  • Bokeh Challenge Part 2 -Nocticron vs the rest
    The second part of my bokeh challenge. I'm comparing 6 portrait tele lenses. How does the Nocticron 42,5mm F1.2 stack up in this comparison.

    Surprising how little difference there is wide open between the Lumix 42.5mm 1.7 and the Leica 42.5 1.2. Considering their usual application as portrait lenses, and the limitations of TH-cam compression, the price difference of £299 compared to £1149 seems hard to justify.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference certainly is not that big, but that's how it is, for the last few percent of gain you pay a lot more. However, it's good to realize that the Lumix has slightly narrower angle of view, which helps a bit too.

      I have the Noctricron For video the extra capture area is great as the cheaper lens captures slightly less area at the same distance especially if your camera crops in on 4k like my G85 but the 1.7 is great for street as it’s compact and light

      I wonder if the Leica lenses can pull ahead when a higher resolution is used, exposing a bigger difference when using the 80MP high resolution mode?

    Thanks for the comparison. One suggestion: leave the shots up for at least six seconds. TH-cam allows you to use the arrow keys to skip forward/back by 5 seconds when paused which makes it easier to compare the shots.

    considering the price difference the 1.7 is plenty good enough

    Quality and shape of the bokeh is amazing and the lens is super small with low market velue.

    • @karolkizlo1945

      @ i love 12-40 f2.8 Olympus ... But people usually go for Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 due to built in image stabilizer. These are lenses which cover basic needs if it comes to angles of view.

    As with the previous challenge, I find the brief glimpses of each, and also the inability to zoom to 100% makes it almost impossible to really compare. It would be nice if you could upload them somewhere for more careful consideration.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your input. The video is 4k and when I watch it on my 27 inch screen the photos are about 10x17 inch, which should be enough to see any differences. You can always pause the video and like I said this not meant to be scientific 100% pixel peep. I'll consider your proposition in the future.

    I d like to see cheap and tiny Lumix 35-100 3.5-5.6 in this test. It's the most popular and you reviewed it in the past. Great fun!

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have that lens any more, I returned it, so could not have it. However, suspect it would look very similar to the Lumix G 12-60mm.

  • @ruuddirks5565
    @ruuddirks5565 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Surprisingly little difference. It seems that smaller sensor size becomes the great equalizer. More than variation in the aperture.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the pictures size, the final output size, is much more of an equalizer. Very small pictures have less difference and large have more, because in large size you can see more.

    Hi Matti: I watched both of these comparisons and I must not be a lens snob because I think they are all good with the differences being very minor. I don't think most people would notice the difference. So, I'm not sure that the additional cost of the Nocticron is worth it -- to me anyway. I really enjoy your channel and the thought that you put into your content. Thanks!

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your kind words. That's it, they look very similar here, at least. The differences may be a big deal to some, but some could not care less. It really depends on what you are shooting.

    No difference to me at f 5.6 - wide open the were 5 and 6 but could not tell which is which - see now there were the two leica‘s - it‘s probably me being used to leica lenses

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I don't have that lens, but there are two other lenses at F2.8 and they probably look pretty close the same as the 35-100mm would look.

    • @Mir1189
      @Mir1189 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattisulanto I highly recommend 35-100 F2.8 (Mark II) as well. I expected it will be a common tele zoom lens, but it turned out to be great for portraits as it does incredible subject/background separation, when every detail on the subject is perfectly sharp.
      Also i guessed right Nocticron and Lumix 42.5 F1.7. :)
