      One thing about Bakugo power is that his body isn't ordinary. Remember when Deku used his grenade gauntlet and hurt him a lot? All the time when Bakugo uses his power, his hands are like a fire cannon but still he is not hurt from any of the blasts he creates. That is because his body has really good endurance so taking 8% of all might strenght punch and not getting hurt too badly is acceptable :)

    This is one of the reasons that I love MHA so much. The developments with Iida shutting himself off emtoionally about Stain, Shoto's humorous comment about being cursed in making peoples' arms get injured, Froppy feeling like she can't hang out with everyone else after the rescue attempt, and Bakugo feeling helpless and responsible for All Might's retirement are all some good examples of this in the series. Those are all points where it's clear that Kohei Hoshikori _really_ thinks about how all his characters individually perceive events as kids & how they don't always understand things from the perspective of the audience, or the way that another character would think of things in their shoes. They're the moments that make the characters feel even more real, and the voice actors' work just comes in to absolutely knock it out of the park.
    This episode has excellent animation, and also continues down the path of not having Bakugo become a villainous rival, even though he's a jerk, he failed the licensing exam, and is in the position to be a foil to Midoriya on top of all that. It's little subversions in the common shonen tropes and twisting them in a different direction that makes it even more interesting as a story for me. Still hands down one of my favourite episodes of the series so far.

    Bakugo can still make as big of explosions without his gauntlets, it was shown in the midoria and bakugo vs all might episode. The gauntlets just make it so there’s no backlash and strain on his body. Yes the gauntlets do store up his sweat but that only releases when he pulls the pin from the grenade/gauntlet. Btw i loved the episode and your guys’ reaction. :)

    • @Vol7ar
      @Vol7ar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Also to note that fact that his explosions can have such backlash is the reason why he's so tough and strong. Same reason why the vibration guy from the other school in the license exam was resistant to Gang Orca's sonic stun attack thing.

    • @mordirit8727
      @mordirit8727 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Big, yes, but not like he was doing in this fight; firing something that big without the gauntlets hurts him enough to make him slow between explosions; if he had been using them, he could have pretty much doubled the size of every explosion he sent in this fight and still fight with the same speed and with just as tiny gaps between attacks.
      But same thing goes for Midoriya, if he had his metal shoes that kick to Bakugo's arms would have *at least* cracked a bone.

      By the way, while watching episodes from All Might's retirement till this episode, Kacchan had such eyes with kinda "unseen sadness"(except moments when he became angry). And only when I rewatched episodes, I realised. It was foreshadowing that this whole time, Bakugo was deep in sorrow thinking that do to his fault All Might lost his power. I never knew he could do something like that since the only roles I know him in are the MC of Tokyo Ravens (couldn't remember the name off the top of my head), Raishin from Unbreakable Machine Doll, and Bakugou in MHA. I frequently return to this episode just to see how he nailed it again

  • @golden.2862
    @golden.2862 5 ปีที่แล้ว +119

    My fav MHA episode. I'm both happy that we're finally here and sad that we're near the end!
    Some input for the discussion:
    *1.* Todoroki. While I do believe that Shouto is, along with Bakugou and Deku, one of the strongest three in the series, I don't think he's necessarily their rival. In the sports festival arc he challenged Deku as a rival for the sake of proving something to his father, but I feel like now Shouto's main conflict in the story is, like you said, himself, his father, accepting his powers, etc.
    *2.* Bakugou's had subtle hints of development and these "weaker moments" before in the series! But a lot of people overlook them because they're followed by more of his anger, such as the pair exams, the win at the sports festival, etc. I'm glad they've dedicated this episode to it and outright dragged it out of him for us lol
    *3.* The dub for this episode was great, I don't care what all of the sub enthusiasts say, I enjoy both and I think the dub VA for Bakugou did a fantastic job with the emotions we're supposed to feel. The visuals for this episode were also beautiful, Deku's kicks with the green energy around them and Bakugou's final blow in the air downward blessed my eyes
    *4.* IF I HEAR ANY OF YOU MENTION BAKUGOU POSSIBLY BEING A VILLAIN EVER AGAIN AFTER THIS EPISODE WE'RE GONNA HAVE SOME PROBLEMS

