@ @sospup Art is derivative. ‘Making it your own’ is a cop out. You couldn’t make your own art unless you first stole the idea from the guy that gave you influence. Did you ask artists permission before you took influence from their work? Nope. AI also takes inspiration just like artists do… it’s not just wholly taking an entire persons work and reposting it with zero changes is it..?
Music artists do this, they take influence from others and make a song ‘their own’ and you know what happens? They get sued. Everyone from Led Zeppelin to Eminem get sued because trashy artists want to pretend they made unique masterpieces despite the fact that they stole ideas from others… and yet they get angry when others do the exact same thing as they did
AI MUST have guardrails but you’re living in looney tune land if you don’t see the parallel here…. If people just claimed they were responsible for all the work AI did would you even outrage the same way?
If I took inspiration from the guy who came up with the original Charizard Pokémon and changed it to be smaller, two heads, all blue, different head, and lots of scales throughout the body… do you think I should get in trouble for theft? If I asked AI to deliver the exact same thing then what about now? More theft? Less theft? Do you think I made it “my own” with all the changes? Did I ask permission?
I partially don’t blame artists who try and sue. Get that bag. But it’s stupid af to make the argument you’re making as if humans aren’t doing exactly what AI is doing. At that point you’re just hating on the efficiency
Funny how you bring up my username. 90% of the time it gets brought up by idiots who are more triggered by what I say than by me saying something that is actually wrong. Usually right wing idiots 😂

Along the lines of what Jordan was saying, I think one of the biggest issues with AI is that its current public perception allows it to be scapegoated by corporations and powers-that-be to absolve them of responsibility. It seems like many people are more focused on the "intelligence" side and less on the "artificial" part. When AI gets treated like some all-knowing autonomous being, it's easier to point at it when something goes wrong and go "Look, it was the computer's fault!" and ignore the fact that those faults are entirely the product of human decisions and engineering. Who gets to decide when AI is deployed? And what data sets it gets fed?

  • @_Moe

Thank you guys for not tip-toeing around the Mormon issue. I'm exmormon and was raised in what exmormons sometimes call Morridor (the Mormon corridor) and I firmly believe it is a cult. I get real annoyed when creators act like the LDS church is just another religion with good and bad people in it, as if the very doctrine and leadership of the church isn't foundational to the toxic cult culture that surrounds it.

Good to see a fellow exmo among the Sad Boyz crowd! I'm also an ex-mormon from Bountiful, UT and I totally agree with you. More people familiar with the Mormon church need to call it out as a cult so that uninformed people don't get sucked in by missionaries. While there are good Mormon people, that doesn't change the fact that the church itself is a corrupt corporation that hoards wealth and power and hold immense control over people's minds.

Bryan Johnson’s situation just feels like a case study in why treating mental health as an important aspect of your health would benefit not only individuals but society as a whole.
From everything he’s done with his son to perpetuating this lifestyle as a means of dealing with mental health issues, it’s causing harm. It is imperative that we keep pushing for mental health to be openly discussed and effectively evaluated by healthcare professionals because he’s not the only one causing harm because of an inability to accept and understand their own emotions. If more issues were caught early on, if more people went to therapy even if they don’t have a mental illness and learned how to regulate, and how their actions affect others, if people were able to understand and be treated for whatever may be going on with less judgement, then we wouldn’t have a lot of the problems were currently facing. Obviously it wouldn’t solve everything, but mental health, hyper-individualism, and emotional instability are huge aspects of many societal problems.

I find it interesting that Brian Johnson, in his quest of trying not to age and die, is now dealing with this question of "How do I make myself healthy? What counts as metrics for being 'healthy'?" because now his experiments cover all sorts of things that society thinks what health is, when in fact most are probably just social constructs (e.g. having a lot of muscle, getting erection or not, etc.)

For lack of a better example I can compare it to the end of the Fairly Odd Parents intro that changes Vicky's head to something a little different each time it's that little bit of variation that keeps it a little fresh. What im saying is that i enjoy Jordan just improvising his intros

I actually am quite concerned about how AI is gonna be used in education, largely on the student end. Like we've all heard the complaint from maths students that "We have calculators, why would we ever need to learn this?"
Soon enough i think we're gonna approach a point where people are saying "Why should I write this short story/essay/analysis, AI can do it for me", ignoring the critical point that we're taught these things because they broaden the ways in which we think and help us in our personal and professional lives to construct things in a particular way. Same as maths, we're taught it because it teaches you patterns of thought that can be helpful in your day to day life, as well as important skills if you do pursue a career in that field.

oh, yeah, I fear that as well. I’ve gone back to uni for a second degree and everybody in my classes is about ten years younger than me. a lot of them use chatgpt for everything, from asking about stuff that you can easily google or look up in the lecture notes, to coming up with essay style answers for both group and individual projects, as well as to outsource their personal reflections. it’s… it’s something. 🫥

My brother was just in a literature course (UPPER level, too, like a 300s class, at a massive State University) and the professor took a poll by raise of hands to see who was against the use of AI in writing their essay assignments, and my brother was one of TWO people opposed to it, and I guess classes are just democracies now, because the majority rules there and the professor said it would be allowed. I would've thought this testimony was fake if it wasn't coming from my own brother. It's wild. I got my degree in 2017 so it's been a while since I was in a class or involved in academics, so it's wild for me to hear how much things have changed.

