The theory is simple: impart the exact reverse spin onto the ball. Do whatever to achieve that. The challenge is to read the spin and react quickly enough. Long services are always dealt with with lipse. Lipse can be side up, not just top spin.
Once you move up to a higher level, you learn to use your opponents’ spin to your advantage.
There are hints on reading spin. Depending on where the ball touches the bat will cause spin or no spin. The closer touch to the handle, the less spin.
