  • Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina: Tribularer si nescirem 6vv
    (Motettorum liber secundus, 1572)
    Magnificat
    Philip Cave
    Score: www.cpdl.org (Pothárn Imre)
Performed a tone below written pitch.
Tribularer, si nescirem misericordias tuas, Domine.
    Tu dixisti: nolo mortem peccatoris,
sed ut magis convertatur et vivat.
Qui Cananaeam et publicanum vocasti ad poenitentiam.
Secundum multitudinem dolorum meorum in corde meo,
    consolationes tuae laetificaverunt animam meam.
Qui Cananaeam et publicanum vocasti ad poenitentiam.
    === ENGLISH ===
I should be in distress if I knew not your mercies, Lord.
You have said: I desire not the death of a sinner,
but that rather he should turn from his ways and live.
You who called the Canaanite woman and the publican to repentance.
No matter how great the multitude of sorrows in my heart,
your consolations have given joy to my soul.
You who called the Canaanite woman and the publican to repentance.

Does anyone know why this piece is so monumental in scope and profoundly expressive in its composition? What would have been the liturgical occasion? Extraordinary, even for Palestrina.

The fact that this music no longer regularly adorns the sacred liturgy - not only due to intellectual neglect, but even more due to liturgical devastation - is the practical equivalent of some philistine's stealing all the great works of art and hiding them away, what a crime.