As a person with a Liberal Arts degree it's so confusing to me that things got like this so fast, but we should've seen the lack of full novels being assigned in lower level English classes as the canary in the coalmine. It all started with "No Fear Shakespeare" and Sparknotes. Should've absolutely never been allowed in academia.

We have so many ebooks and guidelines available to us as students, if I have a question I'll look it up any of the resources that my uni provides.
Case in point for hallucinations, there's an antibody called anti-CCP, a friend asked ChatGPT what the role of anti-CCP was in rheumatoid arthritis and ChatGPT said it was an antibody against the Chinese Communist Party :/

Jordan making a great point about the POV of corporations in the USA when he said they would rather you argue with an AI than argue with them.
This is, essentially, the same concept as customer service departments. With a small business or with traditional communication from the 20th century you could be wronged by someone and physically speak with a decision maker to argue or ask for restitution.
Companies don't like that. So it started with customer service reps/front desk people/etc. Then that evolved into teams and a manager, then an entire department, then email based "we will call you" forms, then they took phone numbers out of their website contact pages, now it's AI.
They are removing the layers of accountability between leadership and the customer and replacing them with walls. It's the same thing these mega corps want to do with their work force by contracting out services to other companies and only employing leadership positions directly.

Really good episode. Appreciated the bit about mentioning the differences in energy used by the competing AIs, especially with the increase of unprecedented climate emergencies. Also, the trigger / activation warnings were appreciated. And I mean in dealing with trauma there are healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms and the extremity of it matters too. It really does seem like like he dove into continuing to dehumanize himself after the abuse instead of choosing to humanize himself, which does take a tremendous amount of effort and time. Also, thank you for talking about the cult and the ex stuff involved. Also also...yeah Jordan is right. Pretending you don't have emotions or if you are getting abused and are not allowed to show your emotions can make you physically ill in various ways over time. Duration and intensity being large factors. As well as the amount of support you received during and after those times.

I wish mental health held more importance and less stigma in the lds church. As a member, its hard to see how people's identities become so wrapped up in the church that they don't have anything outside of it. I am grateful my parents tried to teach me about growing my identity and having church principles as an additional benefit to my life.
I wish more people in my church could see things in a broader perspective because agreeing with things blindly and not trying to understand the world outside of the church is what leads people to believe it is a cult. In truth, we are supposed to question if it is right and have faith to trust that everything will work out for our good, like any other Christian denomination. Joseph Smith's whole story is about questioning if it is right or not.
I always appreciate hearing peoples perspectives, especially since I love this podcast. I'm glad they talked about it because it is important, and more people should be aware of it in multiple religious settings.
(Please dont comment if you want to hate on my religion. I won't be responding to negative comments.)

One in accuracy, and it's nit picky but we don't go to church every day. The most I was going to church was as a youth and that was twice a week. And the midweek gathering was mostly fun.

1:19:26 talking as someone raised for 17 years in the mormon church: very much yes. it's such an enormous part of your life, literally your entire community, and you've been taught it's the only thing making you a good person, which is what makes leaving so difficult and leaves a HUGE hole when you do. I don't know if Brian also grew up in the church, but for the son at least, there's an insane level of indoctrination and psychological manipulation when you don't know anything but the church. and if he went straight from the church to his dad, then he probably sees those as the only two options

    • @kris.trepidation
      @kris.trepidation วันที่ผ่านมา

A lot of this stuff makes sense as a sort of overcorrection of church teachings. Being ok with his dad posting his erection data, well at least an adult in his life is acknowledging sexuality in any other context than porn addiction. And Brian's obsession with slowing his aging is very reflective of the emphasis the church puts on eternal life after death for you and your family.

The thing to point out about "they used open ai data" is 1. Open ai stole a lot of that data, or else these big companies just snuck it into user agreements and they took it. It was never their data.
And 2. Perhaps more importantly, open AI has their own data and they didn't make a model as efficient with that data. It's hard to say they stole from you when they made something better

around 14:00 talk about AI, i super disagree that it's helpful to learn how to solve math equations because it can explain that to you or whatever, because it just pulls that information from somewhere else online likley without the origional authors permission, theres examples of AI basically just lifting whole paragraphs with no credits given, not to mention that it lies all the time, and theres no way to know if its just making it up or not

    • @litecandle
      @litecandle วันที่ผ่านมา +5

I also disagree with using AI here. As a teacher, I'd much rather have my students come to me with a question like this because
      A) I can identify what specific misconception or missing skill they're dealing with and help them focus on that and
      B) If ten of my students all have that same question, I'd rather take a quick pause to talk about it with the whole class rather than soldiering on while some students are lost.
