    Mauler is correct in noticing that the in-universe Thrawn-wank in this show is extremely silly. _We_ think Thrawn is cool because he was a pragmatic genius mastermind that very nearly ended the New Republic, but that was in a story Disney very deliberately declared non-canon. The characters in the show treat him the same way _we_ do despite this version of Thrawn just being a somewhat-competent blue guy whose career was largely defined by being dabbed on in Rebels and abducted by space whales. Nobody explains exactly how they expect Thrawn will return them to glory, and we already know whatever they do doesnt work because the Sequel Trilogy happens after this.
    Also, hi Rags.

    • @TheNoonish
      @TheNoonish ปีที่แล้ว +55

      Also, that story gave Thrawn a lot of tools, he wasn't just fighting with rubber bands. He had a fleet of starships, he had an army of clones to help man his ships, and he found a lost fleet to bolster his numbers. He rallied the remnants of the Empire behind his leadership. He had a top secret bug relaying him information directly outside the Senate Floor. He had a band of legendary assassins answerable only to him. He discovered a force-resistant species of drop-bears.
      He wasn't magically a threat to the Republic simply by existing, he was a smart adversary who made use of many resources. He found innovative ways to use cloaking technology and gravity generators. He was tactically and strategically savvy, and an inspiring leader to his men.

    • @snakeguy8646
      @snakeguy8646 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@TheNoonishI mean even the novels with Thrawn that are canon are still good, they somewhat nerf him to where he isn’t as good as politics as he is commanding fleets. And since they expand on the Chiss Ascendancy, hypothetically he could have resources with a fleet of Chiss ships, which would be so fucking COOL seeing a hybrid Imperial Chiss fleet. But they won’t do that, they’re too stuck on hearing “oh, he’s a space Sun Tzu, ok and Sun Tzu is seen as a god of war I think, so that must mean Thrawn is just some god right?”

    • @TheNoonish
      @TheNoonish ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@snakeguy8646 They're trying to turn him into some kind of mythical figure. In the books, by the end of the series, he was legendary even in the republic for his tactical sense, like Rommel was to his adversaries. But Thrawn wasn't taken down in an epic face to face duel with a lightsaber, he was done in by a dude with a knife.
      This is a world-building problem. If they showed a universe where the Empire was very much still intact and actively fighting against the Republic, having Thrawn show up could swing the battle. But they're not fighting at all and acting as if simply having Thrawn be there will give them the power to fight, suddenly. If we had a sense that the Empire was in a long, losing war but it could be turned around by a competent commander, it would be a big deal.
      Our heroes shouldn't be hunting down Thrawn, they should be fighting the Empire. Their win condition isn't preventing Thrawn's return, it's destroying the Empire's ability to war war.

    • @snakeguy8646
      @snakeguy8646 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@TheNoonish Yeah this goes all the way to Jakku and Cinder as a world building problem, having the Empire kill itself and die quickly was just lazy, the EU turning it into a long war of attrition handled it way better, and if they kept it would have made it so much easier for Disney to make stories, now they just keep pulling shit out of their ass

    Finding Thrawn is like someone looking for Napoleon, but the British put the map to Alba in an Aztec temple with puzzles. The idea of someone who went into exile fairly recently and having it portrayed like it's some sort of ancient quest is B.S. This is the Wayfinder dagger rubbish.

    • @CrustlessKing

      The only way I see to square this circle is to conjecture that the second galaxy depicted in the map must be the only other one to which the space whales were known to be able to travel (though that doesn't exclude the possibility of others), and that knowledge of this map's existence and what this map is supposed to depict and this map's secured location was all preserved, but not the actual contents of the map itself. Therefore the map was not created explicitly to provide the purported location of Thrawn and Ezra, it was made to provide the location of another now-forgotten galaxy which is merely one potential (incredibly expansive) location that the space whales may have taken them. I still don't think this slots into what the show tells us but I don't think there's any other way to justify the characters seeking out this ancient map and coming to these conclusions.

