    Informative and very reassuring video, as we're picking up a near identical Mini tomorrow! Except black interior instead of white. Agree 100% with the test drive/receipt comment - these things have enormous charm, which is sadly lacking in so many modern vehicles.

    One of the union officers in Missouri got a Chevy Volt in 2010, or there abouts. I don't know how long he kept it but he drove it for a year and a half and only used one tank of gas. It was a hybrid but he used it exclusively around town and recharged it when he went home every day. He was very impressed with everything about it. My brother in law bought one of the little Honda Insights about a year after they came out. When he sold it in 2003 it had 185,000 miles and the battery pack had to be replaced at 165,000 miles but Honda only charged $1500 for it. He consistantly got above 50 MPG on it and there was no way to charge it except with the engine. When they make an electric car that will go 300 miles and can be recharged in 30 minutes the market for gas powered cars will drop to 25% of the market.

    80 cents for a charge up is insane. I had been a combustion engine fan until I saw the honda E (which isn't available in the states) which brought me to the Mini electric. They are so affordable and I don't travel across the country so mileage isn't an issue. Loved the honesty!

    My guess on the drive selector is that its operation is descended from automatics, where Park and Reverse are the forward (or up on the steering column originally) positions and Drive is back (or down). Mine is in transit from the port to arrive sometime this week! Exciting!

    I had a car that beeped every second it was in reverse. The sound could only be heard inside the car, so seemed pointless. Fortunately it was an easy fix. There was a small speaker on the back of the gauge cluster. Removing it made the beeping stop.

    • @valkyriefrost5301
      @valkyriefrost5301 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect you had a Prius. The beeping (in the Prius) is to remind the driver the car is in reverse as the "gear selector" is more like a manual stick shifter. In a stick shift, the "up" position is typically first gear, whereas this position is reverse for the Prius. For folks who have never driven a stick, the beeping makes no sense to them.

    Very nice review, thank you. You didn't cover range, which would be important to me. However, I did see on the charging meter inside the car that it said the range was 169km at 99% charge. That doesn't seem like nearly enough range for me. Should be at least double that to be useful. I hope future versions of the mini get a better range.

    • @ScottRods

    • @valkyriefrost5301
      @valkyriefrost5301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the solution here would be to have a "drop in" second battery as a range booster (for an extra fee). For longer trips, you could drop it in the hatch and plug it in. When not needed, leave it in the garage on a special shelf built into the charger. This way, you'd not be carrying the extra weight every trip. Ultimately, the drop in concept could be standardized and instead of stopping at a gas station for a petrol fill up, you could stop by for a booster battery swap.

    • @alexdubois6585
      @alexdubois6585 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is important to have the 2 markets and have cars with less range like the mini. The advantage is that the car is much lighter, which is more fun and cheaper to run. On the issues I've got with mine (Europe 2021): the driver seat is not electric and because both me and my wife constantly swap, she pump the seat up and forward and me the opposite. The other thing is the light indicator, it is a pain to switch off if it did not trigger to go off due to the curve of the road. And the last thing is Apple Car play is buggy, but this is probably an Apple thing. Apart from that, I completly agree, it is a fantasatic car. The rare times I take the diesel (because of the range or if we are the 4 of us in the same car), I feel like I'm on a noisy, smely vibrating and slow tractor. The Mini SE feels like an agile space ship in comparison.

    In its In its category the mini is one of the best to drive, dynamics are good, its a nice place to be. It's expensive though, and it has the smallest battery in its class.
    Charging speed is also under par with most of its rivals like Peugeot charging @ 100 KWh with larger batteries,
    Its a stylish car but I do not want to my compromise drive without heating set to my requirements because of range.
    When they make aCountryman with a 50 KwH battery that charges at 125 KWh I will buy one.
    BMW are keeping quite about the recommended charging and degradation, because 80% of 100 miles makes the Mini an even worse proposition.

So I've been hearing that batteries in the Chevy Bolt are crapping out after 5 years in northern climates because of using the elecric heaters, and that its cheaper to scrap it and buy a new car rather than buy a new battery. BUT if "fuel" cost is next to nothing then that has to figure in to the total cost of running a car for that time. Might work out even if you have to buy a new car every 5 years.

    • @minise-focus
      @minise-focus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With the lower range on the SE, Mini designed the battery to be charged to 100% as often as needed. So telling it to only charge to 80% is not needed, if that is one of the things you were referring to. The built in buffer is around 8% at the top and 4% at the bottom. The US warranty is 30% degradation over 8 years / 100,000 miles.

    • @ScottRods

      Battery is BMW and has an 8 year warranty. Battery technology is changing quickly, so if we still have the car by that time, we might be changing it to a non lithium battery, which seems to be the future of batteries. We're not worried.
