Crisis may be an understatement at this point. I've had nightmares about this for two nights in a row. I used to live two hours from Shanghai and have been to that city numerous times. This is incomprehensible to me. I feel so anxious and afraid for these residents and wonder if anyone I have known personally is among those locked inside or being forced into a quarantine centre.
I live in Germany now. In November 2020, the gov't announced a hard lockdown that was only supposed to last two weeks. Instead, it lasted 6 months. Then in September 2021, the gov't became a bit heavy-handed about vaccine passes. Now they've relaxed this as well. But at no point during their harshest restrictions did they stop people from going to the supermarket or to restaurants to order takeaway. They certainly never forced anyone to stay indoors.
I think the state of Victoria (Australia) imposed a strict lockdown similar to Shanghai's, and this moved dangerously close to violating human rights. But from my understanding, nobody in Victoria was denied medical care/treatment. And those who were locked down were still able to get their food and medicine delivered without too much disruption, to my knowledge at least. The behaviour of the gov't in Shanghai right now is utterly reprehensible.

Aussie here from Vic, our premier did aim from 0 elimination and was successful for more than half a year until Omicron hit our shores. Our other states except NSW was against it because it's a Liberal state. (Money over people). It's not violating human rights, our death rates are one of the lowest in the world. When hospitals denies medical treatments it means they are overwhelmed and it did happen here. Idiots who did not follow Covid safety protocols were killing people indirectly, they take up the hospital beds so other people died for their selfishness. This happened in the US too, most people were told to go home or was told to wait at home and some do die from serious chronic conditions or accidents. China's safety protocol may seem harsh but it's the only country putting their elderly, sick or young people as priority. As an immune compromised person, I can say this put people like me at ease and it also tells me that I matter.

Community can have group purchasing. There was one case caught on camera: a community bought 50 KFC take aways, and 50 family tested positive after that. After news came out, someone release a video that he shotted: the delivery guy deliberately open each take away and touch the food with his hand. And this guy was later test positive. Every delivery guy should be tested in principle, but some people managed to escape that. Government didn't realized the flaws until citizens reported such cases.

Sh gov literally got no clue what they're doing and they're basically changing the strategy every few days until they find one that works. Plus it seems like the government is caring more about asymptomatic people who are completely fine over people who require medical attention in other areas, which is simply ridiculous. That all changed in 2021, only Vietnam had its worser than China today because at that time we were not vaccinated yet. We had to lock down our main city for a month due to low vaccination rate but no where as strict as China.
We paid the price in total death from one of the lowest in the world to currently within top 20 countries with the most death(40k). But we emegered from it quite well I would have to say, due to the fact that we knew when to abandon zero-covid policy.

In New Zealand we conducted the most comprehensive lockdown for 3 months, we allowed only the most necessary work to be carried out (of course with regulation). However we did always allow people to go to the supermarket (with regulation). We generally accepted the lockdown, although the advent of Omicron no longer required a zero policy.

This is what ive been saying. The purpose is to bring down the global supply chain. Also i believe this is a test to see how ppl react under starvation while under a technocratic dictatorship

Bear with them. They realized after Trump tariffs that no country can replace China manufacturing capability. So their pain will also be the pain of the rest of the world

Superb report. I repeat my comments that your newspaper should set up a TV channel because your news is respected and trusted. You can be the Al Jazeera of Asia. Please consider. Thank you.
