Please check out the band Garbage with lead singer Shirley Mandson. “I think I’m paranoid”,”only happy when it Rains”and “stupid Girl” are all great songs!
Another fun fact for you about Veruca Salt: The middle section of "Volcano Girls" where they break it down for a minute is (1) a callback to their first big hit, "Seether," and (2) also a reference to the Beatles. After the Beatles released "I Am The Walrus," there was a lot of questions and debate among the public about which one of them was "the walrus." In the song "Glass Onion" from the Beatles' White Album, John sings: "I told you about the walrus and me, man You know that we're as close as can be, man Well, here's another clue for you all The walrus was Paul" In that middle bit of "Volcano Girls," Nina sings: "I told you about the Seether before You know the one that's neither or nor Well, here's another clue, if you please The seether's Louise" Louise, btw, was the dark-haired one playing guitar (whose power-pose during the solo you admired). On that last line, you saw her put her hands up and smile like, "Yep, that's me." Also, Veruca Salt named their album "Eight Arms To Hold You" which is a reference to the original title of the Beatles' movie, "Help!" So, I don't know who all Veruca Salt was influenced by, but the Beatles are definitely on that list.

The drummer in the song is actually Jim Shapiro, Nina's (the lead singer on this one) brother, who left the band after completing the album. He's a great drummer. The drummer in the video is Stacy Jones, who is also fantastic, and the drummer for Letters To Cleo, and the lead singer/guitarist for the band American Hi-Fi, who had a big hit with "Flavor of the Weak".
I am so glad you finally discovered Veruca Salt! I had listened to them since the 90s and they are just one of the best bands around. They had a dynamic debut album in American Thighs but broke up a few albums later. They got back together a few years ago and I love their new stuff too.

Talking 90s rock, I 've suggested them before a few times and I'll do it again. You need to check out Shirley Manson, lead singer of the grunge rock band Garbage. This lady is so badass they cast her in a Terminator TV series as a Terminator! recommend "I'm Only Happy when it Rains" or "Push It"(That's NOT a salt n pepa cover).
Veruca Salt is the one with the egg or the nut problem depending on the version you watch/read. Violet Beauregard becomes the blueberry, easy to remember. "Violet! Your Violet!"
Veruca Salt was a great 90s band. I think their song Seether was their biggest hit. Fun fact, the Foo Fighters song Everlong, is written about Louise, the brunette in this band. I believe she and Dave were dating at the time. In return, she wrote the Veruca Salt song "Resolver" about Dave.
The time ai saw them, they hadjust picked up their new bass player which ended up being this iconic lineup. She had the flu and was miserable and yet she totally rocked out. That tells you everything you need to know about the show must go on in that kind of level of environment.
Hell yes, finally some Veruca Salt! Other songs of theirs to check out are “All Hail Me” and “Seether.” For more good female 90’s bands I’d go with Elastica, Portishead, and Garbage.
Belly is another female lead (Tanya Donelly) 90s alt-indie band with an amazing female bass player (Gail Greenwood). Songs that Jay might like from their 1993 album "Star" are "Feed the Tree", "Gepetto" and "Slow Dog". I think there are 2 videos for Gepetto, look for the one with Gail. From the second album try "Now They'll Sleep", "Super-connected" and "Seal my Fate". Thanks.
Guys, I don't think you've done any Garbage. Suggestions: Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, Vow, I Think I'm Paranoid, Special, Push It. They're their most widely known songs. Seriously good band.
As 60 year old dude from Lawrence Kansas man, I am just tickled that you guys ran across this. The bottleneck was or still is actually kind of a small place but maybe the crowd capacity is supposed to be like in excess of 500 people and the fire marshal wouldn't like it but it often went up to 700 what's your account for everybody letting people in the back door and just coming into this hot crowded space. I was mostly familiar with them from College radio on our local College radio station kjhk 90.7 FM and at one international awards for one of the great College stations because we had such a vibrant music scene. But anyway I'm so glad you guys reacted to this and I'm just trying to paint a picture of one random person experiencing them on a local tour back when you drove from town to town in a van that would often break down and just playing for your next gas money and maybe the record label through you a little money but mostly they fell short on their side of the deal usually. When you're in your twenties and doing that stuff it's all so real.