    I genuinely cannot understand why people would like this version of Sabine. In two episodes, she ditched a celebration of the heroes of the city, threatened the life of a pilot by speeding into his ship before dipping last minute, stole confidential information that a JEDI wasn't able to notice/sense, and casually attempted hacking essentially a bomb in a hospital.
    Also, remember when Finn, a non-force user, fought Kylo, a sith who has trained for years, and got his shoulder knicked and his back slashed. Those two wounds caused Finn to lose consciousness and had to be put in a whole ass bacta suit or whatever. Meanwhile, Sabine gets straight up stabbed in the liver, lung, etc. and she is bouncing up and down on the bed, walking around like nothing is wrong. No. I'm just remembering Clay Morrow from Sons of Anarchy who got shot in the chest and he required an oxygen tank, had a raggedy voice, and was wheezing for a whole season and a half.

      If I was gonna rewrite the show, I'd have it where Sabine is off supporting some time-sensitive mission to help some people (hostage situation, natural disaster, etc.), and have it brought up that Sabine didn't need to go to that mission, and it's clear she's just disrespecting the governor who set up the celebration; but the oldman who knows her clarifies it -- "her absence is not for lack of care; she's burying her sorrow in her work".
      Have it justified that it was an emergency that she threw herself into to help out with, anything to find something else to think about, to keep busy. But still acknowledge that it was an evasive behavior that was disrespectful whether she intended it or not.

      You could obviously have her do this without her being an asshole-show her having an emotion over it. They mentioned she was at the memorial earlier, you could show her looking at the mural, getting teary-eyed, and then dashing off. Then she could be a decent person and APOLOGIZE about how she couldn't handle being there because there's a loss she can't bear.
      Instead you show her blasting star-wars techno on her motorcycle and coyly saying, "Oh, that was today?" after she was said to be AT the memorial, and then fleeing people who wanted her there. Why? I can only assume it's to make it impossible for the audience to sympathize with her.

Even if this explosion wasn’t nuclear, our female protagonists willingly risking everyone in the hospital and in a city was BARBARIC! And Hera, a military general told them to “Go for it”?

    We always get the same thing with Dave Filioni when he scratches the surface of good world building. The Empire quest giver talking about all the benefits the Empire gives, the old separatist guy actively supporting democracy. And now we are asked how a entire workforce of lower class workers slaving away in a random shipyard could possibly have any loyalty remaining for the Empire and the only answer we can be given is "Greed." There is so much more to explore here in question to the loyalty of everyday citizens of the galaxy.

    You're right, MauLer, Thrawn became popular because he was a competent, interesting antagonist well-presented in the books that introduced him. The funny part is, there's a later duology of books that's based around the memetic status he subsequently gained in-universe, and the problems inherent in that. The overblown "Thrawn will return!" hype is an *in universe* plot point, causing both Imperial remnants and excitable New Republicans to act in certain arguably counterproductive ways. So not only was Thrawn a good character but the books even played with the unrealistic hyping of him as a significant flaw of other characters... Disney didn't take notes...

      I mean, if their plan was just to incapacitae Sabine, they could have taken some inspiration from prequel clone wars where Dooku just gave the heroes flesh wounds (and a chopped off limb) where the shock caused by the pain would make them stay down for a while and require medical assistence, rather than straight up gut the character in a VERY vital area and cover it in plot armor so that it survives the whole trip to the hospital to be maybe saved.....I mean, she clearly lived in a very isolate place that took a fucking while to reach even by ship, yet she survived something that ended Qui-gon in seconds for long enough so that Ashoka could arrive, drag her sorry ass to the ship and still take quite some time on the travel back before reaching an hospital, where she would still need to be taken to a doctor in god knows what floor to then start the procedure of healing whatever was damaged.
      And the worse thing is that an shit-eater Disney star wars fan will just come out with some silly what-aboutism pointing to other sure death instances where characters survived (as if we didn´t think they were shit as well) and that those should give a free pass for this one as well, rather than acnowledge it was shitty writing.

