    We had a gas station where I used to live that had a huge parking lot on the property for semis. Easy in and out, and the owner was letting semis park for free overnight. His only request was to make some kind of purchase even if it's a pack of gum. I noticed one day there was a sign saying there was a $20 parking fee, and if you didn't pay you got towed. It seemed a bit out of character for this guy to charge when he's always been so nice to truckers. I asked him why the charge, and he said it's a full-time job for 1 employee to keep it clean because of the piss jugs and shit-bags that were tossed out in the parking lot. People were even ditching old tires and trash bags for them to pick up. In the end, some ruined it for all. The lesson to be learned here.. if you see someone doing this, make sure to toss their discarded items back into their cab. 👍

    Making sure I can find parking is part of the reason I run on recap hours... Unless you run nights, or start at 2 or 3am every day you can't fit a 10-11 hour drive shift in and be confident of finding parking. Starting at 6am like a normal diurnal human and going 8-9 hours makes for a much more reasonable sleep schedule and better chance of finding parking. Yeah you make less money that way but I'm in my first year and honestly still in awe of taking home more than 15k/year which is how much I made throughout my 20s.

    • @TheDa6781

    Parking is where planning is essential. The big problem is everyone wants to park at the same time. At 9 AM, you can find parking, any where.

    • @stevanlucas3071
      @stevanlucas3071 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly.
      I try to start my drive 330-4am and look for parking midafternoon. Easier to find a spot and I enjoy the sunrise in the morning and a real evening.
      Yes pick-up/delivery times and all the other shit I cant control makes this impossible at times.

      @@stevanlucas3071 This job is really management. We manage four clocks, shippers, receivers, dispatchers, equipment, and ourselves. As I pulled into this Love’s a few minutes ago, I saw lines of trucks illegally parked on the ramps, the shoulders, and a few other creative spaces. At least ten open parking places, now. I even found a nice straight line back. I love running splits.

  • @cotjocky466
    @cotjocky466 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In total agreement, but wanted to point out you have a "logo" of Love's in that presentation, at least at this time, Love's does not have a reserved section and does not charge for parking. I'm sure they are just as profit greedy as the others, but you can't loop them in the pay for parking scheme that I'm aware of unless it's different out west.

    • @TruckingSeriously
      @TruckingSeriously  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for pointing that out - Love's is definitely the lesser of the three evils, and I do appreciate their refusal to succumb to the paid parking scheme. This was more nuanced than I had time for in the video, but I still can't bring myself to give them a pass, though... Even though they're not directly profiting off the parking problem, I don't feel like they're trying very hard to solve it, either. If we've decided to let private enterprise be the main provider of truck parking (see for ex. www.9news.com/article/news/nation-now/why-old-fashioned-highway-rest-stops-are-disappearing/73-427518382 ), then companies like Loves should have some obligation to truckers, consumers, the supply chain, etc to offer adequate capacity. But they aren't doing that - almost every Love's is overflowing almost every night, and it's been that way for years. But how often do you see one under construction to add more parking? In three years OTR, I can recall seeing maybe two...? It's like they signed their names (along with pilot, ta, etc) on the societal chore list under "give trucks enough parking," ignored the job and then spent their whole allowance on roller dogs and glass figurines

      @@TruckingSeriously ugh, and Love's parking lots where I usually drive are tiny and always full by like 5pm. On the MA and NY border and running out of hours at night? Guess where you aren't parking.

    I’d love to see your take on Walmart offering 100k+ yearly salaries, do you think this will be short term or will companies start paying truckers more?

    • @rayzala1393
      @rayzala1393 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Honestly I believe it. Every driver I've talked to who worked at Wal Mart had nothing but good things to say. In fact the last guy I talked to said he literally cried when he got fired. He argued with the manager and it is a more corporate environment so he got fired. But he said they were very generous and never pushed you hard. We live in Canada where marijuana is legal in your off time but since Walmart is a US company they have to operate by US rules and thus drug test so I have no interest in working for them but most drivers dont (cant) indulge so WalMart seems like a good gig.

    • @buddhatheauthor
      @buddhatheauthor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Walmart had to up their pay to match pay who require a spotless record and as much driving experience as they do. That being said, I'm putting my time in until I can go Walmart private fleet by working for a 3rd party company out of the same Walmart DC I'll be applying to. Can't wait to double my pay in a year, woohoo.
