It's a fish farm that's come adrift. They're usually in bays and estuaries and used to farm fish (things like tuna, salmon, etc). When they're in operation, they have purse nets underneath - however these are removed for maintenance, or when the farm is not in use. What looks to have happened here is that a farm has come adrift from it's moorings. They're really common throughout aquaculture.

Its a bait wheel. It gets wrapped in netting and live bait gets thrown in it for later. We use those that size for pogies. Popular with charter fishing guys

I feel like it's used for something else. If I put a note on something intended for use in water, I'd definitely put a waterproof note on it instead of cardboard
It’s a old Salmon ring pen, back in early 2000s they had them all over the coast of Maine, but most of the business that used them got red of them. so that one probably was just cut adrift and left out in the ocean
No, these types of pens are still in use. It was steel pens that they stopped using. These pens, made of high density polyethylene, are still in extensive use

@weerdbeard The biggest ive use to work with in norway was about 650feet around and the nets were about 220feet deep. So pretty big, hard to change the nets on those suckers :)

On one hand we have issues with bycatch and bottom destruction (and in the case of lobstering, whale entanglement) but we also don't want fish farms because of domesticated fish escaping, and the waste from the pens. And the loudest people are the ones that know the least about the environment and the industry!

That’s definitely a bird stand, commonly used on cages of fish. It floats in the middle of the fish pen and the bird net sits on top of this thing you are looking at to keep it out of the water
Net pen for fish hatcheries, at least that’s what I think it is. We used a circular net pen here for our fish, only used to help the yearling acclimate to salt water than released them

As someone who married a commercial fisherman (eloped in college now divorced) the flood of memories of scrubbing monk fish guts from his clothes just came back to me. The smell. The laundry. Takes a special person to be with a fisherman…especially if they aren’t doing their own laundry or cooking and their truck smells like the red lobsters dumpster on a hot summer morning.
Damn... the way they are setting those traps is crazy! I'm impressed. The most I've fished is triples, so one after another like that seems like it would be much more sketchy with all that rope at your feet. That's how you get dragged in, gotta stay on your toes
