- I think the Dora is misunderstood. It's not a great dogfighter, but that doesn't mean it can't be highly effective in air to air combat on a multiplayer server.
This video will explain how to take advantage of the Dora's strengths and avoid its weaknesses. To prove my point I'll take it out on a multiplayer server (Wolfpack Normandy) and fly all over the map. I get 10 kills and no losses against a variety of human and AI opponents.

I remember playing European Air War and the radio call would come over saying "Long--nosed 190s" when a Dora was spotted. Good times.

I just found it in my old room in my parents house together with the original handbook. I was amazed how detailed the printed handbook was.
I luuuvd the Lang nassen Dora in Aces Over Europe (PC ,1992 by Dynamix) the bf109 k. Aces was the shit waaay back when. Be it over Europe or of the Pacific. The detail was Exquisite for the time and the dynamic styled campaign was awesome

My dad had this old game called European Air War from Microprose and it was probably my favorite video game to play as a kid. You could fly a lot of different airplanes on the German side or the British/American side. I didn't speak English at the time but I generally understood the German part so I'd always play the German side. The Fw190D was my favorite plane to use.
I still have that videogame, and the thick manual that came with it. Although my favorite was Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe.

Outstanding video as always. I have trialed the Dora twice the second time was after watching your previous DCS Dora vids, and I have to give you credit because it made a sizable difference. The Dora is the only WWII Warbird I want but do not own, currently available in the DCS sim. I have great respect for that airframe and the sim pilots that are deadly when flying the D9. I made a comment about it was a cabbage crate but that was in good fun to help my wounded ego after once again falling prey to yet another D9. Also thank you for the shout out to myself and my TH-cam channel but more importantly thank you for mentioning the Wolf Pack U.S. Dynamic Base Capture Normandy server. Our visitors and soon to follow regulars come by the droves every time you mention it. And if I may add a big ole Texas thank you to GR00VYJERRY for creating the mission and Palerider37 and his team for hosting and maintaining the server. I hope to see you there again soon.

