A stimp is 36in because it's 3ft. That way you can flip the stimp end over end and measure how far the ball rolls without the need of a tape measure. Most stimps have notches on side at 1ft and 2ft just incase it doesn't roll perfectly out at 3ft, 6ft and 9ft etc. Hope this helps 👍
There’s a ton of Vloggers and instagram influencers in the golf world. You give off the most genuine vibe. These videos are terrific and you and your dad are great!
I’ve never seen your channel. Thoroughly enjoyed this video for the golf but mostly for the father son relationship. I lost my dad in January and miss him more than anything. Enjoy every minute, fellas! Consider me subscribed!
From working at a course to talking to other greens keepers. It should be between 9.5-10.....Unless you are preparing for tournament play. Which usually is between 10.5 to 12. That was my very first job! I worked at Marshall Country Club in Marshall Michigan! I have tbh, it was one of my all time favorite jobs! In I'm actually a certified Welder, was a certified Diesel Tech for a few years. I Trimmed trees for our Utility/Electricity company so I was a Professional Line Clearance arborist, climbing trees, running a bucket truck everything. Also was a Floor Care Specialist for a few years, stripping in waxing floors for factory offices break rooms, school flooring etc. In like I said, my favorite job. Which I think was the lowest paying job, was a Greens keeper! FYI: I loved golfing and was allowed to whenever I wanted, except on tournament days! If ur still reading this I apologize for rambling so much. I'm just a very detailed man! Lbvs!
We give so much credit to Scuba Steve but he's the Kramer to your Seinfeld. You set him up constantly and he never misses the opportunity make us laugh. Thank you both for sharing.
You guys are awesome!! Loved watching the banter between father and son and doing this in you "shop" reminds me of the countless projects my dad and I did together. This made my day. Thanks!!
Just to give your dad a pro tip on topdressing. I have worked at a high end course here in Canada and u can spread that wet sand using a shovel onto the green. We do that sometimes in the spring when things are too soft for the topdresser. Do it on a sunny day and sand will dry in s short time. Like one hour or less. Then use a push broom to run accross the green to work it into topdressing holes
Love the content! Hopefully with all this new equipment and knowledge we'll start to see a new green set up. Also would love, the idea to get one of those pontoons out in the middle of the pond and attempt to hit to it from all of the tee box's.
I agree 9-10 is the sweet spot for green speed, although green speed and green slope have to be considered together! A 10 on a severely sloping green could get dicey. Great video!
This channel is for all the turf-heads. I work at golf course in Gilbertsville PA. (Hickory Valley golf club) We have 2 separate courses . Only 8 guys take care of the 36 holes. So after a long long long day. I come home click on this channel and laugh my ass off. Thanks guys!! Keep the vidz coming and Scuba Steve Great hole in one. Maybe your boy will get one someday lol
Stimpmeters are great for a greens keeper to measure and compare multiple greens on one site. A lot of courses strive for consistency over speed. Speed is no good if one green is rolling a 12 and the next is rolling a 8. The other problem comes up when members start comparing greens from 2 different courses on 2 different days. Many variables come into play on a golf course case in point the results from this video. I would recommend taking readings of your green and logging them these readings can also show a lot about the health of the green over time. Fun videos great work.
Yo Randito. Hope all is well. I worked on a top notch course for a few seasons, and we never top dressed prior to rolling. Top dressing was only done when maintenance was performed, i.e. verticuts, punching holes, or spot fixes. I know you're probably getting all kinds of opinions on this. Good luck, sir.
You guys have done a great job, now it's time to expand the course and add 2 more holes lol. You should do a giveaway and pick a lucky winner to come up and play a round with you guys.
Awesome Randy. Question for ya, is managing a green making you a better putter? Understanding the process, the grain direction, water flow, sanding, rolling, etc?
Randy how is you are the lest favorite person on your own channel ??? scuba steve ,Quinton, your kids and a stranger walking past in the background all would get more likes than yourself!!! its a gift man and i for one love you for it!!!!
