    Great home, if Julia is open to it I would enjoy her and Nick sitting down with the plans or CAD model and walking through her design process. Decisions and tradeoffs etc. Especially as they pertain to high performance. Thanks for the great content.

    Maybe a bit late but you should offset the joints horizontally and vertically on the to layers of rockwool comfortboard to minimise the bridging.

    What if you didn't add that second layer of plywood? Could use the Z-Girt and attach wood battens or a product like Kebony's clip-in rail system to attach siding? I am curious because I am looking for an effective and low cost way to attach vertical siding with 6" of exterior insulation that is also DIY friendly .

    How to minimize the heat leak from gaps in the rockwool joints? If the heat leak issue big enough to be worth fixing? The rockwool joints are not staggered between layers, so that will cause a heat leak line. It looks like there will be a gap between rockwool panels caused by the 1/8" thickness of the Z Girt web and the stiffness of the rockwool. There will be variation in the rockwool x rockwool gap due to variation of where the Z Girts are installed. These points all cause heat leaks, but I are they are large enough to be significant?

    • @sylvainchantal7983
      @sylvainchantal7983 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed the same flaw and reckon that these thin gaps (1/8" lines created by the thickness of the Z Girt) between the Rockwool panels would create a serious heat lost around the insulation. I would love to see the final result and see if this issue has been fixed.

    I'm surprised in such a highly insulated building that skylights are being used. Even the best skylights are a giant "hole" in the insulation and depending on the orientation a skylight is potentially a high solar gain during the summer cooling season and very little gain duri g the winter heating season.

    • @julianugentarchitect
      @julianugentarchitect 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Does a skylight negatively impact heat loss and gain? Absolutely. But it brings in daylight, provides cross ventilation, and makes a small space seem larger. Good design requires balancing choices across dozens of categories, not optimizing a single metric at the expense of all others.

    • @macgyver03ga
      @macgyver03ga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@julianugentarchitect bingo! I would much rather live in a comfortable house with lots of natural light, compared to living inside a sealed yeti cooler. We’re building a new house right now (just got drywall) and one of my must haves was lots of natural light in as many places as possible. We put velux sun tunnels in the upstairs interior bathrooms and the back hallway upstairs. The only “dark” rooms in the house that don’t have a natural light source are the closets, and the interior powder bathroom on the main level.

    I think y'all went overboard on the roof z girts. If you understand uplift you really won't have much if any between the first layer of sheeting and the second layer of sheeting. For three reasons. 1 that area is sealed for all intense purpose. 2 the area is filled with insulation. These two actually contribute to the 3rd. For uplift to occur on the field of the roof you need positive air pressure under the sheeting. Well if air can't get in and the space is filled with insulation how are you going to get positive air pressure to blow the roof off? Yes you may get a little under overhangs if you have them but most house have them and typically you only need a 2x1 ratio of support into the roof for the overhang.
    Same goes for the walls. Again hard to get positive pressure in a sealed and filled space. If your roof and wall framing are sufficient to keep the first layer of plywood from blowing off I doubt the second layer has any chance of blowing, sucking or uplifting off or whatever you want to call it as long as you use sufficient method of screwing the z-girt to the framing.
    Prove me wrong? Think about it you only have a screw every 2 feet on the roof girts so except for the edges what does it matter if they are continuous once you put the plywood on?
