  • The GWR opened a branch from Millbay to Yealmpton in January 1898. Originally planned to terminate at Modbury, the line served the villages of Plymstock, Billacombe, Elburton and Brixton. It stopped at Steer Point where ferries would take passengers across the river to the villages of Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers.
The film uses photographs and aerial photography together with simulated movie footage to plot the journey through some of the most beautiful countryside in the South Hams. The railway is rich in historical experiences and this film will invoke memories of the old line in those who remember it and educate those who don’t.
Based on the book by Plymouth author, Anthony Kingdom, this unique documentary has arisen due to the extended nature of its companion film ‘The Plymouth to Turnchapel and Cattewater Railways’ originally intended tobe 30 minutes long, but ended up as a 50 minute film. Therefore, a seperate account of the Yealmpton branch has been documented.
This video is in the original format, I am working on an updated version for the future.

I did a weekend on the line back in 2009 at the Steam Steel and Stars event, saving up towards the Grange. Dearest Wife was back in China with our Daughter.
    Loved the extension, thank you.

    Thank-you!
Whether this can be described as progress, I doubt

Thank you so much for posting this wonderful film. I was particularly interested in the narrative about the trains that carried children on their way to Mr.Lane’s tea field at Torr. Mr Lane was my wife’s grandfather. I have fond memories of them recalling the days when he and his wife served cream teas to the Sunday school parties arriving by train at Yealmpton.

Fantastic video. Amazingly around 80% of the route and trackbed is still there and I've recently walked the entire route (2023) although some parts are private and difficult to access but it's all there and depends on your level of daring.
One of the highlights that's easy to get to is Steer Point Station where the platform mound is still there including some of the railings.

Interesting film. One minor thing - Yealm is pronounced Yam, at least by the people born and bred there, and likewise Yealmpton is pronounced Yamton.

Thank you. I know Dad did like to use the local pronunciations, but he must have missed this one.