I don't get it...how do u guys not have 3 million subscribers? Funny, entertaining, creative, educational...etc, it checks all the boxes. I'm glad I found this channel, glad I subscribed, and will share the hell out of your videos. Netflix will pretty much put a show out about anything, and 3/4ths of them are crap. I think your, "The Golf Shop" segments have the potential to be a successful series, like The Office, only in a pro shop or sporting goods store..i sure as hell would invest in it. I think its something people would watch and love. Not to mention require undergarment protection too..cause I about pissed myself laughing a few times. I wish y'all much success. Keep em coming.
Exactly this! :) Be awesome to see "The Golf Shop" as a mini series! So much creativity and true content creation on this channel! Makes me angry to see some channels with millions of subscribers doing literally nothing except "reacting to" someone else's content... :(
having a device release the ball is potentially more consistent because of the consistent friction and release parameters (so to speak). Your finger could be sticky and pull the ball or add spin to it. Just chalk your finger or wear a cloth glove.
Interesting stuff. I wonder what the stimpmeter reading would be on my practice carpet at home compared to down at my local club greens. I read somewhere stimp readings for Augusta are up around 15? That might be rubbish though? Great vid, entertaining as usual! Thanks.
Randy, very informative episode, thanks! it has been over a year since you did a fan mail video. Can you do a new one soon? They are truly entertaining.
I have some suggestions. I worked on a few golf courses under different superintendents. You should brush the sand in then water it. Wait until the next day or later to run the roller after a mow. Brushing the sand in can damage the blades so you can try just watering the sand in.
Please more videos like this. I love seeing this part of golf. Being that I am a bit of a landscape and DIY nut who just happens to golf. This stuff is great. Also, built m own stimpmeter to keep in the bag.....Hhahaha No seriously you should do a whole video series on the building of the "back 9" including the par 4. I have some property and would love to do something like this.
If you guys want a little tip to get even more speed. Mow and roll the same day. When you roll make sure you roll really slow and that will help speed them up. The golf course I work at we mow everyday and roll about four times a week and our greens read about an 11 everyday!
I work at a golf course, we verti cut on average every other week. Sometimes more sometimes less just depends on the grow season. Anyways, may wanna consider it. Great videos btw
Just out of curiosity, why do you roll the green after you top dress. I work at a country club in Tennessee and we either brush our sand in or water it in. Here lately due to heat and such we brush it in and then spot water.
Nick we brushed it in then rolled it due to the fact the roller was a new toy,as you can see we rolled it way to much. Since the video I cut it once then roll it the next 2 days then cut it again.
I would be curious to see how your stimpmeter matched up against one at a local course. You could take your rig to test. Because $4 for a post and a little sweat of a DIY project is a lot more fun. Love your content
I'd love to see what Riverbend rolls at. Just about anytime I play there, it feels like glass. And compare to Cherry Hill, which I think has pretty true green speed.
Guys, you probably don't know but those mowers are designed to cut best at wide open throttle. It takes some getting used to at first (you feel like you're almost jogging) but you'll cut straighter and it will cut better as well.
Have you thought about angular momentum(rotational inertia) of the ball? That rail does not look like a pure 90. Will It will touch that ball at a different location and cause the ball to spin faster or slower than a pure 90?
You guys have done an amazing job l. I just wish (and im sure you too) that the whole green didnt slope, because you guys have it healthy and fast. Maybe next year try to level it out a bit?
Just so you know, there is a way to calculate the stimp rating of a sloped green that isn't just averaging out all the numbers. Also I'd be curious to know how close your ball speed is to the ball speed of an actual stimpmeter.
At the golf course I work at we had people come and test ours and they could only read 2 holes out practice green and number 1 and the practice green was 13 and #1 was almost at 14
"except the we part". Priceless.
TH-cam recommended your channel to me . I've never golfed in my life my but ended up staying for scuba Steve! Y'all have a great relationship
Thanks for stoppin' by!
enjoyed the father son relationship part
Your dad is the whole reason I watch you had good content but he puts it over the top

