Initially, I think of the freedom and adventure; then, reality sets in: having to purchase bottled water while traveling, switching out propane tanks, tiny refrigerator, spending much of a day in a dingy laundromat, emptying waste tanks (finding places to do so and paying for it, likely more expensive than utilities for a home or apartment), desperately short showers, finding places to park at night (KOAs? "Stealth camping?"), etc. Sounds like a full time job!
Fair enough...it's not completely without challenges, but you're just camping, you're not going into the wildnerness for six months at a time! So this is how I handle those issues you raise... I personally choose to stay mainly at paid campsites that usually have electric and water hookups, great showers, waste dump points and laundry facilities. I have a water tank under my van that holds one week's worth of water, so there is no need to buy bottled water. I also don't use propane as I have an aversion to it so cooking is done on a small electric plate that can run off my solar power pack if I'm off grid or my solo stove that runs on fire made with sticks. Tiny fridge? Yes, but you can easily stock up on a week's worth of food, and it's not like there aren't supermarkets in every town! The laundromat? Gosh, I have so many videos on my channel of how I do laundry days! I often just use the "soak in a bucket/stomp with your feet method," but the machines at laundromats are usually bigger and faster than domestic ones. At most, you'll spend a couple of hours there.. or chilling back at your van if you're at a caravan park. I also bought a small portable RV washing machine to save on coins if I'm broke. If I do go free camping/ "boondocking" it's only for a week or so and then when I need all the luxuries of water, power, showers and laundry, I go stay at a caravan park. It's still cheaper than renting a flat and paying for utilities no matter how you look at it.