I have read and watched endlessly on how to dog fight and even had a few very good sim fighter pilot try to teach me directly , but suspect I am missing the part of the brain that is for aerial combat. The Dora is probably my favorite plane to get shot down in though. It has the balance of characteristics that appeal to my sense of what makes a good late war fighter.
Have you tried practicing shooting down ai's in defenceless planes? I found that i couldnt do anything constructive, till i decided to set up a formation of dc3's and go chase them down in a zero and get them, it seemed to help my gunnery alot, then i upgraded to chasing down unarmed brewster buffalos. Then i tried one on ones with buffalos that had guns that worked. Im still not awesome or anything but it went from a waste of time trying, to being able to actually do something
@@Colt45hatchback Tried everything for about two years. I had well over 2000 hours in IL2 but only was ever effective in ground attack. My niche seemed to be tag teaming AAA. I could also be hard to shoot down in particularly slow aircraft like the Hs-129. I read every book on fighter maneuvers and tactics ever mentioned on this channel, usually multiple times. I was diagnosed as mildly autistic 47 years ago (before it was trendy;-)) maybe that has something to do with it. I dunno. Anyway, in real life I went into infantry where my aerial combat talent was never an issue, so all is well that ends well, I guess.
@@vicnighthorse oh, i see whats up i think, are you having trouble visualising your maneuvers in a 3d space? Perhaps playing an rc plane game, where you are watching the aircraft from quite far away, where you can see the whole scenario play out at once would help? I have a friend with a similar issue, he loses situational awareness easily and becomes focused on a specific thing which may not be the most important thing to be focused on at the time. Just a thought :)
@@Colt45hatchback It has been a couple years since I gave up, but I do think 3d situational awareness was a big part of it. I did better in Naval Action with the exception not be good at complex and rapid key-stroking. I could at least grasp the tactics and be an average player on that 2d battle field. Thanks.
And again I agree with all statements, especially about high speed climb - Dora has more drag compared to Mustang, but they have close max speeds, meanwhile Dora has better power/weight ratio and it accelerates much faster above 400-450km/h, where P-51 starts slowly approach it's maximum speed. Just a few people mentioned this useful detail.
A little addition - there are 3 types of failures in DCS:
1) Planned - you can set them in editor
2) Random - can be turned on/off in settings - game options. Such failures have very liw chance, about tenths of percent, and even less.
3) Battle damages. WW2 props in DCS got a huge amount of such failures, much more than we can find in editor.
I'm not one for dogfight sims however with Greg in the cockpit, I'm boarding this flight!
Id love to see you do more of these gameplay videos. you can breakdown your movements and thought processes so well.
Greg, appreciate your work . Over seas and, destitute and unable to contribute now. I wanted to just throw this out there. The D9 was always called the "downstairs Dora by it's pilots, for exactly the reasons you explained.I mentioned that decades ago in a flight sim and was shut down . But the thing I know I read in my first edition of " le Grande Circque " (?) By Pierre Clostermann in his Tempest, was getting shot down late in the war by what who was post war later ID'd as a German Ace named " Dortmund", in a D 9, In the un abridged non US version. TheTempest, like the D 9 was designated a "tactical fighter. " The Tempests had the perfomance at medium and low level to be given those tasks. Many of CLostermann's late war andecotes are a direct mirror of that tactical fighter role and the D9's were his bane. But 9 out of ten a D 9 was in the hands of a flegdeling, D 9's lost more pilots to landings and take offs than to enemy action . The story as translated from French in CLostermann's unabridged "Le Grande Cirque" as I can remember reading my copy, Dortmund and another D 9 had blown thru them and took out two, of the flight, CLostermann went vertical up after him, His fellow pilots gave him the works after he got home ,for after his radio calls. "I've got him,.......I've got him,"..... then Clostermann ran out of airspeed and ideas.The D9 did at the same time, biding his time, and fell down upon him, lined up and fired ,and Clostermann took to his chute :) The D( then took the time to "buzz" his chute . Allegedly Hans_Dortenmann, If I have the language spelling right, had about 33 kills on the Western Front and lived to the end of the war. But then my favorite was CLostermann in a his Tempest, beset by abou 6 F190 D9 with glowing exhausts, and Clostermann," For the first time I put the throttle thru the breaking wire,and left them panting . It's a great book, but try to get the unabridged version, not the US pirinted one. The man had anti war, anti US feelings. Mainly becuase he saw a coastal Normandy French city get ravaged and carpet bombed in the prelude to D Day. Later in our time he voiced his admiration for the Argentinian pilot's courage during the 1982 Falklands War. The kicker about WW2 I like to understand is the Tempests were tasked with low - med level Tactical missions in the NW . Yeager for example in a P51D shot down a number of D'9's flown by kids at 20'000 feet. It's never so much the airplane as the tactical situation and the training of that fellow we put there. Apologize in advance for typing errors, having a few brown outs here and with the typhoon passing didn't help

I have a huge crush on this aircraft when flying PvP in either IL2 or DCS. This thing is a monster when flown right, with the high speed climb being the jewel in her crown - most people don't realize how tactically significant being able to gain separation AND altitude from almost anything really is. It resets fights, allows her to solo if your SA is good, and gives you plenty of downhill in a pinch to use her incredible high speed roll and pitch advantages if the bandit really wants to party.

Great job Greg, a pleasure to watch your business like approach to fighting the Dora. It’s always been my favorite German fighter especially after watching your series on the 190. I for one would like to see more of this. You and the “valued presenters” at Grim Reaper are my favorite aviation channel but they don’t have any Alfa/Fiat content.
Yeah, those Grim Reaper guys fly pretty well, but I suspect the drive Subarus.

I recorded this at home. Our guard dog takes here job really seriously and barks whenever something approaches the house.
Greg would not last long in a real dogfight (he thinks way too much. that is what Boffins do)...however I am sure he is a terror in computer games. Love all his great videos.

Got to see a Dora-9 for the first time at the USAF Museum today! Figured I'd fact check your alleged lack of P-39 memorial and sure enough, while they have an Airacobra in the museum I didn't see anything outside.

I haven't played a flight sim in over a year, always felt a bit overwhelmed by them, and never did multiplayer except in non-sims like War Thunder. And yet I just killed an hour watching this video before I knew what had happened. Great presentation and narration job!

