-cam and I learn bits and pieces along the way. Until next time take care and stay safe my friend
Thanks Clive. Yes really looking forward to putting it through its paces. As you can see I don't fully understand the Tech either... 😂. Take care mate, cheers Keith
Nice bit of kit there Keith. Paired with the high MP sensor of thr R5 you will get some lovely detail in your images, & can still afford to crop in if needed without worrying too much about detail loss. As for the F7.1 aperture, as you know most lenses (even F2.8 or F4 prime lenses) have their own 'sweet spots' which are usually a couple of stops higher than the maximum aperture that the lens offers. I've found that my Canon 400 F4 DO is superb at F6.3 - F8, sure it's nice at F4 too but seems sharper stopped down a bit. As you said in your video, a slight change of background can make all, the difference too, whether that's by taking a step or two sideways, or by raising or lowering the lens it's worth experimenting with the backgrounds to make your subject really pop. Great vlog as always mate. Keep on keeping on! Best, Nick
Hi Nick. Appreciate the thoughts and some great points made. So far I am really pleased with this setup and it has spurred me on to get out there and do more. Background for me makes or breaks an image and separates the good images from the special images. Thanks again mate, cheers Keith.
Hi Keith great video as usual and the lens results look great. I’m an R6 user and I’ve gone native too however I picked up a used rf800 F11 which performs great. Ok it’s fixed F11 but as long as you position your backgrounds as best you can you still get a nice background.
Hi Keith, that's why I don't go to that sort of show I can spend enough just going to my local camera shop. Great pictures and video I think you're going to enjoy that lens.👍
Lovely images. Thanks for sharing, My main set-up for birding is the R7 with the RF 100-500. Not only is the reach remarkable (800 mm equivalent field of view), image quality is spectacular, as expected from an L-series lens. It's also hard to get too worked up about F 7.1 at 500 mm when you consider that this aperture only kicks in at about 450 mm. The lens OIS also works exceptionally well with the R7 IBIS. The minimum focal distance of less than 1m was an unexpected bonus. And low light performance is not the issue some believe it to be. After all, only a few years ago, DSLR autofocus would fail beyond F8, and high ISO limitations seem moot with modern sensors and de-noising software. And while some may still prefer the new RF 200-800 in terms of reach and cost, I think it's hard to beat this combination.
Thanks for the comment. Sounds like you are really impressed with the combination. The R7 produces some great images and serval of my friends use it. The only reason I went for the R5 was the video features which I need and I plan to get an R7 as a backup body at some stage. Thanks again cheers Keith
Great stuff, if you're happy we're happy! In good light it'll be fine I am sure. I have seen great images from a Sony A9 + 200-600mm with the 1.4x TC (f9) in good light. And recovering shadows and highlights etc in post production is a lot easier with these newer sensors and mirrorless cameras. Enjoy your purchase :)
Lovely video. Like many I also have the same setup. Made the leap in January from the 100-400mm and have not looked back. The extra 100mm focal length really helps as at most times I am at max focal range and with the extra 100mm although small, makes a massive difference when having to crop shots and still retain sharp images. Have had a good year using it here in the UK, Greece and the U.S and got some extra ordinary results. Expensive, YES, worth it.. Every single penny. Cannot fault it. 🙂 Give it a go for some hand held moon shots, the detail it captures is off the scale, and even being able to capture the Orion Nebula non tracked (crap tripod problem though) has opened up a few more avenues for me to explore. Keep up the great work and enjoy the lens. 🙂
Thanks Rik, brilliant mate. I have certainly not heard anybody have a bad word for the lens yet and like you I think it is worth every penny. I also love this setup and it makes it really difficult to justify something like a 400 f2.8, a lens I have had my eye on for a while. You have me interested in trying some more night sky shooting now so lets see what happens. Thanks again mate, cheers Keith
It really seems like an awesome lens. I’ve just purchased it online in combination with an R7, which I hope will allow me to handhold 800mm and just walk around with it. If the animal eye works as good as they say the number of keepers I’ll get will multiply by 5. Can’t wait.
I think you will really like it mate. I have a few friends who have the R7 and they are very happy with it. I am thinking of getting an R7 as a back up body. The animal eye is an amazing tool. Enjoy.
