This is my 1989 Volvo 760 with B280F PRV V6 engine in it, one of the two head gaskets are blown so the engine is just crap. But maybe it will start anyway !?.. i will take the engine out of this car and use the car for some other projects in a close future i think. The 760 also was available with a turbo engine B230FT, Volvo 760 Turbo,
These cars are common to re-build with a Volvo T5 engine, B5234T, B5204T, even diesel engine D5252T and D5244T. Or also D24T.

B280F engine is basically a good one. The old issues with the camhafts and rocker arm shafts on the B27/B28 were solved in this version, they run smoothly as well. Head gaskets are a typical issue, but no major concern. In Germany, driven on the Autobahn with frequent full throttle, they usually give out between 200.000 and 250.000 km, but that's just material fatigue due to the wet cylinder barrels working in the alloy engine block. Change head gaskets and you're fine, heads are usually perfectly okay. And NEVER give it full throttle before it's properly warmed up!

The engine is not so bad..! Just do the gasket and happy days - keep using!

These engines need good servicing - never run with dirty oil, good coolant and inhibitors, close attention to valve clearances and so on - then they are smooth and powerful and reliable. Mine is perfect at 193000 miles, not a huge total but it has been looked after and, while it is not tolerant of neglect and abuse like the 4 cylinder engines (don't boil it up!) it drives very well. If you do wreck it then put in a small block V8!

Mine is a 1990 Volvo 760 GLE . Same B280F engine. I was told by my mechanic that this is a Peugeot engine that was also used in the DeLorean This car/ engine combination is very rare. Mine had 255,000 miles when i had the original engine pulled and junked due to blown head gasket(s). Due to the complexity of the engine I could not find any Volvo mechanic who wanted to tackle this job. I found a used B280F engine in a Volvo salvage yard, and had it swapped in. In the video your odometer registers 374,000. I have never changed the fuel pumps (this car has two, one in the tank and another under the car). I have also never changed the fuel filter. Have you ever had to change these parts? It gives me hope that I can probably drive a few more thousand miles without replacement. Based on where these parts are positioned, it's almost as though Volvo is saying, "You will never have to replaced them"!

Do you still have this car? I had an 87 that my parents bought new. I also had a 1990 which was the last year and more desirable. The 1987 and newer 760s were Peugeot/Volvo/Renault design. Complicated but a good engine. Some people blew the head gaskets when they ran hot. Water pumps were the weak point. I replaced 4 on my 87 in 200k miles. But that was all I ever replaced. The 1986 and older were junk. They had trouble idling among other woes. That engine was the one used in the Delorean.

Yes, I still have mine. The used replacement engine still runs great. The salvage yard could not provide any information on mileage or date-of-manufacture.. Have you been able to locate any specific points on the engine block where the date-of-manufacture may be stamped? In that way I might be able to research possible factory notes specific to that year. Another TH-cam poster has removed the In-line fuel pump under the car, and replaced the In-tank pump with an aftermarket pump, thereby operating the car with one fuel pump instead of two. I think that's just great, do you!

Andrew Peterkin it’s worth a shot and give it a try. There is not much in the 760 on TH-cam. Especially on v6 models. The junkyard engine you bought is 99% sure an 87 or newer. The older version was made from like 82-85 and was sooooo unreliable. I think they skipped a year in 86 by just only offering the 4 cyl turbo.

Volvo should make the engine themselves, it would skyrocket the durability ....