The Guinea pig club as they called them selves, we're the badly burnt patients of pioneering New Zealand surgeon working in the UK . Archives McIndoe he was invited by older cousin who had also pioneered burn treatment but during the Great War after the naval battle of Jutland.
There are a lot of great youtubers doing DCS content, but Greg's videos are a level above... great work!

Hi Greg. Excellent video! I'm flying the Dora for quite a while now in DCS, but only now I'm able to exploid the aircraft to it's full extend. I usually fly on the 4YA WW2 server, where some of the best WW2 Sim pilots out there come together. You really have to master an airframe to utilize its full strength to get the edge there. Maybe you'll have a look around, would be a pleasure. 👍
Just in addition: as I can remember, one of the Devs stated in a Forum that the Dora has the best energy retention of all WW2 aircrafts in DCS which makes it the ultimate BnZ aircraft.
Another superb video, thanks Greg. As to the red and pinstripe underside - I dimly remember reading that some Dora squadrons were stationed on or near 262 bases, specifically to provide top cover for 262s on their terribly long and vulnerable approaches and finals. Since the 262's flew their approaches between lines of flak emplacements, any German escorts were at risk, and the 190 was supposed to look a bit like a P51 - hence the red and stripe ventral paintjob.
It's the Stab paint job, just the squadron leaders livery. Thats all.
Oh I think I aquired some new knowledge that I might be able to use when playing War Thunder planes :3
Fantastic video with tons of useful information. Personally I can't understand those people who criticise use of zoom and padlock functions in sims... for me these capabilities are there to compensate for the limitations that are unavoidable with a sim. Similarly I don't understand people who don't appreciate realistic and effective tactics!
Sim pilots get pretty fussy about all kinds of things that make 'hi-fi' sims more accessible to the greater community. In general, I'm all for aids that allow people to play comfortably, whether it's padlock, zoom, VR check six assist (a bunch of us are old and have messed up necks but love VR), or playing with distant visual signatures to make contacts slightly more visible (which both DCS and IL2 have done, for good reason I think).
We always need more pilots, DCS isn't like Call of Duty where all servers are populated all the time - devs should maximize these quality of life enhancements while still modeling realistic aircraft/physics.

I used to fly the Bf109 in a simulator. It was a great energy fighter and had a good turn rate. Climbing faster meant that you could engage and disengage at will: 1. Find target. 2. Boom and zoom. 3. Success.

I greatly appreciate your DCS videos. Well I greatly appreciate all your videos but the DCS videos are information that I can apply and enjoy whereas most of your technical breakdowns of aircraft go way over my head. Which is not to say I don't watch every one of them. I did a trial for the Dora and was about ready to say it's not worth my money because I I could not get the performance out of it that I expected. I just recently got into the warbirds after mainly flying f-16s and I find that I'm spending most of my time in World War II servers now because while it does take a very long time there's something very satisfying about all that you need to account for. I realize that I'm mainly operating weapon systems in the modern jets versus flying the aircraft and managing its engine. Plus having to find your targets both in the air and the ground by eyeball has made me a better pilot in the jets as well. Thank you for all that efforts you put into this channel

Hi Greg, will have an eye on the Doras on this server, maybe I will see you there. I also fly there sometimes. Guess your name in DCS is also Greg? Personally I had most success with the Bf109. Also recently in one sortie I shot down two low flying Mosquitos and a Spitfire with the Fw190A8 and made it home. Was a bit surprised I survived that. Doing Blitz-Attacks really helped.

Ive always had issues flying the dora. Hopefully this helps me fly the wonderful plane.
This situation @55:45 with ASI could be due to blocked pitot line due to damage or ice. ASI measures difference between total (dynamic + static) and static pressure and at altitude static pressure is lesser than at ground level. If you have blocked pitot tube, with rising static pressure from static port you are getting lesser and lesser difference between these two and therefore smaller ASI indication i.e. your ASI becomes altimeter.
Damage maybe, but not ice in this case. Also, watch how fast it fell. If it was acting as an altimeter due to a blockage it wouldn't move that fast when descending 200 meters. Good thinking though. I like these types of comments.

