- A WABCO. Model E2-B1 3 chime. An early chime which is not likely to be seen anymore. I remember them on some first generation PRR. diesel's, and the 1950's experimental electric's. This one is from my collection.

This is my first time hearing this horn... And man sounds absolute BEAUTIFUL
I like the sound of that horn!! I remember that the PRR used these onsome of their locomotives. Also in Duluth Mn their vertical lift bridge at the entrance to Duluth harbor has the E2B1 horns on it but it sounds like the large bell is not sounding.
This horn is absolutely SICK!! Love it!!
Nice! I can hear the E2 "honker" part of the horn. Overall this sounds similar to some of the marine vessels I've heard in the past.
Thanks for posting :)
ACLTony reminds me greatly of a Kahlenberg T-2
Ha ha, it sounds like they put a ocean liner on rails. That is a sweet horn.
I just had to comment on this one. Normally I would prefer to hear the sounds of the mechanicals--prime mover, etc. rather than the horns. BUT I couldn't get enough of this horn!
If I heard that coming at me, I'd certainly be paying it some attention!
What a great catch!
Rick
Was in New Ringold Pa yesterday 3-18-12 on other business, heard the E2-B1 and recalled your video at once. Looked like the same unit, sounded like a SD-50 or -60 turbine whine. There is about 20 grade and ped crossings in a congested ±1200ft stretch, plenty of whistle and bell in there. Really commands attention, amazing to hear it's echo through the valley and from hills very far off. People walking around didn't even blink. Crew was spotting cars for anthracite loads about 1300hrs. Best ~ CW
It sounds like a ship horn
This might be the most badass train horn I've ever heard.
That horn sounds deep and meaty!! Give me chills if it were foggy and the only thing I saw and heard would be the lights and horn coming at me.
That really is a great sounding horn. The big, deep tone is quite the attention getter.
I can already imagine seeing an old E Unit or ALCO PA with this horn! Amazing sound!
Funny that you mention that. I actually operate my two Proto 2000 E7s with those horns.
Sounds almost like a ship! Beautiful horn!
Wow, it is like a mix between a Leslie S-5T and a ferry horn. Why aren't these still used! These should replace NS's Krap5LA.
Central Penn Rail Productions E2-B1's use a hell lot of air.
love it, this RR takes good care of their horns it seems!
Wow! Sound more like an ocean liner!
Thanks for sharing!

Wow1 Ed. they sounded very good. It look cool to see a freight go through thorpe too.
Len.
Wow Ed, Ever since I heard your video I just couldn't get that sweet powerful sound out of my head. I wanted to buy one for myself until I realized that the price was out of reach for me. I did the next best thing and created my own and I hope to have it posted on the H&W board sometime next week. I bought an all aluminum E2 and two K1L Nathans and built my own manifold. I retuned one of the K1L's to blow 210hz (A flat), the other K1L already blew 255hz. (C flat) The E2 blows 156hz (E flat).
Very suiting for the PRR. Especially E-units and PA's.
A simple, yet beautiful beast! Too bad you don't hear horns like that anymore.
That’s a very nice horn. I like to use those in conjunction with Nathan M5s on my two HO scale Southern E7As.
Looks like 5014 gets her horn Swapped periodically too
Man, that horn is a beauty!!
Love the sound of that horn! Just saw 5014 sitting in Jim Thorpe yesterday, it’s wearing a K5LA now.
guys we gotta set up a petition for this to be put on PRR 7249 (6076 nowadays) it would sound soo good bouncing off the hills of the old PRR
great sound when the train passes by. it gave me goose bumps.
For some reason, I seem to remember a horn similar to this on an old Guilford unit
The WABCO E2-B1 was used on many first generation PRR Locomotives in the 1950-60's, heard my first on the New York division.
Ed K.
Edward Kaspriske I found an image of an old ALCo with a e2b1
Id say it would suit an F unit nicely
This is definitely the best horn in existence.
Awesome, thanks for posting, Ed! Gave me goosebumps. -Chris
that's great that the R&N lets you do that, great horn btw. I would like to see more!
