Being a revolver man I had the 357magnum/38 special as a common round. I also added 30.06 when I moved into grizzly country but the locals laughed and said that's the I asked what they used and they said a 12 gauge with a slug. I had two. A long barreled goose gun with 3 inch magnum which couldn't fire slugs but also a shot barreled root shotgun that did. I also added a 44magnum/44 special for when I was away from long guns. All except the revolvers were semi automatic. The only odds caliber I had was a 32 Smith and Wesson for a point blank hide out 5 shot revolver. I ended up selling them all to help pay for college after caretaking a ranch next to the Selkirk mountains.

I've always stocked at least 1,000 round of each caliber for each firearm I own with the exception of .22LR which I have at least 10,000 rounds. Then about three years ago, when ammunition was cheap, I made an impulse decision to invest the annual bonus from my job to double up my ammunition stocks. I also added a couple thousand rounds of 9mm even though I don't own any 9mm firearms. Now my ammunition inventory is worth significantly more than than the combined value of all of my firearms.
Sadly, now ammunition is too expensive to waste it plinking. Although .22LR is more reasonable at about 14 cents per round. And steel cased 7.62 X 39 is reasonably priced for a center fire rifle caliber. My SKS eats steel case ammo for breakfast which make for a great bug out / truck gun.

And the slug has a lot of energy yet at 200 yards. So yes you could consider is a short range sniper round with a big impact. And currently you can get them for about $1.00 each. Prioritize. You won't need a ton of handgun ammo. Handguns are useful when you need concealment. That's not an issue when society has collapsed. 22lr for food. 12 ga for food and defense. 5.56 for defense. If you reload, get a 223 bolt gun and a small base die to size the 556 brass. 7.0 gr of Green Dot under a 40 to 50gr vmax runs around 2000 fps and is cheaper and more accurat than any 22wmr ammo. Great 100 yd load for shooting squirrels, Groundhogs, and coons in the head. All of which are very edible. Can also be fired from an AR, but it won't cycle the action. I'm sure similar loads could also be developed for 60 to 70 gr expanding projectiles.

@@sway696 hahaha I am definitely outnumbered. I love my girls to death. Regarding ammo I have a couple thousand 556 rounds a couple thousand two two three rounds and we're approaching 1,000 12 gauge rounds. Right around 1500 rounds for the 9 mm. And several hundreds of rounds for all the other calibers both large and small.
Stay safe out there. Keep carrying and God bless. 🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏

Throw in some .357 for my Ruger revolvers and Henry Big Boy and you have yourself a deal.