That's exactly right, it's very complex, and they constantly revise and update it, so in my view the best way is to treat the plane's systems like it's the real deal.
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles well, every time I sit in a real plane I stop flying sims afterwards till the end of the flying season (general aviation activities, panoramic flights and etc). Why is that? Airplanes IRL fly nicer and more stable. But I admit I use props in DCS during the winter, DCS is really good with flying realism. 👌

A detail I'd like to comment about. I see, besides other management you perform like Revi and so, don't you manage fuel also? I mean, apparently it's historical pilots emptied the rear fuel tank first in order to get a better AoA and add some nimbleness to the aircraft. In DCS it can definitely be felt how once your rear fuel tank is empty the aircraft is quite more responsive and sneaky (not sure that's the word I'm looking for but). Have you tried it? Maybe you don't like how handling becomes that way? I'd like to know your opinion about that, if you've tried and all of course.
I like to feed from both tanks to have one less thing to think about. However draining the FRONT tank first will move your CG aft, which will lower stall speed and improve turn performance at the expense of stability. Draining the rear tank first will make the plane more stable. There is no wrong answer here, fly it the way it suits you the best.
Imma just an old gumshoe who brings his broom to the streets of the Big Boss Basin (L.A.) so I'll share: When Greg introduced me to the crimes of Bomber Command I felt a deep rage welling up. My dad learned to drink surreptitiously over a Norden bombsight so I've got that "we're all gonna die" thing going for 70 years. Can Do! The deeper I fell into the egos and mustauches the madder I got and I let it go except for YT comments to stupid WWII mythology. Someone write that book, please. So I let the Bomber Command case go and I did not realize that I had inadvertently amassed enormous research strategies. I felt like frikkin Ike. Pre-dawn in the dark morning I'm applying Bomber Command strategies to songwriting. Ya never know. I learned to respectfully poke a bunch of little fuzzy ol' bears which really brings on an interesting lot. My mind is utilizing WWII imagery to interpret strategic theoreoms. WWII Warbirds, yet another infinity. After the Sabre'n'MiGs I stopped caring.
Greg I don't even play in DCS, but if I did I would seek you out over Normandy in my Hawker Tempest, fly over your base and cast a gauntlet down, challenging you a one on one combat. No quarter would be asked, and no quarter would be given! 😀

Thanks. The 109K4 is awesome, it's far more popular than the Dora in multiplayer. However I like the Dora for "hunting", it's more responsive at very high speeds seen in diving ambush style attacks, and I like it's gyro sight and weapons for that style of attack. I'm sure your right about the pronunciation.
That first P-51 was clearly a kill steal.
How do you figure? The P-51 was behind and shooting at the 109.
Just bought Fw-190D9 on last sale. Like this bird so much for its speed, cockpit visibility and climb rate as well as armament. My DCS Warbird fleet is quite big: Spit IX, P-51D, Bf-109k4 and now Fw-190D9 too. I skipped P-47 as I am going to skip F6f too. Waiting for Corsair. I love fast warbirds and Boom and Zoom tactics.
That's great to hear, I'm excited about the Corsair as well. I'm about to upgrade my sim set up by more or less copying Juice from Air Warfare Group.
"cabbage crates" is a monty python reference from the "woody and tinny words sketch," part of which poked fun at wwii RAF slang. so it just means german aircraft. with some imagination the pythons maybe were referring to sauerkraut.

Thanks. Judging by your username I think you would like my car videos. I have the fastest Fiat 124 (new type) with the 1.4 multiair engine in the world that I know of, also the fastest 2.0 Giulia. Anyway, I like the 4th gen stuff too, I fly the F-14 a bit, but the WW2 stuff is more fun in multiplayer.
@@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles I haven't dared to try multiplayer yet. I've been flying the F-5E and F-14B. Mostly been doing touch-and-goes, carrier landings, and aerial refueling. I'm just learning how to handle the airplane and fly intercepts without ripping the wings off. I'm really enjoying it. Trying to learn on the non-FBW aircraft to not develop bad habits, and because the Tomcat is the coolest plane ever made.
I've checked out some of your Fiata videos and it's fun to see what some boost can do. I currently have a NC Miata with a 2.5 engine swap that I take to track days, and a 93 RX-7 taking up space in my driveway.
I really appreciated your video on WWII turbo vs superchargers at altitude. Makes me want to turbocharge my tow vehicle to climb mountains a little better. 😂I love your in-depth content. Keep up the good work. 👍

Hi Greg, Somehow, lonewolf style is not so inaccurate for D9. I beleive you read the Big Show and there, P.Clostermann is very specific on how he met a lone D9 and lost his two wingmens to it and then failed to chase him.
Very true, lone wolf style certainly happened, especially as during the chaos of battle planes would get separated and find themselves alone heading back to base, but it wasn't the norm and not normally part of the plan.