Showing them how to do it in the good old Midwest USA. Love your videos.

Awesome project. Also- love the musical nod to Golfsidekick @11:50 ! LOL

Golf Sidekick oh I knew you were gonna have a nod to that song every golfer knows that song

Thanks, Kyle… sorry to hear about your pops. Appreciate you hanging out with us. 👍
That neck hair touch had me dying
This and the green roller video are maybe my favorite you’ve ever done. Laugh out loud moments 👍
Thanks, Nick!
I've had great results dragging the sand in with a terra broom mow off then roll. Mower will need adjustment after.

Fantastic vlog, Randy! And the 75 cents (popcorn) reference at the very end was a hilarious ad-lib!

10 is a great public course! Only a few Nashville public courses could boast that type of roll. Yall are living my dream! Lol
🙏
At 7:03, by the grace of the music, you are suddenly transported into a Golf Sidekick video…
Whaddastimpmeter
THAT WAS PRETTY COOL!! NICE TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH YOUR DAD THAT YOUR BOTH PASSIONATE ABOUT!

Very cool & informative vid. Great job fellas!
R.I.P. Magic Hills. I miss my midnight Friday night tee times.
So much fun. Please don't stop!
How about resting, is resting ok?
Roll the green 10 times and then read it on the stimpmeter
Love seeing a Father and Son both be so passionate about something. Great stuff guys!

This may have been about making and using a stimpmeter to find out what the Green played at, but the entertainment meter has and is as always at 100!
🙏
Great video thanks for sharing. I wonder how much sand contributes to the speed.
My course, South Bend Country Club, rolls around a 12. Downhill putts are insane.
A 10 is perfect in my book. Not too slow and not too fast. Great job guys!
👍

I wish you guys posted more often. I love all your videos. Can’t wait for the next one.
I love it when you try to being logical with a man that brought an "extra" clean ball to the putting green, so he could then clean the dirty ball!
Like teaching long division to a hamster.
Is that the golfsidekick bogey music at 7:15??
You guys have done a great job, now it's time to expand the course and add 2 more holes lol. You should do a giveaway and pick a lucky winner to come up and play a round with you guys.
Awesome Randy. Question for ya, is managing a green making you a better putter? Understanding the process, the grain direction, water flow, sanding, rolling, etc?
My dad is the primary greenskeeper... and yes, he is putting the best he's ever putted.
Awesome video. DIY stuff is so fun.
Thanks, James!
The width of the track rails should be 1/2" any difference may affect ball speed.
Randy how is you are the lest favorite person on your own channel ??? scuba steve ,Quinton, your kids and a stranger walking past in the background all would get more likes than yourself!!! its a gift man and i for one love you for it!!!!
It takes years of training.

Thanks, Morris!
Does scuba steve use chest (or back) hair to check wind direction?
Probably.
Great video Randy and Scuba Steve! Golf & Science! p.s. paint that stimpmeter your Vikings colors 😜👍
Interesting stuff. I wonder what the stimpmeter reading would be on my practice carpet at home compared to down at my local club greens. I read somewhere stimp readings for Augusta are up around 15? That might be rubbish though? Great vid, entertaining as usual! Thanks.

Loved this video. Even lead something. Great experiment guys. Scuba Steve does great work for he’s green.
@friedeggsgolf, how do you guys water the greens? Sprinklers irrigation system? Mother nature?
My dad puts out a sprinkler... and Mother Nature
Dad hand waters most of it
The face your dad is making as you're explaining the stimpmeter reminds me of every time I have to sit through a lecture in physics class
🤣😂🤣
Randy, very informative episode, thanks!
it has been over a year since you did a fan mail video. Can you do a new one soon? They are truly entertaining.
Who should we write to?
Fried Eggs Golf write to Matt Kuchar.
😬
This should be a new segment...shop class with Scuba Steve!
you should do a: "how fast can we make the green and then play a round"- video
.
It would be a NIGHTMARE!
@@FriedEggsGolf but sick content
DO IT
Awesome! somewhere between Forged in Fire and Mythbuster + golf!
🙏
You guys could put a small plumb bob at the end of the stimp meter with a mark for 20 degrees. That way it creates it's own level.
Burn Luddite... burn. :(
😃😃😃
Great video lads and well done for making your own stimp reader, if you dewy cut go up and down the same strip you will pick up speed then roll it.
I have some suggestions. I worked on a few golf courses under different superintendents. You should brush the sand in then water it. Wait until the next day or later to run the roller after a mow. Brushing the sand in can damage the blades so you can try just watering the sand in.
This vid is class. Love this stuff. Would be so interesting to do further maths on it and see how accurate those readings are!
I made a stimp question on the last video. Thanks guys. Very cool. Keep up the good content. Scooba is my hero.
Thank you, Joe!
wow. i learned a lot. got a putting mat but the real green in my course is crazy fast, my practice is almost useless
Please more videos like this. I love seeing this part of golf. Being that I am a bit of a landscape and DIY nut who just happens to golf. This stuff is great. Great video, I think this will get a lot of views like your green roller one. I think Scuba Steve is due to be sheared for the summer, though!
💇🏻♂️
Our greens at the golf course I caddy at are 13.5
😳
I LEARNED HOW A STIMPMETER WORKS TODAY , AND MORE IMPORTANT WHAT THE DAMN THING LOOKS LIKE! YOU GUYS ARE WONDERFUL!LOVE THE CHANNEL DUDE!!!!!
when you rolled the greens 3 times it was easily a 16 on the stimp. Augusta when the Masters is in town is a 16.5,
If you guys want a little tip to get even more speed. Mow and roll the same day. When you roll make sure you roll really slow and that will help speed them up. The golf course I work at we mow everyday and roll about four times a week and our greens read about an 11 everyday!