      @nocebo5792 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Yep, that was brilliant voice acting, just as good as sub. Yes, va of Bakugo nailed the job (in both versions), but as sub watcher I have to say that midoriya's dub va is finally doing better in emotional moments, and I hope he keeps getting better in later seasons.
      The main reason I still prefer sub is because in emotional moments (aka mostly big fights and strugles) japanese va work much better (except this fight, and maybe all might vs nomu), that's why in majority sub reactions people (myself included) sympathize with deku and don't mind him crying like at all while dub reactions are like "omg man why are you crying again, stop" (even when he has 2 broken legs, f up arm and is falling after big jump and might die). In sub va got that mongolian throat singing skill, I have no idea what they are saying most of time (without subtitles) but I tear up, feel inspired and energetic at the same time.
      But the dub have more jokes and some really good improvised lines, it's one of those shows that you can watch in both versions and it will be great in different ways (despite everything happening on the screen being the same).

And you can tell that the animation team put everything into this episode - the swooping shot is apparently incredibly difficult to do in 2D animation, but they wanted to do it so badly that they did it anyway. In the sub Deku says Bakugo is the incarnation of victory for him, his feelings for beating Bakugo is stronger than his feelings for saving Bakugo, because he looked up to Bakugo as much as All Might. For him, he needed to beat Bakugo in order to live up to the expectations and standard of All Might. Which In turn Bakugo felt the same way as they got older. That's why they make such good rivals.

    About the line Rick like "My ideal of victory is so tigh to the image of you.." in Japanese is even better in my opinion, Deku actually says "In my head, you are the image of victory". It explains so well why during the exam fight against All Might at the end of season 2 Deku punched Kacchan hard and yelled "Don't you dare to say you rather lose!" and he was kinda of angry with him. It was a great episode because their feelings were exposed, more Kacchan's feelings than Deku's tho. I think Kacchan as a long way to learn how to address his anger and relationship with Deku. Being good rivals is a first step.
    The idea of the future duo isn't actually far-fectched, it's actually a possibility because of the hints left by the author so far. =)
    All Might and Endevour were both UA students, they both graduated from UA, but they weren't in the same year. All Might is much older than Endevour. The latest has this competition in his head, but they weren't rivals the way Bakugou and Midorya are now. All Might was too ahead of everyone else that nobody had ever thought to "compete" against him in a way. Only Endevour never gave up on this goal.
    See you at the next episode!

      @Shirahime04 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @32287489543 Of course it has the same meaning, but when I said that in Japanese is better (to me) it's because grammatically speaking Deku used a form that put importance in his words. A kind of importance related at how truly he feels about Kacchan being the image of victory in his mind him. It's a nuance you can miss if you don't know it's there. =)

    Shoot Style (in anime so far) is typically based on kicks for example Sanji from One Piece Uses Shoot Style because as a chef he doesn’t use his hands for fighting just his legs.Hirokoshi was not the first to use Shoot style in this way.

    • @blackmanwhitesuit

      Shooting in a word used to reference initiating a takedown in any wrestling sport. Shoot or Strong-style is a professional wrestling term used to reference moves that make harder contact than regular sold moves. Basically, it's borderline real hits. I think the reason Deku named it that was to show that his fighting style is going to be very honest and straightforward full contact hits, which is very physically demanding especially in regards to durability.
      **cough** Or it could just be a cool name Hiroshi used to differentiate Deku's old fighting style from his new one which uses kicks.

    One very subtle change the anime did over the manga that I *love* so much is when they are walking back to be scolded by Aizawa.
    The manga just has All Might walking ahead of them and Midoriya and Bakugo walking side by side in a lane.
    The anime decided to change it a little so All Might is walking on top of the lane's dividing line, and each of them is walking at one side of the white line.
    When you look at the first 2 seasons, the anime has *always* , in episodes and OPs, adapted the concept of a lightning black line between Midoriya and Bakugo as the visual representation of their anger, conflict and hostility to one another; now, after they have finally become more rivals than enemies, there is still a line separating them... But it's smooth, instead of the violent lightning, and white instead of dark. A small tweak to the composition that visually shows how their relationship evolved into something more positive for the both of them.