FINALLY! Thank you for reacting to this. LOVE THIS BAND. LOVE THIS SONG. These 90's chics ROCK. Check out the song "Seether". Still one of the most bad ass groups around. Been pushing for this for a long, long time and I said it...Jay will love this!! Nina & Louis are crazy and so nuts back in the day. Louise is the "SEETHER
This was my favorite band for a decade. Eight Arms to Hold You stayed in my truck's CD player for over a year. Another great one from them is Shutterbug.
Got to see them live in Tampa back in March of 1997. A group of us that were going to the concert decided to get a hotel downtown close enough to the venue that we could just walk to the concert and then hang out later that night and not have to worry about driving. Funny thing is that it turned out the band was staying in the same hotel as we were and a couple of my friends ran into them in the elevator and even got some autographs if memory serves right. Was a great show as well...loud as hell! They were opening for Bush who were early on with the Razorblade Suitcase tour.
The Breeders "Cannonball" was another badass 90's female led anthem that had heavy radio rotation at the same time as this song, you should check it out!
Please try Billy Vera - At This Moment! Bass, sax, story, vocals, it's got it all. Most of the team will remember it as the song from Family Ties, when Alex got dumped.
LOOOOOVE At This Moment!!! Absolutely devastating Family Ties scene, but even though Alex and Ellen broke up, Michael J Fox and Tracy Pollan are still together ❤️
yeah guys!!!! i requested this last week!!! im so pleased! omg. so if you loved this, now you have to go on and react to The Distillers "The hunger" live at reading (that version is amazing). Brody dalle is a power singer from the 90s too
You want to hit on more 90's rocky type of music with female leads? At some point you have to listen to Garbage. They have a lot great songs. They have both Rock and Trippy songs. The trippy songs are more like, "Milk", "Queer", and "#1 Crush". THey rock quite a bit as well. "Stupid Girl" is rock with some industrial influence sounds as well. "Vow", "I'm Only Happy When It Rains", "Special", "I Think I'm Paranoid", "Why Do You Love Me".. They some more upbeat sort of poppy songs as well Like, "When I grow Up", "Cherry Lips", and "Androgyny". Then they also have a different sound from songs like, "Bleed Like Me". They were also on a James Bond title song with, "The World Is Not Enough" which is good as well. I'm sure I may have missed a few to put in there as well.
Nina & Louise each sing lead. If you want to hear Louise from the same album, check out "Shutterbug." For other great 90's female artists, check out Juliana Hatfield's "Universal Heartbeat," Liz Phair's "Stratford On Guy," or The Sundays "Summertime." I'll also suggest Tegan & Sara's "Call it Off," but that's from the early 2000's.
This was from 1997, the 2nd Veruca Salt album 'Eight arms to hold you'... produced by Bob Rock, the guy who worked on Metallica's 1991 'black' album and Motley Crue's 1989 album 'Dr. Feelgood'... Seether was from Chicago (Same as Smashing Pumpkins) and were part of the 90's American grunge rock scene when they debuted in 1994 w/ the album 'American thighs'... and scored a gold selling record w/ the single 'Seether' a hit on MTV... Seether featured 2 women on guitar & vocals - Louise Post (the brunette) and Nina Gordon (the blonde who sang lead on 'Volcano Girls') w/ Steve Lack (bass) and Jim Shapiro (drums)... Louise Post was also then girlfriend of Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/ Nirvana) and she inspired the Foo Fighters song 'Everlong'... Veruca Salt had high hopes for 'Eight arms to hold you'... Bigger budget, bigger label, more glam... but the record undersold in 1997 as the alternative rock era was winding down. Hoping to write a 3rd album in 1999, everything fell apart... Louise Post and Dave Grohl had broken up... Nina Gordon left the band and ended up releasing a pop-oriented solo album in 2000 - 'Tonight and the rest of my life'... Veruca Salt was dropped by the label. Louise Post put a new version of Veruca Salt together in 2000... but the band 3rd album 'Resolver' in 2000 sold poorly... 4th album 'IV' in 2006 was completely ignored and Veruca Salt fell into obscurity. In 2014, Veruca Salt reunited the original band... Post and Gordon patched up their differences and started touring again and recorded the album 'Ghost notes' in 2015. However, the status of Veruca Salt is uncertain today... Louise Post released her solo album 'Sleepwalker' in 2023 and announced a solo tour.