Greg, Sir: Everytime you bust a horrible dusty stupid WWII myth I go all over YT shooting my comments back. You get me into a lot of trouble and I can only imagine the feedback you get, I'm sure it takes 1.3 seconds to spot the discards. I report the crimes of Bomber Command in an articulate and respectful way (for example I don't use certain words like "crimes") and hoo-boy does the fur fly. Hi Greg, I really like your videos, they bring a lot of information. However, DCS is not 100% faithful, I believe that the D-9 is very weakened by the data available on the internet. In DCS, the P-51 is faster than the D-9 at any altitude without needing to use WEP. The P-51 climbs more than the D-9 at any altitude too. The D-9 only wins in descent. Another thing I noticed was that the WEP of the P-51 lasts much longer than 5min. I would like you to do these tests too and confirm if I am correct.
I'm not sure it's possible to be 100 percent accurate with all the variations in testing, and this is especially true with the Dora as the test results for that plane are all over the place. I don't have the P-51 module so I can't test it at the moment, but I do find that the Dora's performance with MW50 seems about right. I do know that the P-47's dive performance isn't really right, but they keep making things more and more accurate with every revision, where IL2 seems to be going the other direction.
The problem is in most servers German planes have no MW50 and it makes them not very competitive against allies.
Usually only for K4s. I'm not aware of any server that would disable MW50 for Dora.

This is exactly the problem and is THE reason I started flying on the Wolf Pack server. At the time it was the ONLY sever that allowed Doras to use MW50 and start from forward airfields. There is no point in flying the Dora without MW50, it's dead meat without it.
I think the reason why they always detect you when you come from low six is that both P51 and P47 has a tail warning radar. So it probably goes off and they break.
What radar on the Dora do you suggest they detect?
@@mytube001 you don't understand. The 51 and 47 have a radar in their tail, that detects the presence of aircraft behind them.
I don't think any European theater 47 or 51 had that, although the did very late in the Pacific, at least the 47 did. mytube, he is talking about an actual radar unit in the tail of the plane, not a system that detects radar like in never jets.

56:30 I’ve gotten icing on the pitot tube icing on the 109 before. Could be that??? Would make sense for how it was acting, but doesn’t look like you were near any clouds and it should have been plenty warm down low

Hey Greg, I never heard of detailed g limits on aircraft armaments. Do you have sources for that, I am highly interested. Of course I heard that cannons could jam under excessive Gs, but were there limits listed in the pilots manuals? Best regards
I don't think they are listed in the pilot's manual, although they are in German and I don't think I have every manual ever written for the plane. That said, I did check the limits in DCS and that's what they are in DCS. That wasn't uncommon, the P-51B was famous for gun jams if firing while at high G.
It's my understanding only four Dora's got this red paint/white stripes, a local variation.
The only reason i don't like the dora as much as the others is because of the sound, it really needs an update on it's sound

I am not a flyer on simulators, but have flown RC planes lol. What about flying inverted to take a look back to your low 6 if you know you are being stalked? Like the guy that called your plane a cabbage crate, what if he would have flown inverted to check his low 6 from time to time, is that a valid maneuver?
Sure it's valid, but you can't fly inverted for long, these planes don't have inverted fuel and oil and are limited to a couple second that way, but yes, you can roll over and look back. It's largely a question of timing, I'm trying to get in there in between the times they look back.

Wasn’t your fighting philosophy for the Dora how Eric Hartmann got to 352 in his ME-109s? “See, decide, attack, break-away” is how I think he put it.
He would also only open fire at extremely close range, something he learned from Walter "Graf" Krupinski, who was credited with 197 aerial victories.
