Shuckle is one of the primary reasons Double Team is banned EVERYWHERE. Typical set for Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald: BrightPowder (raises holder's Evasion Stat by 10%) Careful Nature, Sturdy 252 HP/128 Def/128 SpD Toxic Double Team Protect Rest Double Team turn 1, then it's GGs if they lack a Poison Type or Steel Type Pokemon. Careful Nature is just to make sure those ever-present Special moves don't destroy you. If Shuckle gets Status'ed, Rest away. In Doubles paired with a Wobbuffet, this set is entirely INVINCIBLE. Run a strong Ground, Psychic or Fire Pokemon to kill Steel and Poison. Alakazam neuters Gengar and Weezing with Psychic, Mixed Salamence kills Metagross, Forrestress, Magneton, etc. One could also run Defensive Mean Look/Baton Pass Umbreon to trap Shuckle targets. Once the opponent's Steel and Poison Pokemon get taken out, it's absolutely over.
Hi, I'd like to introduce you to the move Taunt, which utterly breaks this Shuckle and 100% of Wobbuffets. Also, that Double Team is not banned in official tournaments, because Nintendo and Game Freak understand what the actual definition of "competitive" is.
ashunyanMMD Without even getting into the fact that these games aren't created with competitive battling in mind, let's just say that Nintendo and Game Freak can barely understand how to create balance in-game, let alone in a meta-game. Just look at what they did to regigigas. They figured his stats were so good that they needed to "balance" it out by giving him the ability "slow start", not realizing that this effectively made him completely useless. This thing is supposed to be the mighty creator of the regi-trio and is supposed to be the strongest of them all, yet it is clearly the worst legendary pokemon ever created because the creators couldn't even figure out that you would never want to keep the damn thing in for 5 turns for it to get decent. This should give you a good idea of how great their understanding is of the balance in their own game. How do you expect these guys to actually organize a balanced meta-game? Assuming they would ever even have the time or effort to do that in the first place? They just ban the front cover legendaries and call it a day because that's the quick and easy solution. I also love the naivety of assuming that if something is in the game, then it must be competitively fair just by the fact that it exists. Imagine if in the next-gen games they added a feature that gives you a choice to flip a coin before every battle, and depending on what you would get you would either instantly win or lose the battle. Now imagine doing this in every fight of an actual tournament and actually win the tournament this way. What would this actually say about your ability to play pokemon? Absolutely nothing. Neither you nor your opponent can influence what the outcome will be because it's completely out of your control. That's why it's not "competitive". You could not in good consciousness claim that you are good at pokemon for winning like this, not even if you used a rigged coin that put the odds against you. Surely you must understand this right? This is an extreme example, and a feature like this would probably never be added, but the principle of this example is the exact reason why stuff like "double team" and "moody" aren't appreciated.
PapaLuigi3000 If you would rather whine about something being "unfair" than find a way to work around it, you don't deserve any sort of championship title. There ways around literally everything in Pokemon, and the best of the best will always find those ways. Someone who spams Double Team and expects to win is about as skilled as someone who thinks using all the "strongest" Pokemon stat-wise guarantees them the win. Think about the VGC 2014 Masters World Championship battle -- Se Jun Park built a team to support Pachirisu and cover its weaknesses, so Pachirisu could in turn be viable support for the rest of the team. He took everything into account when choosing all his Pokemon's moves, abilities, natures and stat spreads, and he won. Hell, he completely wrecked Mega Kangaskhan and Talonflame, two of the Pokemon that Smogon battlers love to whine about being "without counters" or whatever else, with a team mostly consitered to be much "lower-tier" than them And, you seem to forget that Taunt can also put Double Teamers in a bad situation, and a Pokemon carrying a combination like Technician + Feint Attack can also put that move back in the not-exactly-OP pile. The claim that Double Team has no viable counters is also moot, since there are plenty of moves that have even fewer "viable" workarounds than it (Stealth Rock comes to mind, as only two moves can effectively get rid of it and only one of them is even remotely useful outside that one instance). I'd also like to mention that there are ways around "bad"/"unfair abilities like Slow Start and Moody -- VCG format being Doubles allows much more opportunities for tricks like Skill Swap or Role Play to work, and both of those result in YOU more rewards than your opponent. Regarding Nintendo's banlist, though, I wouldn't call it the "easiest" way out at all. The idea of competition is to make the best of what you have and fight to come out on top. True unfair play would be Nintendo saying "Hey, we know that not everyone has access to the strongest Legendary Pokemon, but we're not going to stop anyone who does have them from using them, because that would be limiting them!" They only ban event Legends and those like Mewtwo, Palkia, etc., because they acknowledge that those Pokemon are by nature way too powerful to ever be a fair matchup against every other Pokemon. Not to mention, VGC is set up is by separating players by skill level, not by the Pokemon they use. Having tiers like Smogon's only puts more limits on competitors, and banning only certain moves or abilities because some brats want to scream "unfair" or "unbalanced" takes away from the true spirit of competition -- that is, doing anything you can within the rules to disrupt the balance just enough to tip the scales into your favor and secure a win for your team. And the thing about balance in Pokemon, is that it matters more for the types to be balanced than the move or ability selection to be. The Fairy type gave Dragons a much needed nerf and made Poison and Steel types more viable, and outside of that having all the moves and abilities legally available to you is what drives people to find strategies that will net them a victory without being limited to the "standards" that sites like Smogon set up. Which, by the way, seem pretty averted to most things that don't fall into the basic sweep-to-win "strategy".
