I love the story about Bob Denver going to the producers and demanding that Russell and Dawn be added to the opening credits.

I was born in 1978! I love this classic television show and the classic theme song! I love the fact that they did add the professor and Mary Ann in the next season! Thank you for posting and sharing this high-definition recording!

I just went on a cruise in the Bahamas and when we took a fairy boat to Blue Lagoon Island, we passed the original Island that they show in the opening sequence as they sing "here on Gilligan's Isle". I got it on video and adding it to my swimming with dolphins episode:) I just thought that was so cool seeing as how I watched this show as a kid.

I saw it a lot in reruns in the afternoons in the '80s. Had the Gilligan's Island floating bathtub playset too. I don't remember being aware that the show was 15-20 years old.

Same. I had no idea Season 1 was in black and white until it aired elsewhere like Nick At Nite. When I first saw it on Turner Cable, it was the Colorized Version

If you notice the American flag at seconds 19-20 you'll see that its flying at half-mast. That's because this scene was shot only days after President Kennedys assignation .

I'm so glad that Bob Denver (Gilligan) set the producers straight on adding Russell Johnson (the Professor) and Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) to the opening credits. I'm sure Russell and Dawn were outraged when they heard "and the rest" instead of "the Professor and Mary Ann" and didn't see their names in the opening credits in Season 1.

Gilligan's Island's S.S. Minnow was named as an insult to the chair of the FCC. Gilligan's Island creator Sherwood
Schwartz named the ill-fated S.S. Minnow after the then-chair of the FCC who Schwartz said "ruined television."
On May 9, 1961, Newton N. Minow, the recently-appointed Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), gave one of the most famous speeches in American history. Appearing at the 39th Annual Convention of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) in Washington, D.C., Minow decried the "vast wasteland" that television had become and demanded that the networks take more responsibility for the content of the shows they aired.
Almost overnight, Minow's address caused every facet of television production to be rethought and reshaped. In Sherwood Schwartz's estimation, this retooling sounded a death knell for programming independence and integrity:
To "punish" Minow for what he had wrought, Schwartz decided to name the show's ill-fated ship after him.

I like the way the Wellingtons perform this here much better than the other group on subsequent seasons - this sounds much more like an authentic folk song. Even though I enjoyed this show as a kid in the '60's, it still has a lot of appeal. I think at the time it was known as the "idiot child" of CBS, but its popularity trumps that comment, and it still makes me laugh, and that's all that's important. Thumbs up!

They redid the credits at Bob Denver's demand to have Russell Johnson & Dawn Wells included in the opening credits instead of just appearing as "the rest" for the opening and as co-starring roles on the ending credits. At the same time they switched to filming in color instead of B&W - supposedly this and possibly giving Tina Louise a raise to appease her created additional expenses so they replaced The Wellingtons with a cheaper band The Eligibles. However, The Wellingtons and Les Crane, Jr. appear in a Season 2 episode Don't Bug the Mosquitoes as a parody of The Beatles. Personally I'd prefer the voices of The Wellingtons - perfection would have had them singing "the Professor and Mary Ann" all along.

The show is a classic. But the theme song can forever be blamed for making people think Crusoe is Caruso...

My guess is they were thinking of Enrico Caruso when recording the song and somehow combined Robinson Crusoe with Enrico Caruso.

Same here. I also liked the Johnny (John) Williams incidental music better than the Season 2 and 3 Gerald Freid music. Especially the last bit at the end of each Season 1 episode as we saw the island from out at sea and the "Gilligan's Island" title.

Yes your right about that Paul. I have read that myself several times that it was shot just after the assassination. It is hard to see, especially just watching it here on TH-cam, but there is also what appears to be a second flag even further off in the background as they are leaving the harbor, at about that same mark, that also appears to be at half staff. It is easier to see that on a TV.

As I told on another site one can imagine that for the first season if the Profesor and Mary Ann were included it chances are would've been said as The Professor and Farmgirl.

    THE BALLAD OF GILLIGAN'S ISLAND
    (reprise)
by George Wylie and Sherwood Schwartz
🎵 Now this is the tale of our castaways, they're here for a long, long time. 🎵
🎵 They'll have to make the best of things. It's an uphill climb. 🎵
🎵 The first mate and his Skipper too will do their very best, 🎵
🎵 to make the other's comfortable in their tropic island nests. 🎵
No phone. No light. 🎵 No motorcar, not a single luxury. 🎵
🎵Like Robinson Crusoe, it's primitive as can be. 🎵
🎵 So join us here each week my friends, you're sure to get a smile, 🎵
🎵 from seven stranded castaways, here on Gilligan's Isle. 🎵

Anyone notice during the closing credits of Season 1 Gilligan is missing when everyone else is sitting around the radio on the beach except for a brief shot of him somewhere else fishing - all of them appear in the closing credits of Seasons 2 and 3? Also, at the end of the opening credits for Season 2, Russell Johnson appears in the upper left corner and Dawn Wells is in the lower right corner - this is reversed for the end of the opening credits for Season 3.

What I'm about to get into is so ironic!! The Wellingtons sung the first season Gilligan's Island theme song, and it's rather obvious! Their name appears in the ending credits, and they even starred in an episode entitled - Don't Bug The Mosquitoes!! But when they did their version of the song it didn't include the Professor and Mary Ann. So, since the Wellingtons were unavailable, another group was commissioned to sing the "revised " theme song. Enter- The Eligibles, even more unknown than the Professor and Mary Ann! Their name is listed nowhere in the closing credits at all! The Wellingtons were and so was Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells!! So, to provide a little 'justice" for Russell Johnson and Dawn Wells, there was a complete "injustice" done to the Eligibles!! It wasn't until years later that they finally got all the royalties they were owed! The Wellingtons did a good job with their version of the theme song, and even better as The Mosquitoes, playing that wonderful bug (Beatles) music!! But folks and folkettes, I'm here to sing the praises of The Eligibles or The Rest, if you will!!🇺🇲📺🎬🏖🛥🌫🌩🌬🏝⚓️🛖🕯💰📻🎤🦟🍯🐝🥧🍘🍌🦧1️⃣5️⃣YEARS ‼️