Everyone seems to love the RF 100-500, of course being Sony I like the extra 100mm the Sony 200-600mm f5.6 -6.3 offers ! But what a great combo for Canon 👍
Was wondering you tried the 100-500 lens with the R5 using the 1.6 crop factor option in the R5? I tired it a few times with mixed results. I am shooting at times long distance antelope and other wildlife on the prairies of Wyoming. I purchased the R5 and 100-500 when living in Mississippi where birds and wildlife was much closer.
I hired an RF 100-500 and eventually bought one to replace the EF 100-400 and absolutely no regrets, apart from using the RF 1.4 extender, so annoying not having the full zoom capability. Also have the RF 800 f11, which seldom comes out now I have the 100-500 🤷🏼♂️
Good to hear Roger. I am loving the lens. I have heard that you can only use limited zoom with the extender but to be honest it is not really something I am considering at the moment. Thanks for watching. Cheers Keith
Thanks for the comments. Enjoyed watching your video. I have this lens on the R6 and really enjoying it and capturing some super images. Can you tell me where you got your lens cover from please? Thanks
@@KGsPhotography thanks. That’s helpful. I assume that you are very happy with the cover. It gets mixed reviews on Amazon. Anyway, thanks again. Much appreciated
Yes I am happy with it had no problems and it’s been on for a year. But cheaper thank some of the makes but I think does the job ok. Some have a plastic covering the adjustment buttons which this doesn’t but to be honest personally I prefer that.
I'm glad Canon set the bar nice and high so when 3rd party manufacturers are allowed to start making RF mount lenses they will give mirrorless body owners an affordable super zoom that doesn't break the bank.
Hi Keith, some nice images on there, I’m contemplating a move from the 500/4 to the 1-5, I also have a Mk1 1-4 and have considered a switch to the Mk2 with a 1.4x TC, did you ever try that combo ? I have an R6, the IBIS has allowed me to shoot the 500/4 handheld with a Black Rapid strap something I could never do with my DSLR, it was far too wobbly. I am concerned about the ISO, my walk around settings used to be ISO 800 at F7.1, the 500/4 has allowed much faster shutter speeds and a vastly improved noise level. The 500/4 is a difficult act to follow……………..😮
Thanks mate. I used to have the 1-4 Mk2 and the 1.4x. The lens was great but I did not get on with the 1.4x, I just found the images went a little soft. The move from the F4 to F7.1 will be a big difference, but to be honest I find if I need to shoot at higher ISO noise reduction software nowadays cleans things up great. My dream lens is the 400 f2.8 but the price is a little steep 😂. I have just ordered an RF1.4x so looking forward to trying that on the 1-5. Cheers Keith
Thanks John. Yes I do leave the IS on. I know some people say you shouldn't when mounted on a tripod. The only time I may turn it off is when I am taking a landscape image and have the 2 sec timer on so I don't have to touch the camera. Cheers Keith
Thanks, John. Most of my images are taken on a tripod as I have to do the video as well. I do occasionally have a walk around and am happy to take shots handheld with it. Because I shoot in RAW I do have to process the images so yes a little sharpening is always added in Lightroom. Cheers Keith
7.1 aperture is fine in good light but how are you finding it Keith in lower light or woodland for instance, I have no doubt it’s a sharp lens, but low light high iso could be an issue… Great images and video, thanks for sharing..
Thanks Phil. Yes that is the downside but as I tried but probably failed to explain (lol) if I zoom back to 370mm I can still get the f5.6 that I have with the 100-400. The other thing is with noise reduction software been so good nowadays, I am not so concerned about higher ISO. Of course it is still a good excuse to keep saving for the 400 f2.8 😏. Cheers Keith
Nice photos. I have thought that the R5 /100-500 is the best bang for the $$$ for the last 1-1/2 yrs or so. Now that the A7R5/200-600 is out, it's a tough choice. Wait another 6-12 months & who knows what might be. You mentioned the garden in low light. Ever try using flash. I have this past year & was pleasantly surprised. Used the on-camera flash on the Nikon D810 at about 50-60' & worked out pretty good. Also on camera Nikon SB700 flash for herons at 125-150' distance for early morning light before the sun crept over a mountain it & worked out well also. Had a few alien eyes in some of the photos. Next time the opportunity presents using a flash, I'll try it with the Red Eye Reduction option turned on. Happy shooting.
