  • How can I makeover my leather shoes?
    If you're going to DIY, you need to try Tarrago Leather Dye. It comes in 56 natural colors (and 7 metallics) so nearly any color you can think of is an option. Best of all, everything you need is in the Tarrago box! It's super simple.
    In addition to the contents of the Tarrago Leather dye package, be sure to have gloves, frog tape, a sponge and a painter's brush on hand. The painter's brush is optional, but makes the process more precise.
    Tarrago Shoe Dyeing Process:
    1. Tape off the sole and any part of your shoe that you don't want dyed with frog tape or masking tape.
    2. Use the included preparer to take the factory finish off of your shoes. Simply soak a small piece of sponge (the scouring side of a Scotch-Brite sponge works great) in the preparer and rub in circles. The shoes will be matte when this is finished.
    3. Shake the paint until it's well mixed. The product often settles, so this is very important!
    4. Paint the details of your shoe with a painter's brush: seams, details, and the edges of the frog tape.
    5. With a paint brush, apply the paint to the sponge inclosed in the kit, then apply the paint to the shoe in a circular motion.
    6. In between coats, use a blow dryer to speed up the process.
    7. Repeat this until you have a solid color-- this will take about 5 coats. Be sure that the paint is dry in between coats!
    8. After the final coat you need to allow 4 to 24 hours before wearing.
    Now think of all the other things you could be painting. Paint your leather bag, giving it a makeover for this season's colors, or be more artistic. Grab a belt you never wear, paint it and belt a sweater for a brand new outfit. Touch up a pair of boots or even paint your dog's leather collar.

    As noticed you used a small artist brush, hope you don't mind me including another tip that if one wishes to do an area that requires even a smaller brush as for trim (piping) on a clutch purse that I wanted to change the color of -- a) recycle the brush that is used for nail polish (if its a clear nail polish often used as a base/top coat all the better as no risk of color bleeding) b) however (still) first clean the bristle part will nail polish remover, top off with dish detergent then thoroughly rinse. Voila you have a mini brush ideal for the purpose and works much better than a q-tip! ☺

    I used tarrago creme colored dye on some brown boots. Did everything right, but the dye didn't soak into the leather. It kinda goes on like paint. I put about 7 or more coats on them, but as soon as I started walking in them the dye started cracking everywhere that the boots would naturally bend so unfortunately it was a failed DIY project. Might work on flats though

      Just a wild guess, but did you let the boots THOROUGHLY dry between each coat? Just a thought.

      Oh 7 coats is WAY too much! Yes this product may be called 'dye' but it for sure is a paint. Only a paint would be able to cover dark colors. Dye can only be used on light color natural leather, and not on vinyl (most products you think are leather, are actually cheap plastic vinyl... even high-end designer purses, so beware what you are actual buying). Dye will permeate into the leather, while this product sits on the surface, and makes it possible to give you those lovely bright colors that dye simply cannot do. The paint is likely very similar to regular acrylic paint, but with a plastisizer so that it makes the paint more flexible and less prone to cracking with flex. But even so, put this stuff on heavy enough and it will for sure crack. I recommend you strip it off with a stripper (acetone or rubbing alchool) and sandpaper, and then cover it again, but only 1-2 coats max.

      You may as well use acrylic, I am guessing

    • @OliviaBeille
      @OliviaBeille 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +c6gav That's why it's called leather paint. It's not supposed to do that. But you have to prep the surface first.

  • @candicegejing
    @candicegejing 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video! I was curious how did you create such hard line between leather and sole? When I took off my painter's tape, the layer of leather paint also comes off and creates a very uneven edge. Will frog tape solve it?

    • @NefariousMew
      @NefariousMew 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      frog tape and painters tape are the same pretty much.. there is a bit of an art to using painters tape.. if you really slop on too much paint onto the tape and let it dry, it will make it very hard to remove the tape without pulling chips out of the the dry paint edge. Next time try thinner coats, or carefully take the tape off at the very end pf painting...before the paint drys. If you let it dry , then carefully/lightly go over the edge of the tape/seam edge with an knife (box cutter) to 'slice/cut' the paint from the edge so when you peel off the tape you get a clean edge (but this is harder because u might damage your shoe leather with the knife unless you are extra extra careful)

    • @candicegejing
      @candicegejing 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NefariousMew I think you are right. I used several layers of paint on my shoes and it was thick after it dried. I'll try thin layers next time. Thank you so much :)

    I plan to do this project on a pair an old pair of Dankso Professional Nurse Clogs. There is in the toe area peeling patent leather.
    How would I go about preparing the patent leather as well as repairing the peeling toe area? How does the paint react over set in creases across top of clog?
    Thank you in advance.

    • @mrsbenn1
      @mrsbenn1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Realize this is an old question BUT this dye is NOT suitable for patent leather. That stated though, you might be able to touch up the spots that have peeled but doubtfully the areas will have the same high gloss.

    This is not how you leather dye - this is just painting the shoe. the process is different and you are misleading the people. Change it painting - Even though the product stated it is a dye. @chistianRios - maybe that's why the color cracked - because you used paint instead of dye.

      I wouldn't. At least take them to a cobbler and have them advise you. If they day yes let them do it. Exotic leathers, especially reptilian, can be very tricky.