    In the BOOKS, Thrawn actually was just cool for cools sake. His backstory was that he was the only person in the Empire who was allowed to veto the Emperor on matters of military strategy. (He was the only person who disagreed with the viability of a planetary invasion plan the Emperor had proposed, and when the invasion failed the Emperor decided he would listen to Thrawn in the future.) But he earned his coolness beyond his backstory because of the character he was shown to be. He believed in the cause of the Empire, he fought to achieve his goals, he acted as a foil to the heroes, and his defeat was a consequence of his actions. He had personality, and quirks, and gravitas. He was a good character, he was a good villain. Rebels was a pale imitation, and everyone still clinging to hope in this franchise is just waiting for him to be introduced in some post credit scene level cameo in this garbage show so he can be a terribly written character in a movie that likely won't even get made? 13:00 Yes, fans of the original EU liked Thrawn because he was what Hux was supposed to be: A young, clever, highly skilled Admiral. He presented a really good counter to the Emporer/Vader explicitly because he WASN'T a Sith, yet he could still organize the Imperial Remnant into a formidable galactic force. He also was building a different kind of Empire, likely because he ended up in charge of the Imperial Remnant, which (in a lot of ways) operated like it's own version of the Rebellion. He was driven not by an all consuming desire for power and have his race rule the Galaxy, instead he was very much about the stability and capability the Empire brought.
    Don't get me wrong, still very much a villain, but he was interesting because he came across like the guy who was always 3 steps ahead of the heroes because he could think like them, plan like them, and was willing to break Imperial Doctrine when it became inconvenient.
    The original Thrawn is exactly the kind of villain new Star Wars could galvanize around. Like a Thanos, he could be a persistent and formidable threat. I am very concerned the direction they are going making him into a mythical figure.

    Fringy REALLY nails this show's inability to be rewatched. These videos are essentially my rewatches. I've watched/stolen episode 1-5 so far. Rewatching episode 1 was a miserable f**king experience. It was slow and aimless. Knowing what happens removes any mystery and intrigue so I'm just waiting for these hollow characters to get on with it. Usually shows solve this problem by having characters change and constantly react to the world around them. But they don't. This is the most transparently lazy of all of these shows. This show is not writing anything new, just speaking to what's been seen before. This will prove more true as we progress.

    The worldbuilding of the post-Empire government is dealt yet another blow.
    “We just assumed all these former Empire people would be fine with us. We didn’t vet or screen them at all.”
    Practically no care is taken by the New Republic in a major post-war industry of repurposing colossal pieces of sophisticated equipment on the scale of at least one immense shipyard. In a project highly vulnerable to misuse or sabotage, the Republic was happy to maintain not only the same staff, but the same organisational structure free of direction or even surveillance. There is nothing, I repeat nothing, stopping or even detecting a single Imperial-sympathetic engineer from sabotaging something like an engine to explode and destroy the Republic ship it's put in, or a bribed manager smuggling out rare weapon components to terrorists. Even basic common theft of material, devoid of ideology, would be a big concern of this kind of project, yet the negligence reaches such heights that something as rare and powerful as a SUPER STAR DESTROYER HYPERDRIVE could've been whisked away never to be seen again.
    For a moment we dared entertain the idea that they'd deal honestly with people who didn't have the luxury of caring whether the Empire or Republic ran things, until a room of random console workers were so radical and so devoted that they were willing to die to assassinate a General and a Jedi. A hint of maturity thrown away in the most spectacular fashion.

    Notes for episode 2
    I love that they tell you that the story is nuanced and not everyone picks a side, but then it turns out these random factory works (who really have no reason to be super loyal to either side) are willing to die for the Empire that’s already lost control. Not only does that make the story less interesting, but it also makes no sense. Why? Why are they so loyal? Did they have a better payment plan under the Empire or something? And all of them? No ones here to just make a living?
    Ahsoka disarms one of the workers, and then Hera just shoots them in the chest point blank when they’re defenseless. Again, why? Why choreograph them to do something that’s morally questionable (at best) if it’s never addressed and doesn’t mean anything for the character? Like Obi-Wan using someone as a human shield, it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth and doesn’t mean anything for the story or characters.