Thanks Thomas. Yes that is the problem, technology just keeps moving on at a fantastic rate. At least it gives us something new to spend our money on.... 😂. Cheers Keith
Just got the 100-500 for the r7 got some great shots of kingfisher down on the local canal but gutted as a motorcyclist shot down the towpath so I positioned the camera behind me I didn’t realise till the day after when updating the firmware that 3 little tin splashes like pinhead size got on the front lens so I wets a new lens cloth with some lens cleaner lightly wipes it off to clean the lens and can’t believe it’s actually put 3 scratches on the lens I’ve just sold a 500 f4 is usm whic was like 20 years old and thsts been leane£ loads and had all sorts on it and no problems at all I can’t believe how delicate that front lens is or the coatings really delicate so I now look like having to send it off to see if it can be polished out 🥹🥹😢 I be only had the lens 3 days this happened on my 1st shoot gutted is a understatement
Wow mate understandable why you are gutted. The first thing I do with all my lenses is put a UV filter on the front to protect the lens glass. Don't take it off until I sell the lens. At leat that way any damage and I only have to replace the filter.
@@KGsPhotography I use to put filters in until I had the canon 100-400 mk2 a few years ago when the pics wasn’t sharp it turned out to be the filter which was fine on the wider lenses but just diminished quality on that lens really bad I couldn’t understand why so stopped using them after then only exception was for weather sealing on the 16-35 2.8 L mk2 . It wasn’t a cheap filter either so really baffled me
@@tintin69rr I guess you will always loose a little quality but if the filter is good enough it should be ok. Maybe it was just a one off bad filter. I had one on my 100-400 II also. Seemed ok. In fact it is the same filter I have on my RF100-500 now.
What was that Sound interference in the background whilst you talking ? And does the tripod mount offer stability and doesn't shake , move when you tighten the pod ?
I was using a wireless mic connected to my iPhone. Normally I use it with a lavalier mic fitted to it and don't get the buzzing. Yes the tripod mount is very stable although I do find the collar does not lock fully on the lens and the camera can twist even when locked.
Thanks Kathleen. I am a little confused, can you please give the timestamp as I can see the Snipe but can't see where I have referenced it as an Oystercatcher. Really appreciate your support. Thanks Keith

@@KGsPhotography I never thought about a TC on the 1-5, that’ll make an interesting video 👍
@@cerealkiller4248 hopefully will be doing one in a few weeks time when I have had a chance to play with it.
Hi Keith, I have the same setup and really enjoy your video. Do you keep the IS on when you mount the setup on the gimbal?
Thanks John. Yes I do leave the IS on. I know some people say you shouldn't when mounted on a tripod. The only time I may turn it off is when I am taking a landscape image and have the 2 sec timer on so I don't have to touch the camera. Cheers Keith
Great combo and really good results. Question - were you still images hand held. Did you have to sharpen the images in post processing?
Would love to see a Canon 200-600!
Now that would be interesting!
Hi, may I know the 100-400 you are talking about is mark 1 or 2 version?
It was a Mk 2 Lawrence
You can photograph red kytes from your garden?!?!? Keith!!!!
Yes they fly over every day Jeroen.

Great shots. 👍🏻 But you had an out of focus duck. 😆
Thanks good to know your checking. Not sure I was wearing shorts though 😂

Cracking video , but the bird you I.d as an Oystercatcher was a Snipe
Thanks Kathleen. I am a little confused, can you please give the timestamp as I can see the Snipe but can't see where I have referenced it as an Oystercatcher. Really appreciate your support. Thanks Keith
@@KGsPhotography around 8.14 Oystercatcher appears in the right hand corner but watching it again that’s the only bird you I.d so maybe I’ve misunderstood something
@@kathleeneveritt5340 thanks Kathleen, I think it maybe a link to another video at that stage. Had me worried for a minute though 😂. Appreciate you making the effort to comment though 😊
@@KGsPhotography apologies that I misunderstood , I did watch the video after a long very disappointing day at Frampton Marsh so not fully with it lol, again apologies
@@kathleeneveritt5340 no need to apologise, just happy to have you watching. Not been to Frampton for a while and have found it a little hit and miss sometimes. Lovely place though. Thanks again, cheers Keith
D 2,800/- for a focal lenth of 500mm f/7.1?! Sorry, it doesn't make sense to me. Both Nikon and Sony are producing better semi-pro telephoto lenses for their MILCs at reasonable prices.
You make a good point Quazi, but I still love my Canon 😊. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers Keith
your audio is bad
Thanks mate. Yes had a problem with one of my mics for a period.