I was in college when this got big, and many a time a friend would say something to the effect of "women can play rock, but not hard rock or heavy metal." So in response I'd play either Veruca Salt or L7 and say just because all of them don't doesn't mean they aren't capable. Other Veruca songs to check out are Seether, All Hail Me, Shutterbug, Don't Make Me Prove It, Awesome, & The Morning Sad. But especially on their album Eight Arms to Hold You, you can't really find a bad song. I saw someone else in the comments say to check out Here & Now by Letters To Cleo, another good one. If you wanna try something a bit harder, try Pretend We're Dead by L7.
Leave me, Lying here Cause I don't want to go (3x) Tell me, tell me what you really want from me You've got to let me know I'm falling off and I need you terribly One down and one to go Volcano Girls we really can't be beat Warm us up and watch us blow But now and then we fail and we admit defeat We're falling off We are watered down and fully grown Leave me, lying here cause I don't want to go (2x) A million miles of running and I hit the wall I bounce back and run some more But this is it I'm giving up I'm calling quits So get down and meet me on the floor Way to go way to flip off everyone I steal your thunder then I try to bolt But I could stand a little pity now and then I'm falling off I am watered down and fully grown Go I don't wanna go I don't wanna go I don't wanna go I don't wanna go I told you about the seether before You know the one that's neither or nor Well here's another clue if you please The seether's Louise... 1, 2, 3, wow Leave me lying here Cause I don't wanna go (3x) Leave me, leave me, leave me Go I don't wanna go I don't wanna go I don't wanna go I don't wanna go
Glad you got to this. Veruca Salt was the demanding English Girl in red that wanted everything NOW! She tries to get a goose that layed the golden eggs, but she was rejected as a bad egg.
Their album “American Thighs” is a reference to AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long.” The drummer was the singer’s brother and he learned to play by listening to Zep/Bonham. Seether was their first hit. They have some strong songs. All Hail Me is a great song as well.
You can totally hear the John Bonham influence in how hard he hits those drums. Also, just to be clear, he didn't play the drums until he joined the band. He played other instruments but they needed a drummer. So he took on the drums because they asked him to do it.
I've been sending you requests for this song for close to a year. I don't know if my emails made a difference, but glad you finally got to it. Their only other big hit was "Seether" which they even mention in this song. Now PLEASE do "Down By the Water" by PJ Harvey!!! I've been asking forever. It's so cool, weird and sexy all at the same time.
As a PJ Harvey fan, I think I would choose a different song from that album. "Send His Love to Me", or anything from "Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea." I haven't really gotten into anything after the "Uh Huh Her" album, but lots of great stuff up to that point.
Violet was the one who turned into a berry. I only know because of the line from the original movie "Violet you are becoming violet". Veruca is the one who loves candy.
As one said previously, Veruca Salt was the spoiled child from Willie Wonka and the CF. (Her character was named after verucas, a viral condition caused by HPV). Many years ago I was a detention teacher, I would send a list each morning of students in detention that day. I would often add the names Veruca Salt, Augustus Gloop, Charlie Bucket and others to the list to see who would catch the reference.
Just reminded me of The Veronica’s I can’t stay away is a personal fav but untouched is I think their most popular song a good addition to your female Fridays list😎🍻✌️🖖Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄🎁
Ok now I'm totally making my 90s female artist recommendations. I definitely suggest the song "Seether" by Veruca Salt. I also recommend the band L7 and the song "Pretend We're Dead." I also think you guys would love the band Garbage and the song "Stupid Girl." And lastly, I'd recommend PJ Harvey and the song "Rid of Me."
Hey Guys.. 90's ladies had their own LOLLAPALOOZA like music festival called The Lilith Fair. Google that and then take your pick of the performers. Check out Joan Osborne first tho , she has one of the most amazing voices. . 'Right hand Man" by Joan Osborne is fire!
