The Chao Garden is a rabbit hole. It has nothing to do with anything in the actual game, and yet it has a extremely deep mechanical complexity, with DNA, genetics and all kinds of things.
Such a good game. No idea why they have that mini game about rushing through various levels. Chao Garden Adventure 2: Battle was already a masterpiece.

The Chao Garden was a feature linked to the VMU. Kids could play with their Chao much like the old Tamogachi. It leveled up your Chao, to then use in the mini games
Honestly, Sega could make a game just about raising and racing Chao and I would buy it.

I commend him for trying, it seems like an earnest attempt. I feel like he isn’t even obligated to force himself to like a game when it is frustrating or not-great. So the fact that he is trying to appease those people criticizing him is admirable.

My bet in on aquatic mine or one of the space levels. Arin isn't using the monitors for hints in the treasure hunting stages, thus making the stages infinity more hard than they need to be. also the treasure hunting and mech stages are just not great in this game lol.

I remember I used to be genuinely scared of Pumpkin Hill when I was a kid. The spooky faces on everything and the pumpkin mountains in the background scared me so much that I stopped playing the game for a while and had to psych myself up to go back and get through it.

Ohh same!! I loved the Chao Garden. Used to load the game sometimes to JUST play the Chao Garden.
So, uh, the prologue part WAS animated. Apparently somebody, either you or one of the interns or whatever, started the game and then exited (I'm guessing to test if the recording was working), so the game instead did a recap.
Ohhhh, I thought it was because they're playing the Dreamcast version. I thought it was really weird, thank you for clarifying!

I do feel kind of bad that Arin always has to sort of defend himself as a Sonic fan. While yes, he does have the reputation of shitting on the games all the time, he's made it a point to play damn near every Sonic game on this channel.

This game is the epitome of my childhood and I’m so glad they’re coming back to finish this.
Honestly I think it really holds up as a decent game. I will replay this game every 5-7 years and I still love it as an adult
I've collected every emblem in this game twice, once on the gamecube back in the day, and once on Steam. I have never once seen this text and narration at 3:20. I'm certain the only way you can see this is by starting a new game on the hero story, then quitting before completing city escape, then starting again. I have never done this.

I'm don't know what you used to set up your switch pro controller, but my logitech controller has a hardware toggle on it that will swap the function of the dpad and left analog. Maybe there's a similar toggle somewhere in the software you used.

Someone looked at Amy's line and not only thought "that black hedgehog" sounded perfectly fine, they went on to do Shadow the Hedgehog where just about everyone refers to the enemy forces as "those black creatures."
24:20 i'm not being a grump, apologist when I say this is something that everyone misses when playing through this level. Especially for their first time. The camera only pans back to show the enemy if you're standing within a specific spot, so it's not arin's fault

I don’t know if I’m just an anomaly among Sonic fans that can both enjoy the games AND acknowledge the genuine criticisms leveraged against it without feeling personally attacked. I like seeing Arin go ballistic at Sonic games the same way I like it when he’s genuinely enjoying himself. It’s not that serious 🤷♀️
@@gothicMCRgirl it's insane to see how sonic fans are now, it's like after their games just genuinely being bad for so long, now that they're actually playable they act like the hate for them was all some conspiracy against them. Like no bro, forces was bad, the werehog sections of unleashed weren't great even if the sonic sections were good, and even though it's my favourite game in the series I can admit colours was a bit shallow in terms of story and the storyline being a bit all style no substance.

And I grew up precisely around the same time that the Adventure games came out, so I’m part of that generation of Sonic fans that adore and are nostalgic for this era of Sonic. And even as a kid I remember being very put off by certain aspects of these games. These were fun but VERY flawed experiences. And that’s okay 🤷♀️

I love the chao garden, it's actually the first game that made me cry because I was so sad when I sent a chao away to get another.
I'm glad I'm not the only one, me and my brother both used the same chao garden and he would always act like he was sending away my chaos and I would get so upset. He played a prank on me when he unlocked the angel garden when I was away and put my chao in it and then convinced me he accidentally deleted him and I bawled my eyes out. Eventually he pretended that he "fixed it" and it really just "got sent to the good garden because it was a really good chao" lmao, the chao garden was SERIOUS BUSINESS

The thing about this game, that most people dont know, is that 90% of the control issues arent arent just nostalgiad away, its because the only port that uses the original dreamcast version as the base, is the Gamecube port, all the others are ports of ports, which is why they get progressively worse and worse in terms of control issues.

i was really hoping when they re-do this they'd do the gamecube version, because it's just worlds better. I know arin always wants the worst possible version because glitches are fun, but if you're already doing a second play-through, maybe do the good version.

God, I LOVE this game! I was born in '96, so a lot of the classic gamecube games are so nostalgic to me, and I definitely played this gem like 50 times over!

This version has a different opening to the version they played last time. The first one they played had an animated helicopter sequence, and sonic gets his snowboard from a part of the helicopter.
I think someone might have started the Hero Story because the picture with text and voice thing happens any time you continue a story in both Sonic Adventure 1 and 2
Yeah -- someone booted up the story (maybe just to test that the emulator was working properly, etc.) So this wasn't starting from scratch and it missed the opening cutscene.
There's a blurb/recap for every level, which plays if you start a save file in progress.