    I know this is all un-canonized lore at this point BUT there were something like a dozen total SSDs in service at the height of the Empire before the battle of Endor.
    After the Emperor's death, there were only a handful left and each represented a major Imperial hero's position/claim to rule. A SSD was a rallying point for regional imperial forces and served to unite those forces around a central figure (interestingly, Thrawn was never given charge of an SSD).
    All that said--looking out a window and seeing an SSD specific hyperdrive unit which Hera does not recognize any purpose for (which is stupid given she literally commanded a Starwhawk in canon lore so should absolutely have good cause to believe there may well be secret, super ships under construction which are built on the parts of old imperial ships) but given that we accept okay, sure, Hera forgot about that and doesn't know why this SSD hyperdrive is here--that should be profoundly alarming. Call in the cavalry, this whole yard is on lock down kind of alarming because that engine can (again, if we buy that Hera is indeed correct and it's not for a Starhawk or similar republic ship) only be for one of like, six vessels and each of those are a huge, huge problem.
    Then when we find out, yes, this is indeed a secret imperial shipyard, this should be a major focus of New Republic resources given the seriousness of what that ship part means. A fleet should be dispatched to handle this.

      There only being a dozen total Executor's is new canon shit, not old, lul. Old canon-wise, Super Star Destroyers (which, at least in the old canon, also had a far broader definition, of literally just being 'anything bigger and more powerful than an Imperial-class') were sector-level fleet assets. So, I.E., many, many thousands. Of course, how many of those were 'just' smaller battlecruiser-level ships and how many were geniune Star Dreadnoughts like Executor's is unknown, but I would lean towards the latter being more common, frankly.

    In Rebels, the Grand Inquisitior almost never uses the spinny function on his saber.
    And I'm convinced Disney accidentally made a GREAT point with how it's used- Grand Inq uses it specifically when he's stressed, cornered, and losing, as a cheap tactic to mimic talented sword swinging.
    Now, Grand Inq actually dies due to Kanan exploiting the weakness of the circular bit being exposed.
    The inferior inquisitors use the spinny bits way more and actually seem to believe it is a good strategy.
    They could make a HUGE point in the live action shows to enforce the idea the Inquisitors are mass-trained and are barely qualified, but Dave seems to have wrapped around to convincing himself it's actually cool and not a cheap trick.

      Right?! It made sense that the New Republic would largely just be an ‘exchange of Keys”, With Former Imperial Worlds and Ships simply experiencing a Change in Leadership. There are countless examples in History where Military Hardware and Weapons and Even full Armies of defeated Nations were simply reallocated to other units and countries. There were thousands of Post War German Planes, Tanks, Trucks, Ships and other equipment being given to other countries after the war. Slap a New Coat of Paint on a German Panzer, and suddenly it is a French Panzer.
      Imperial Star Destroyers are the Epitome of Naval Superiority in the galaxy. Sure They were Expensive, Big and required a large crew to operate, but that is because they were designed to fulfill an Expansive role. They were Mobile Fortresses, with weapons, barracks, factories, training facilities, ground vehicles, 70+ Tie Fighters, and all the equipment necessary to maintain them.
      They were Top of the Line Warships, which represented a MASSIVE strategic advantage to whomever commanded them. The New Republic’s insistence on Demilitarization is just abject suicide..
      But then again, this is Disnusfilm War Stars, so these ships are probably made of balsa wood and their cannons are really just glow stick launchers intended for show.

    Ahsoka feels like they’re trying to make your 14 year old written fanfiction into live action having so much scenes that has so much meaning to the character but the audience just looks on like “ok”

    Yeah, he was a great character. The best in the film. He had a really good story and I still remembered him watching the episode of Andor with his type of droid.

      Evil but dedicated and courageous it would seem, they would have known they didn't stand a chance against a Jedi at close quarters, but still tried to protect the Empire. Hell, if these were just ordinary factory overseer staff, they've probably never been off world and all they know is that the Jedi were insane terrorists who tried to overthrow the Republic and murder its leaders in the middle of a war!

    "Sorry, it is classified."
    "But it can't be classified to me, I'm special."
    "Sure, you're awesome, but I'm not the guy who can unlock it."
    "Ah yeah, but I'm telling you to open it."
    "I understand you are telling me to open it, but I literally can't."
    "No, you don't seem to get just how special I really am."
    "Yeah, I get it. But this is like a locked box and I don't have a key to it, I'm just a little stooge."
    "But I'm AUTHORISING YOU to not be a stooge..."
    "Oh sweet jesus, she's broken, PLEASE SOMEONE START AN ACTION SEQUENCE"

    Ahsoka's tentacles also look really bad. They have creases in them and they also are really stiff and will flop around really weirdly.
