  • Are you looking for an Akita Puppy? Have you searched google for Akita breeders near you or looked on the AKC puppy marketplace?
What if I told you that those are the WORST ways to find a great Akita puppy? In this video we are going to go over not only how to find a great Akita breeder, but what questions you should be asking them, and what dog breeder red flags to look out for.
This isn't an exhaustive list, so always be on the look out for anything that doesn't seem right to you!
DISCLAIMER: For those of you watching who already own an Akita, if your breeder fits into any of the things listed in the video, it's not a personal critique of you as an owner. Many people simply do not know what to look for when shopping for a puppy. It does not mean your Akita isn't an amazing dog, however our goal at the Akita Life is to promote the health and safety of the Akita breed. One of the best ways to keep Akitas out of shelters and rescues is by helping people make the best decisions possible when bringing home a new dog!

Thank you for the great info! I bought an Akita mix from someone I knew at the beginning of this year (mom got loose and ended up pregnant). He was only charging rehoming fees so that he could pay to feed the pups and to get the mom fixed thankfully. She’s quite a mutt with Mini Akita Shepherd, Bull Mastiff, Heeler, and Rhodesian Ridgeback mixed in. But the Akita temperament definitely has shined through and I absolutely love the challenge but it also drives me crazy on how much smarter she is than me lol This breed is definitely not for the faint of heart and it makes so much sense why reputable breeders are the way to go! I’ve seen a few of my pups siblings in the shelter and it breaks my heart that such wonderful and intelligent pups didn’t get the family they deserved. This is probably one of the most challenging breeds I’ve ever owned, even my German shepherds in the past were mild in comparison. Im hoping one day I’ll have the space, time, and patience to buy from a reputable breeder because they are such amazing, loyal, and intelligent dogs ❤

Very good advice is given here. Too bad many will not follow it. I said almost exactly all the same stuff to a friend couple when they wanted a dog. They seemed to acknowledge why you shouldn't go to a backyard breeder/puppy mill when i talked about it with them... Few days later they went to a puppy mill anyway (one of the worst kinds that have like 50 different breeds) because they wanted the dog NOW and not wait for it, and they have the breed (Husky) we want available now bla bla bla... some people just don't give a f*ck... They have a lot of problems (health & behavioural) with that husky. And the icing on the cake is that they recently became parents and i already heard the guy mentioning getting rid of the dog... I was mad about that dog situation already but i swear, if they get rid of the dog they aren't my friends anymore.

I think you're spot on. People are impatient. They see a cute dog and they want it right away. I've also found that many people won't admit that they got their dog from a backyard breeder after they learn more about ethical breeding. Many people act as though they admit their dog is from an untechnical breeder that their dog isn't as deserving. Every dog deserves a loving home, but not every dog came from a loving breeder. it's strange that people have a hard time admitting it!

Great to see another Akita owner from the Granite State. I also live in NH and own a Japanese Akita Inu. They are now in the foundation status in AKC for US and CKC for Canada. There are not many JAI in the state and although my JAI will never get as big as an American Akita I'm sure their stubbornness is probably equal.

I've wanted an Akita since my parents showed me Ginga Nagareboshi Gin (an old anime with an Akita puppy as a protagonist) when I was 8, and I immediately fell in love with the breed upon seeing real-life pictures of it🥰
I am 19 now, but I'm planning on still waiting for another 10-20 years so I can ensure the dog will have a safe and stable living environment after I've completed the PhD I'm ultimately planning on, but I'm still doing active research on the breed so I can have all the information I need once I do get one😁
Recently, I have been considering becoming a breeder myself someday in the (VERY distant) future, but something I'm also interested in is a research career focusing on animal genealogy, behaviour and intelligence, and I'm not entirely sure if it would be exactly ethical to breed dogs while also studying them. Something I've also been wondering on is if breeding these dogs for specific traits (milder temperament and better genetic health are what my main focuses are) would fall under using the dogs as "lab rats", especially when they and their puppies would be taking part in various studies, some of which don't necessarily have anything to do with breeding and are more about getting a deeper understanding of dogs and how their genetics work in general😅

Commenting because potential new Akita owners really need to hear this. Also, Akitas aren’t ideal for households with little kids, no fenced in yard, or for people who have never had a dog, let along a headstrong and primitive dominant breed such as American Akita.

You have the best best channel on TH-cam. 2 years ago at Christmas we got a Akita. She is the best at home has been heavily socialized. But on leashed walks and or if I walk downtown to grab a bite to eat she can be a lot. I live in San Diego do you have any contacts here. She is great with people but when on leash she can create a scene. Luckily I am established in my community and other dog owners understand

Thank you so much! Our Akita is very similar. They are a guarding breed, so by nature when on leash they will be extra vigilant when with you. It just takes continued practice and patience. Don't be afraid to bring in a professional to help with that. I wish I had a recommendation for your area, but I'm on the east coast and don't know of any trainers in your neck of the woods!

If she continues to pull around take away her freedom every time she does it. That means she is forced back into a sit. My big monster, we tried every thing, variu trainers, leash snaps, blah blah e collar. He learned what was expected but he went back to his old ways anyway. The only thing was effective is taking away his freedom. He really does want to walk and sniff so if that gets blown he has a real consequence. He learned after only two sits.

One question, especially if said "red flags" are all around my family, is traveling. Will a quality breeder offer transportation if the buyer meets all other qualifications or if the trip can't be made for any reason by the buyer is that a deal breaker for the breeder?

    • @TheAkitaLife
      @TheAkitaLife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Many people travel to get their puppies, because ethical breeders are few and far between. We're in New England and we got Haga from a breeder in Idaho. Our next puppy will come from a breeder in Nashville.
Breeders will work with you to coordinate transport. In our case Haga was flown to Illinois as a carry on with someone else who was also getting a puppy from the same litter, and then we drove to Illinois to pick him up, but there are services that specialize in transporting dogs.

What should I have vet check for comprehensive exam? I pound hound dumpster dive for dogs and I can attest that even shelters exploit animals having adopted a blue white Amstaff. Told he was on the short list, 'kennel cough', he was severely neglected, heart disease, hip dysplasia, but looked past that to give him ownership he deserved while I could. On the eve of deciding to put him down, I see a beautiful young female, intact, never bred. I expected a mental case, but she is very well tempered. She appears to be ~2. She will be spayed and chipped upon me taking full ownership. Quad wormed and Frontline plus from day one. Particularly, both front shoulder upper joint have very little fur and skin has a scarred look. I'm not looking for perfection, just some good quality years without crippling vet bills.