The E2 stays distinct in the chorus
That horn should be on an RV
Beautiful horn
Awesome horn!
Sounds especially menacing, like something you'd hear on a railroad running along the River Styx!
BEEEEAAAAAAUUUUUTIFUL!!!! Thanks for sharing!!!!
Cool that sounds great!
Sounds GREAT!!
Very nice
uploaded on my birthday!!!!
I love it, great sounding. The beast is awake :)
Sounds so much like Pere Marquette 41's horn that is now on my friend's semi.
Great horn!
GOD BLESS THE E2B1!!!!
that sounds really cool
Sounds like a ship horn mixed with a k5lla train horns
Man that horn is epic, wish they would have these instead of K5LAs.
What a great sounding horn. I also like some of the old Leslie horns. I wish they used them on the BNSF. There is a crossing 1/8 mile from my house and the BNSF horns are irritating.
Nice i love this horn!
Woah..
Incredible contei
aahhh, the old Wabco E-2B-1, i think my favorite one starts at 3:08
It's the intro
PA, they also run steam sometimes.
@gajda1984 sounds more like a ferryboat or a towboat or tugboat than a train!
We have one of these on our GE 50 ton. Sounds really mean till you see whats rollin' under it. Very unique though. Horn is about as long as the cab roof with one bell reversed.
lol
Not bad-sounding at all. Sounds kinda like a ship!
vodepcreatorgr: Because they have the already impossibly loud K5LA which people seem to like, yet they make sure they dampen the sound anyway.
That's on an SD50? Wow. Sure had a beautiful sound to it. They should use these nowadays, a great break from endless seas of K-horns!
It's a SD offering from EMD, basically a 6-axle GP50
@@AVeryRandomPerson I know what an SD50 is. I was talking about the horn.
I like the video edit. Very good! Nice movie! :)
wow a Ship horn plus train horn intresting combanation
I was only 11 when I drove a train on the reading and northern
This train horn looks like a tuba.
The low triad has a very eerie sound to it -- the right ligting and setting could make it a horn for a ghost train...
He shoots he scores!!!!!🥅🏒
The sound of that horn plus that EMD 645 what more could you want?
FGLK1702
Maybe a Roots-blown 567 and a caboose. 😁
another horn + Leslie A200.
Sound like our ferry horn ! lol
2:12
Reading and northern 5014
I WANT ONE!!!!
That would be epic in my pickup truck for running fire calls, and when some azzole cuts me off. 😜😜
Very weird but cool horn
YEEEEESSSS
I like to envision this style of horn on a Baldwin DRS 6-4-1500 5 stacker or a Baldwin 2000hp center cab!! unit!!
Sounds like a dual toned gg1 horn
Shit sounds scary
Great video! Say, I'm trying to find out the make/model of the Pittsburgh Penguins goal horn. This is pretty close, but all I know is that it's a 3-chime air horn. Can anyone help me with this project?
What railroad originally used this horn?
The e2b1 still exists.
@izzwardo
Actually its not.
Ed K.
I thought that boxcar was going to tipover at 0:55.
hey ed
what is the engine at the end?
i think i see a P5 on her
Really cool. Where does R&N run normally?
Must be somewhere in Pennsylvania, eh?
Northeast Pennsylvania going to east central PA
Thanks.
this might be a really stupid question but what is the point of the horn? Is it to make people aware that a train is coming or does it do something for the train.
Nicholas Kung
Precisely what it's for. If you noticed that the engineer sounded 2 short blasts before moving, he was warning anyone around that the train was going to move.
The standard grade crossing warning is 2 long blasts, a short blast, and a long blast which is held as the lead locomotive enters the crossing. Back in the old days, the engineer could also signal for the hand brakes to be applied or released by signaling with the steam whistle, the predecessor of the modern air horn.
Give this horn to CSX please
if i heard that id get out the way quick!
what railroad is this?
Reading & northern
That horn certainly is different. There's no way anyone wouldn't hear that coming. it's too bad freight cars look so shabby these days what with all the damn graffiti.
Ship horn !
It's a SD50
