My parents saw Streisand at a nightclub in the early-1960s. They said she was going to be a star someday. My own adult children have asked me why I’ve been such a big fan. I said, you have to understand that she was absolutely unique, utterly original. I can’t think of anyone else today who has the same ability to dazzle, and who’s so expert in so many aspects of movies and music.
Liza was in great voice at this time. Would have been wonderful if she and Barbra done a big, belting dance song duet...."Enough is Enough" style.....or a whole album. Or Cher and Liza...that would have been great, too.
That has always been one of the great wishes from Streisand fandom. We do know, though, that Barbra and Liza love and support each other. That's one grand soul giving back to another.
Wow!!! How lovely!!! I've always loved Barbra. (I just missed a trip to visit friends in Ireland because of the virus and I'm bummed about it.) PEACE to ALL ... and STAY SAFE and HEALTHY.
@@sheilaburns8977 oh no...well when you do come, come either in mid-May (very green!) or July/Aug (better weather). I hope when you make it, you'll have misty water-coloured memories to light the corners of your mind 😉
There's a lotta Garland fans out there on TH-cam who say she's the best entertainer ever! But I think that Whitney Houston had the best voice which was ruined by drugs!
Back when the Oscars were still classy and all the A List stars still showed up. Nobody got slapped, no cursing, and the greatest host of all time, Billy Crystal. What a great clip... Liza, Shirley, Barbra, Goldie, Diane, Bette, and Billy.... Doesn't get much classier, legendary, or A List then that.
And why haven’t these performers worked with Streisand? It’s very sad. They should have all collaborated. Barbra, Liza and Shirley Bassey should have sung together. And perhaps Bette. One can only hope that Ryan Murphy or someone will cast them all together in some phenomenal project. Before these ladies are all too old....
Streisand herself makes it so confusing because she always describes her name as having a “soft s”. But actually she wants the s pronounced sharp (s not z).
@@rma3_3_3 So why are you even commenting on a thread that is clearly a celebration of Ms. Streisand? By saying "everyone", that obviously includes the subject matter of this video. Unless, of course, you failed to view the entire video.
I remember the 1997 academy awards. The Academy had snubbed Barbra in the past, particularly with “Yentyl”. And there was a big hullabaloo bc Barbra was asked to sing the song she wrote from the movie she directed and stared in, and she said no. (I want to say Faith Hill wound up singing it). Madonna also sang “You Must Love Me” from “Evita”, which eventually won for that year. I distinctly remember Billy Crystal making some sort of comment when Madonna sang that was seen at a dig at Streisand. Something to the effect of “wasn’t that great of Madonna to perform tonight when asked.” Something like that. (And I love Billy Crystal and Madonna, so I’m not trying to slander them). But it just goes to show how public attention and scorn can change so quickly. Madonna had just come on out of the rain following her 1992 trifecta: “Sex” Book, “Erotica” album & “Body of Evidence” movie. She took a lot of heat for a while about that. But after having her daughter and her “Evita” performance, she was back in the good graces of Hollywood, however Hollywood at that time started attacking Barbra as “the diva”, the “ungrateful” star, etc. so I think Bette’s introduction was kind of a clap back (in her sassy way of talking) at BC and how Barbra was treated that year. (Bette had been peeved with the Academy after her second loss in 1992, so she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind.) But Barbra was too smart to let any of that nonsense bother her. And that’s why I still adore her!
Billy Crystal's comment was about how classy it was for Madonna to call the show and offer to sing even if she wasn't nominated. The press made an issue of this because the camera panned at Barbra (who was speaking to James Brolin) while Crystal was making the statement. In fact, I thought it was rude for Crystal to say that about Madonna, because it portrayed her as too needy. Barbra turned down the producers'' request for her to sing "I Finally Found Someone" on the telecast, so they get Natalie Cole instead. When Natalie begged off at the last minute due to illness, Barbra stepped in to offer to sing. The producers then turned her down because there wasn't much time left for her to rehearse. Celine Dion, who was already on board to perform "Because You Loved Me", was asked to step in.
Faith Hill sang the 2 nominated songs from Yentl at the Academy Awards? Not really! Donna Summer did! I have all the Academy Awards recorded since 1980 till today and I remember this very well! By then Barbra said that she would only sing songs that she had composed herself. But she also did not sing I finally found someone at the Oscars. Celine Dion did! It seems that Barbra had pharyngitis or something close to that, that night!
Shirley saying “real life human beings” was probably a stab at Beauty and the Beast being nominated for Best Picture Oscar that year, which ruffled some feathers in Hollywood. And obviously, “THE DIRECTOR” is a stab at Bab’s snub in the Best Director category
Billy genuinely, genuinely did not like Bette in particular trying to throw jabs at Madonna and commenting on her performance. That’s why he made the joke about the three of them at the end.
I adore all of these ladies! Just think. It's 2019. Will we see Streisand hand an Oscar to Lady Gaga tonight? Wouldn't that be a gas! I love Streisand and Gaga!
