52. Testing the UV Resistance of 7 Resins

  • I’ve been really wanting to find out how UV resistant resin is. Of course, it’s going to vary from brand to brand, so I chose seven resins that I either use or are popular. All bottles were purchased with my own money within 30 days of mixing.
    This test uses Art Resin, Let’s Resin, Naked Fusion, Resin Rockers, MAS Art Pro, Extreme Resin, and Unicone. I did NOT apply any heat to them after pouring, so you’ll see bubbles and imperfections in the coasters. This was NOT intended to be a test of anything other than UV resistance, so I wasn’t taking any steps to prevent bubbles.

    This was exceptionally well done. I super appreciate it. I feel like it is very hard to get an honest review nowadays. We all watch some incredible crafters, but they are all promoting their friends products, ( super awesome to support small businesses) or products that may be good, but have been given to or discounted for them, but there may be comparable products at a fairer price for the rest of us. I’d love to find great products at affordable prices. Also, I am in Canada so a good portion of the products that are recommended are American and come at a steep exchange rate/duty. I say this all lightheartedly.
    Again, thank you for a thorough review of these resins ♥️

      Thank you! I don’t get any commissions on resin (maybe someday lol), but even if I did, I really prefer to do an honest review. It’s not helpful otherwise.

      Same here. Very disappointed to hear that about Art Resin. I thought it was supposed to be the best at not yellowing over time. I would be very interested to see what the indoor ones look like a year later and even two years later. Thank you Tiften Studio for this experiment.

    Very interesting experiments, appreciate efforts. I work in a UV additive company so know a bit UV resistance. Epoxy is considered UV sensitive, easily yellowing, no matter with our withou UV stabilizers, though adding some UV absorbers and light stabilizers normally can slow down yellowing anyway. Those stronger yellowed epoxy in your video after exposure to sun light simply meaning these are "aromatic epoxy", chemically different from "aliphatic" ones.

    This is such a helpful video! When I first started doing markets in the sun and heat I was horrified that some would get super floppy and distorted in the sun. It’s good to have some comparisons, although like you said it’s good to do your own research depending on your projects. Great video!

    Thank you so much for this video!👏 I used Art Resin on a mostly white acrylic pour project it yellowed terribly and I will have to redo that ~ however I used the same Art Resin on a maple slab counter top as a seal coat and it looks beautiful and has for years now. So I guess it matters what and how you use it!

    I would love to see the results of this in a list from yellow to clear, including the product names. I plan on doing a project for a table top for my patio - where I will want UV protection.

    • @tiffaniwilliamsfineart
      @tiffaniwilliamsfineart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I did not create a list because I don’t want it to seem like I’m recommending one resin over another. The ones with minimal or no yellowing are all excellent resins that I will continue to use. Since each has different properties that may make it more appropriate for a certain project over another, you can’t only judge resin by its UV resistance.
      And you should never use resin for an outdoor table. Every single resin on the market will yellow over time, and they don’t handle temperature changes/extremes very well. You’ll likely end up with warping or cracking.

      @@avisionphotography you're not going to be able to prevent yellowing outside. Plus the softening factor. Best you can do is coat it with a UV resistant finish like you would for wood. That is, if you want your resin to be clear

      Interestingly another lady did a test for 18 months plus and art resin didn’t yellow. They were all clear pours too. I’m a beginner but want to sell a product that won’t yellow! It’s very frustrating to not know what to do to prevent yellowing as this would be a disaster if you are selling products.

Resin is definitely the strangest medium I’ve ever worked with and the most unpredictable.😅 I sure have fun with it tho.😄 Having a project to de-mold.. is like Christmas morning. A great and thorough experiment. This might seem like a dumb question, I'm not sure but would you see yellowing if they're coloured with resin pigments?

    • @tiffaniwilliamsfineart
      @tiffaniwilliamsfineart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you would, but it would depend on the color. You would see it much more with white or lighter colors, and less with dark colors. Much more with transparent or translucent colors, less with opaque.
      I’ve heard people advise to add a bit of blue to counteract it, but yellow and blue make green lol. That doesn’t actually work.

    Curious, did you notice a bubble difference in these reins or did you use a pressure pot?

    • @tiffaniwilliamsfineart
      @tiffaniwilliamsfineart  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was mixing them as fast as I could so I wasn’t really paying attention to the bubbles. So totally disregard any bubbles, as I just left them since this wasn’t a bubble test. However, they all release bubbles pretty good. MAS and Naked Fusion are the thickest, so it takes a bit longer. Resin Rockers, Unicone, and Extreme Resin are really thin, so the bubbles release a little easier. The others are in between.

    Now I am just confused as I just seen a different video that did a advanced weathering experiment and showed that art resin had the lowest almost no yellowing occur, but in your demonstration it is the exact opposite🤔.. I haven't tried art resin yet but my wife is set on using it after reading of its low VOC's. I personally have had good luck with let's resin UV resin for smaller jewelry like my Galaxy spheres, but I like to clear coat them with Krylon triple thick Crystal Clear glaze.. hung one of my 25mm spheres on my rear view mirror of my car for over a month and no yellowing whatsoever as of yet. With your experience which epoxy resin is best for safest home use with minimal yellowing?

    • @tiffaniwilliamsfineart
      @tiffaniwilliamsfineart  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Who ran the experiment and how long ago was it? I’ve heard from several folks that tests in the last year or so are showing very bad yellowing. Maybe they changed their formula.
      All of the resins I tested except MAS are zero VOC. I personally enjoy working with Naked Fusion and Unicone. You can use discount code TIFTENART for 10% off if you’d like to try Unicone www.unicone-art.com/collections/resin-epoxy/products/unicone-art-epoxy-resin-kit-for-art-and-jewelry-making-clear-casting-liquid-1-gallon-set