Now you need to hear Veruca Salt's songs, "Seether," "All Hail Me," "Number One Blind," "Shutterbug," "Shimmer Like a Girl," "Museum of Broken Relationships," ""Laughing in the Sugar Bowl," "Eyes on You" and "Empty Bottle." A GREAT band that doesn't always get their due!! And Louise Post from Veruca Salt sang backup on the Foo Fighters' "Everlong."
Love Veruca Salt, I always thought they were underrated. My boy Stacy on the drums!!! Miss playing golf with that guy. He also drummed for Letters to Cleo, Miley Cyrus, and Matchbox 20. He is also the frontman of his own band American Hi-Fi.
I never opened for them in my local venue that I played a lot at but this place had bands like REM and U2 and Soundgarden and just endless, and this is one of them. So glad you guys are branching out into this stuff. Check out Iggy Pop Lust For Life or, the passenger.
I saw then once back in the day , 1994, when the opened for Hole(Courtney Love's band) They were great and Hole was awesome when she finally decided to come on stage at 12:30. The show started at 8.
My favorite song by Veruca Salt is probably "Number One Blind", which borrows a line from a Pixies song. As others have mentioned, "Seether" is great as well. This song and album have Beatles references.
What a great song and band. It was good song to get introduced to his band. A couple other good songs to check out are 1) Seether and 2) All Hail Me. Enjoy the great music and the holidays!!
Great band! Got to meet them (and Louise's Dad before the show) when they were at their peak. Some trivia items: the drummer (Stacy Jones) also played for Letters to Cleo, another great female-fronted band from this era. And Nina Gordon has a cover of Straight Outta Compton...
Please check out the band Garbage with lead singer Shirley Mandson. “I think I’m paranoid”,”only happy when it Rains”and “stupid Girl” are all great songs!

"Volcano girls" reached #8 on the same chart as well.. Both great
The BEST alternative rock band EVER !!!!! Period . All their albums are exceptional, timeless and sooo cool
Check out The Breeders "Cannonball" or "Divine Hammer." They were a 90's group.
SOOOO many great songs on this album: "Awesome", "One Last Time", "Shudderbug"
The time ai saw them, they hadjust picked up their new bass player which ended up being this iconic lineup. She had the flu and was miserable and yet she totally rocked out. That tells you everything you need to know about the show must go on in that kind of level of environment.
Hell yes, finally some Veruca Salt! Other songs of theirs to check out are “All Hail Me” and “Seether.” For more good female 90’s bands I’d go with Elastica, Portishead, and Garbage.
You definitely have to check out "Seether" by them. 😎
Thanks.
As a long time fan (fave band of all time) this made me so happy.
YES!!! Such a jam. I remember finding this song from Jawbreaker (1999) a good 10 years back now and immediately becoming obsessed with it 🙌🏼❤️🔥🎵
Another FAMOUS 1990’s female rock artist who is British, you need to do is PJ HARVEY. Please react to Down By The Water.
Rid Of Me is awesome as well.
I remember getting ready for my first day of high school with their album Eight Arms To Hold You playing
Great reaction. Another great 90’s song would be “#1 Crush” by Garbage .
That's my jam
Got to see them live in Tampa back in March of 1997. A group of us that were going to the concert decided to get a hotel downtown close enough to the venue that we could just walk to the concert and then hang out later that night and not have to worry about driving. Funny thing is that it turned out the band was staying in the same hotel as we were and a couple of my friends ran into them in the elevator and even got some autographs if memory serves right. Was a great show as well...loud as hell! They were opening for Bush who were early on with the Razorblade Suitcase tour.
One of my all time favorite bands. Just fantastic ..and an iconic video.
Played the absolute s**t out of this CD back in the day. Had fairly good bass too. Loneliness Is Worse is my fav.
I remember tape recording that song off the TV from that episode!
I pushed for this one quite a bit ...I knew you'd like it!
They were one of my favorite alternative rock groups. Liz Phair was also good (her 1st album)
Has RSR done Liz Phair, yet?
@@richarddennis4785no
Luscious Jackson is a great 90s female band
yeah guys!!!! i requested this last week!!! im so pleased! omg. so if you loved this, now you have to go on and react to The Distillers "The hunger" live at reading (that version is amazing). Brody dalle is a power singer from the 90s too
I've been requesting them to dor Veruca Salt for like years lol I'm so happy they finally got to it.