    Tho the stakes are relatively low, and not a ton actually happens, this is one of my favorite episodes. I love the nuances of Deku and Kacchan's relationship that they really flesh out here. One particular thing to notice is how after deku realized kacchan was dealing with repressed anger and guilt, he *immediately* flipped from defensive to offensive, recognizing Katsuki's need to work out his emotions through serious battle. Deku knew what to do the second he had a grasp on the situation, indicating just how close the two really are despite the unhealthy nature of their relationship. Deku once again goes all out (well, as all out as you can get in a sparring match) with the intention of helping his opponent piece out the noise in his head. The same happened after their combat training, the only other time we've seen katsuki open up about his insecurities thus far. I think it lends to the idea that rather than being the source of katsuki's rage, deku acts as a conductor of it, helping Katsuki's turbulent emotions untangle into something manageable and familiar.

    Great episode. Definitely one of my favourites. Really opens up a lot of emotions and development for both Deku and Bakugo. I never thought Bakugo would blame himself for All Might’s retirement and it actually breaks my heart when you hear the crack in his voice when he finally opens up. It’s the first time I’ve felt genuinely sad for Bakugo. The animation is great and the fight sequences are really hype, especially the part where Deku’s lightning and Bakugo’s explosions collide which leads to Deku spinning and kicking which is so awesome.
    The best part is when All Might comes in to have that discussion with both Deku and Bakugo about how they can strive as heroes by understanding each other. It’s really heartfelt and emotional. The voice acting from Justin, Clifford and Chris was excellent. The actors really nailed the emotions that their characters were feeling. However, this still doesn’t justify Bakugo’s behaviour in the past. It doesn’t mean I like him properly yet but it’s a really good start by having him open up with the emotions that he’s been feeling. Hopefully this is the start of Deku and Bakugo having a more healthy relationship now even if it’s still a rivalry, it can now become more healthy and less toxic. The after credit scene was a great example of Bakugo finally talking to Deku properly without snapping or losing his cool. He was actually giving him advice and it felt really nice.

He’ll get stronger as he gets older to be able to use all that power. Bakugo is literally the same. It’s heavily implied that he holds back a lot for two reasons. 1: He doesn’t actually wanna kill anyone, suggesting he could easily if he wanted to, and 2: because his powers hurt him. Same as Deku’s does. Bakugo won fair and square, stop pushing the idea that Deku wasn’t at 100%

    I know this is an older video and Idk if anyone else has said this. But I'm pretty sure shoot style is a soccer reference. Shooting in soccer is when you kick the ball towards the goal, as opposed to dribbling (keeping the ball in your possession while moving down the field and past defenders) and passing (sending the ball to your teammate to receive). While shooting is usually a more powerful kick because your goal is to get past the goalie and into the goal, it also requires precision to aim.

This could legit be used in a classroom to exemplify the animation principles. I think my favorite little detail is when Bakugo throws Deku so hard that he can't regain balance and just crashes into the railing. It's something you so rarely see in any animation but it conveys so much weight and power, i love it.

I'm a goalie so I've seen those big swooping kicks he does whenever someone tries to shoot on net. What really sold me on it, is that amazingly animated and fast footwork shot where he winds up before bringing his foot down on Kacchan. How when it zooms in close to their faces it starts to vibrate out of control until they turn around and punch each other? It symbolizes their rocky relationship at that point. Here, in this episode, when All Might says that they could learn something from each other, the line that separates them is completely still when they look at each other. It's the first time they finally get an understanding about each other.

    This is when Deku and Kacchan really stepped closer toward the All-Might vs. Endeavor kind of relationship. Endeavor wanted to be the #1, but he didn't want it gifted to him. Just like Kacchan wants to be the best, but he wants to win while the other gives it 100%. They don't particularly like each other (well, 1 side does, but the other gets annoyed) but they at least respect each other. Deku seemed to finally earn some of Kacchan's respect this episode. And the animation and music of this episode was terrific, but the dialogue...sensational.