You're like a mix between Will Hunting and Bob Villa. Very informative!
Scuba Steve = Tim Taylor

Tryin’ to get me rollin’ dirty....
Great Vlog learned something new. Cheers Randy & Scuba Steve

I work at a golf course, we verti cut on average every other week. Sometimes more sometimes less just depends on the grow season. Anyways, may wanna consider it. Great videos btw
Thanks for the tip, appreciate it!
Did Scuba Steve work at Dana Ft. Wayne Axle plant? Loved the sticker on the tool box! Great video.
Actually he worked at Dana in Syracuse, IN for 30+ years.
My dad did 30 yrs at the Fort Wayne plant.
Just out of curiosity, why do you roll the green after you top dress. I work at a country club in Tennessee and we either brush our sand in or water it in. Here lately due to heat and such we brush it in and then spot water.

Great video Randy. Love your videos
The best golf channel out there, I love these vids 👍
So when are we going to see a floating green, like that one in Idaho?
Float that pontoon boat out there and stick a flag on it.
What kind of sand do you use on the green. Love the videos!
The gritty kind.
100% sand at your local gravel pit
I would be curious to see how your stimpmeter matched up against one at a local course. You could take your rig to test. Because $4 for a post and a little sweat of a DIY project is a lot more fun. Love your content

Great video! Keep them coming
Thanks, Douglas!
What kind of turf is the green?
Golfsidekick music on Fried Eggs Golf??? My 2 favorite channels are merging!
I'd love to see what Riverbend rolls at. Just about anytime I play there, it feels like glass. And compare to Cherry Hill, which I think has pretty true green speed.
Not sure, but they always seem fast!
@@FriedEggsGolf Let's get with Tom this weekend and figure it out. Then play a round! :D
I agree. Riverbend's greens are slick. Colonial Oaks are lumpy and slow. Eel River has pretty true speed as well.
when is is set in the ground set the meassure 12,31 inches from top to grass. that is how you make sure it is correctly 20 degrees.
Great vlog fellas, love your videos scuba Steve is brilliant 👌🏌️♂️👍
Thanks, Paul!
Qualified GreenKeeper here, we used to make all our own stimpmeters. You done a great job
Thanks, Milo!
Randy, I’m curious about the speed of Riverbend’s greens after the cut and roll them. They have to be 11-12
I would say they’re pretty darn close.
Really enjoyed it guys! 👍🏻

the private club i work at roll around 10.5-11 on the stimp
Have you thought about angular momentum(rotational inertia) of the ball? That rail does not look like a pure 90. Will It will touch that ball at a different location and cause the ball to spin faster or slower than a pure 90?
Great question, Jerome. Definitely something to consider.
You guys have done an amazing job l. I just wish (and im sure you too) that the whole green didnt slope, because you guys have it healthy and fast. Maybe next year try to level it out a bit?
That would be a certian doom for the green!
Just so you know, there is a way to calculate the stimp rating of a sloped green that isn't just averaging out all the numbers. Also I'd be curious to know how close your ball speed is to the ball speed of an actual stimpmeter.
The original was probably a yard stick which explains 36"
I’ve never even touched a golf club in my life and I have no intention of doing it. But I watch every darn episode. WWHHYYYYYY
Because you’re a sick sick man.
Awesome video Randy. Did you played when you rolled the green on last video?
No, we could barely walk on it, it was so fast!
Oh ok! Looking forward for the next video with you guys playing after rolling the green. I truly enjoy watching the videos!
As a fellow neck hair guy playing golf I appreciated this video a lot. Tank tops for life!
Let it flow.
Nice job guys, great video.
