    Two pro tips: put down a tarp before tossing dirt all over your lawn, and use a speed square to mark pavers like this for curves (put in place, square on the set paver and simply draw a line).

    I'm a homeowner in Ca. -----Yes fruit & nut land :) The garden paths in my Japanese style garden are done with 5" of road base, heavy duty nursery mat, 1" sand, pavers & Polymeric sand........enclosed on all sides by 8" deep x 6" wide poured in place, formed concrete edging. It will last for a very long time, with some maint. to any Poly sand that might come out of the joints. All the work this took, is the reason so many "easy peasy" systems are out there. Few people will put in the work necessary to have a substantial, long lasting structure. IMHO of course......

    On the inside of the curve Roger back cut the bricks so they met at the same angle. Did that have to be done to all the courses around the curve? How do you keep the stagger pattern, as each course is a different length?

    • @joshseal2000

      RangerCaptain11A wondering the same thing, did you ever get an answer?

    • @boyshanks
      @boyshanks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Joshua Seal I don't have an official answer but here's what I think. Knowing that you want to keep it staggered you have to control that. It won't happen randomly. I think they lay the full bricks starting in the center so that the bricks are sure to be staggered.
      When that is complete, they go back and cut the bricks to fit the ends. I hope I was clear.

    Thanks for all of the good info, it is a fantastic video, but with one glaring oversight,,,you never showed what it looked like when it was done! What I was really hoping to see after all those steps was a shot or two, or three, or four, of THE FINISHED PRODUCT!!!

    Using sand is so old school. Stone dust is used as a leveling compound and polymeric sand is used in the cracks. Polymeric hardens when dry stopping weeds and ants from coming through and is pliable when wet to let water drain.

      the pipes are 1 inch diameter pipes. you would use 1 inch of sand on top of the gravel base. after that you lay the pipes down at whatever width you're screeding. And that ends you with a perfect 1 inch depth of sand. any more sand and it will become unstable.

    Does the final tamping of the pavers push the paver down any further? Do we need to adjust for the change of paver height before the final tamp?

    • @vladtepes97
      @vladtepes97 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not really. pretty close to no. the tamper mostly just provides vibration which allows the sand on top to fill the voids between the bricks.

    • @toscodav

      wrong. The sand is loose so the paver will sink into it a little.

      One inch of sand. No more than that or it becomes unstable. the rails he points to are a 1 inch diameter rail so that would give you the right depth while screeding. And no the final sand layer that they sit on doesn't get compacted.

    • @toscodav
      @toscodav 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roger said to tamp the sand before screeding. doesn't sound right.

    • @terrythomas790
      @terrythomas790 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toscodav I think it looks like they used too much sand. The rock base should be built up and compacted to a flat surface. Then you lay the pipe on top of this and lay the sand and screed that off to the one inch thickness. You dont compact the sand. As you lay the pavers , you dont disturb the sand. Keep it flat and smooth. More time is used to get that stone base to the right height, smooth ,and compacted. Get that right, and the rest should be perfect.

  • @secondchance3693

    I usually find this old house educational. But please explain why you didn't use a fabric cloth to hold the crush base better. I have never seen anyone not use it. Your rock over time While settle into the soil. I think you had an off day here.

    • @bowgy4
      @bowgy4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the soil composition whether you need it or not. Not saying that's why they didn't do it (practices change over time and this video is older) but you see it all over in some geographies and it's never used in others.

    How did you install the pipes on which you you used the 2X4 to level the sand ?

      I did Hardscaping....You lay the poles flat on the ground. Add sand on top, middle, bottom to hold each pole which are parallel to each other. Set the brick at the string to make sure it's even and flush at height. Then just fill sand in between the poles. Used a screeding bar not a wood 2x4! Screed the sand back. Slide poles out...do not pull! Then start your soldier course of pavers and fill the center using a T pattern for stability meaning "offset". Cut any necessary curves with a saw. It's labor intense but not hard. Good luck!