So glad you picked this band and this song!!! One of my favorite 90’s rock songs to put on when I have to get out of bed and get ready.
90s. WARRA DECADE FOR MUSIC!!’
I’ve always loved this one-“Seether” is another good one.
Try Garbage (Shirley Manson) and “Only Happy When it Rains” next Friday, PLEASE!!
If you do Veruca Sat again, please listen to “Seether”. Another good one.
Seether Glastonbury 95
Hard asf!! I liked this song ever since I heard this in the beginning of the movie "Jawbreaker". ❤❤❤❤
This is one of my favorite 90’s tunes
So many great bands.
Hex Ex
L7
Babes In Toyland
Shonen Knife
Magnapop
...
Leave me, Lying here
Cause I don't want to go (3x)
Tell me, tell me what you really want from me
You've got to let me know
I'm falling off and I need you terribly
One down and one to go
Volcano Girls we really can't be beat
Warm us up and watch us blow
But now and then we fail and we admit defeat
We're falling off
We are watered down and fully grown
Leave me, lying here
cause I don't want to go (2x)
A million miles of running and I hit the wall
I bounce back and run some more
But this is it I'm giving up I'm calling quits
So get down and meet me on the floor
Way to go way to flip off everyone
I steal your thunder then I try to bolt
But I could stand a little pity now and then
I'm falling off
I am watered down and fully grown
Go I don't wanna go
I don't wanna go
I don't wanna go
I don't wanna go
I told you about the seether before
You know the one that's neither or nor
Well here's another clue if you please
The seether's Louise...
1, 2, 3, wow
Leave me lying here
Cause I don't wanna go (3x)
Leave me, leave me, leave me
Go I don't wanna go
I don't wanna go
I don't wanna go
I don't wanna go
You have to check out Shirley Manson and Garbage.
Love this song. Memories.
Merry Christmas EVERYONE.
Glad you got to this. Veruca Salt was the demanding English Girl in red that wanted everything NOW! She tries to get a goose that layed the golden eggs, but she was rejected as a bad egg.
They were my first concert in 1995! I was 11 and thought they were *so* cool
@@kurtpflegl9724 thanks. I did leave that tidbit out.
Also, another good female fronted band from the 90s is Letters to Cleo. Check out there song Here and Now.
Here's another singer I learned about when I first found out about Volcano Girls. Try Meredith Brooks the song was Bitch.
These gals set my ears on FIRE, back in the day.
Down By The Water has a super cool vibe.
Violet was the one who turned into a berry. I only know because of the line from the original movie "Violet you are becoming violet". Veruca is the one who loves candy.
This is from verruca salts second album. Their first album is incredible. Every single song on it is great.
Love the "Looking Through A Glass Onion" Beatles nod!
I miss the 90's.
Never heard before, but I like it! Hard Rockin' and a Hard-Working Drummer! Great Choice, You Guys! :)
Veruca Salt released a reunion album in 2015 called Ghost Notes that picks up right where they left off in 1997. It seriously rocks.
L7 is another 90s girls rock band.
I've been into this band since their first single and still listen to them today. Love it!
Such a superb band - great choice
Hey Guys.. 90's ladies had their own LOLLAPALOOZA like music festival called The Lilith Fair. Google that and then take your pick of the performers. Check out Joan Osborne first tho , she has one of the most amazing voices. .
'Right hand Man" by Joan Osborne is fire!
Start with the Lilith Fair creator, Sarah McLachlin. RSR did one song. Sarah demands much more!
This took me back to middle school dances and our attempts to create a mosh pit 😂
I have been begging you to check out this group and this song for over a year. Thank you for getting them on, next up should be Geppetto from Belly.
You should listen to Seether. It's their biggest hit
FINALLY, welcome to the female alternative rock/grunge movement of the 90s! Next… Garbage! Maybe “I Think I’m Paranoid” to start.
Love Veruca Salt! Hope you do more reactions by them.
Check out their song Straight, from this album and also the song Seether. It's a real treat how hard these women rock.
