- BY REQUEST! I've gotten so many questions over the past 18 months about how actually go about selling your finds online, and I've addressed bits and pieces in other videos, but this is the START TO FINISH full guide :)
I'll cover the supplies you need, how to collect payment (and what BIG mistake to avoid there), properly packaging your items and how to purchase shipping labels for less than what you're paying at the post office.
Hope it's helpful!

Your video took some of the fear of the unknown concerning shipping a way. I had heard of Pirate ship but didn't really know where to start. You do such a wonderful job with all of your videos. Thank you from one Missourian to another 😊

Thank you, thank you❤ Such wonderful information for me! I haven't been able to make the leap into selling online because I was anxious about shipping. I know it's dumb as I ship to family once in awhile with no problem 😊. Now I can just watch and rewatch this video to get my confidence up. Thanks again ❤

You're welcome!
Love this video, Melanie! Thank you! I have a #3 for the biodegradable, starch based packing peanuts! Funny, but could have been a not so funny story! One of my goats (yes, goats) got into a box of packing peaunuts I had pulled out of my truck. There he was, eating the peaunuts! Btw, goats eat EVERYTHING! I thought all packing peanuts were made from styrofoam so I thought I may have a veterinary emergency on my plate! I googled, "what to do if your goat eats packing peanuts?" This is when I realized that some biodegradable packing peanuts were a thing! I took a few peanuts and put them in a glass of water. They dissolved! 🙏 Emergency diverted, Lol! So for those of us with pets, or curious toddlers, biodegradable packing peanuts are a must!
Oh my… yes, I’ve heard that goats will eat anything in sight 😂 Glad you had the biodegradable kind and that they didn’t get hurt!
Thank You, Melanie! Great info! So happy to have found your channel!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for this info. I am a ebay seller on the west coast. When I list an item i go ahead and package it up in the box, weight it, put the measurements into the ebay shipping calculator and make the buyer pay the correct shipping. When it does sell then its quickly ready to go already and they know and pay the exact shipping cost. Question is how can i do it this same way using the pirate ship service?
Are the shipping labels you purchase from Ebay discounted to a commercial rate? If so, then there's no need to use Pirate Ship. Of course you can still check to see if the price Ebay charges is more or less than what the label costs on Pirate Ship (it may be a bit cheaper!) If that's the case, you do all the same stuff you regularly do, but then just buy the label through Pirate Ship and upload the tracking number to the ebay order.
Thank you for all the valid tips…
You’re most welcome :)
Great tips, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank
Perfect video. I have been avoiding selling online (Ebay) because of the shipping UNKNOWN. Question: can I drop off box at a UPS also??
Yes! although usually they want you to wait in line to scan it in. UPS does pickups also at your house, but they charge for it.
@LostFoundDecor thank you. I've started selling and doing better on Ebay than my booth 😒
Great info! Do you have any videos on how to start an online business or how to go about driving traffic to your online business? Thanks! 😊
I would check out the video I have on what do to with your FB page to help boost your business… the same basic ideas apply. I don’t have a specific traffic driving video, but I would focus mostly on your social media. SEO and building an email list are also super important :)
thank you! one thing I didnt see was a postal scale or scale of some sort to get weight of item for shipping costs. any recommendation?
I just have a basic one that we bought from an office supply store :)
I agree Melanie! I never used the priority boxes, bc it cost me more. I also use and recycle! It saves me a ton. I get most of my packing from a health food store and my husband who owns a gun shop. I do buy supplies from Amazon, but not as much …I like bigger bubbles too! I only set up on Etsy and I sell local marketplace. I buy shipping labels from Etsy…I’m in Missouri, and it would cost more than $4 to ship that mug. I always add shipping to my listings. Ooooh! $5.99 That’s a risk! I might try it. Is shipping Pirate Ship cheaper than buying labels off Etsy?
Sometimes I have found cheaper labels on Pirateship, so I would check :) You can connect it to your Etsy shop so it pulls in orders automatically and then will automatically fulfill them in Etsy when you purchase the label. And yes… $5.99 is low and 90% of what I ship costs more than that. But again, I factor that into my overall pricing strategy :)
Thank you! I’m going to look into it!
Firstly, thank you for all the information.
Secondly, I have questions:
1. The term business that is used in antique selling at a market or online, can you define it please. Are we talking a legit LLC, S CORP, INC type of set up? I barely make booth rent to call it a business. If I’m selling 2-3 items per month online would I still set up a business payment account?
2. To set up a business account with PayPal or Venmo will I need an EIN number? Use my social security number? Would I need a business checking acct for the money to go into?
3. Is a business acct needed to purchase from U-line?
Thank you.❤ And thank you for the resources in this video.
Hi! Great questions! So here is the most basic tax info you need: if you generate more than 400 of sales in a calendar year, the IRS deems that a “business” and you should therefore be filing a self-employment schedule C tax return. Now… once you factor in all expenses, you may not have any real net income, but they still wanna see that return. At the basic level, that’s called being a sole proprietor. The other stuff you mentioned is more to do with the legal setup-an LLC separates you as a person from you as a business. I did not set up an LLC until I was 6 years into my j business and opened my own brick and mortar store. For the level you are at, it’s not necessary. And question 2, you don’t need an EIN to use the business functions of either PayPal or Venmo. As a sole proprietor, your business still runs off your SSN (for tax reasons) and so that will for for them also. Hope that helps!
@@LostFoundDecor thank you. I really really appreciate this information. Embarrassingly, I can’t say I make $400 a year. I recently moved to the very first isle a very busy isle and I think things will turn around for me. I remember you saying location location location…it has taken 3 years to get this spot. ❤️☺️
Thank you SO much for this info! Perfect timing and so clear. 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