ashunyanMMD I just love how you guys take pride in Se Jun Park's Pachirisu as if his accomplishments somehow belongs to you. As if the people who play by smogon rules aren't just as impressed and happy for him. He used a rogue strategy, something that people weren't expecting and knew how to deal with. Am I surprised that he won with this strategy? No. Do I expect to ever see it being used successfully ever again? Also no. Do I expect to see new types of rogue strategies that are different from this one being used successfully? Yes. The flaw in your argument is that you make it seem as if this tournament has proven that Pachirisu somehow isn't still an objectively much worse pokemon than the stuff you see more commonly, which it is. Also, even though you show awareness of this later on in your comment, you are disregarding the fact that double battles follows a completely different format than singles and allows for more dynamic styles of play when you make that comment about Mega-Kangashan not having counters according to smogon. An argument that smogon holds for the singles meta-game and nothing else. By the way, whenever you guys bring Se Jun Park up you always neglect to mention that the rest of his team still consisted of stuff like talonflame and the like. Hmmm... I wonder why that is... -"Someone who spams Double Team and expects to win is about as skilled as..." -"The claim that Double Team has no viable counters is..." You're missing the point. The success rate of the move isn't the reason the move isn't appreciated. It's the very nature of the move itself. I don't like to repeat myself but in my coin flip analogy I said this: "You could not in good consciousness claim that you are good at pokemon for winning like this, not even if you used a rigged coin that put the odds against you." The fact that a move like this exists in the first place removes the integrity of the game. There is nothing to calculate, nothing to predict. It's basically just a matter of making the move and "hoping" that it pays off. Moves like stealth rock still allows for good players to adjust their playstyle and come out on top in spots where a less experienced player would have made a mistake and lost. When you use something like a smeargle with the "moody" ability however, how would your skill level have any influence in the outcome whatsoever? -"They only ban event Legends and those like Mewtwo, Palkia, etc., because they acknowledge that those Pokemon are by nature way too powerful to ever be a fair matchup against every other Pokemon." On what standards? Their stats? Their movepool? Their abilities? Their typings? No. None of the above. They are banned ONLY because they have an arbitrary label called "legendary" on them and nothing else. If you seriously believe that any legendary pokemon is by nature stronger than any non-legendary just because of that label alone then quite frankly, I could only assume that you were an idiot. What if legendary pokemon weren't even a thing and Mewtwo was just another pokemon that you could randomly run into in a cave. Would it be fair game then? What if Slaking was a legendary? Hell, it's stats are good enough to put it up there so why not, right? Would you consider it to be broken and unfair to use then? This is ridiculous. -"Having tiers like Smogon's only puts more limits on competitors..." It's the other way around. Once again, if mewtwo was fair game, would this invite people to use a bigger variety of pokemon? No, because most of the stuff that was usable before would be too weak to deal with the big guy who bullies them around. If everyone is allowed, that doesn't mean that everyone will get used. In fact, you would only ever see the most powerful pokemon, and the things that can counter it on every single team. By restricting the better pokemon into higher tiers, you allow for the pokemon that would otherwise never be used to shine. Haven't you ever wondered why the tiers are even called "OverUSED", "UnderUSED", "Rarely USED" etc? The whole point of the tiering system to begin with is to create more diversity in the game by not letting the stuff that gets used the most keep players away from using the stuff that gets used the least. When something gets "banned", the only thing that happens is that it gets moved up to a higher tier where it no longer can bully everyone around. You can still use whatever the hell you want to in Ubers and let all the overpowered monsters take on each other, but oh yeah, for some reason this isn't ok because that tier has those crazy "overpowered by nature legendaries", right? Pffft.

Hell, he completely wrecked Mega Kangaskhan and Talonflame, two of the Pokemon that Smogon battlers love to whine about being "without counters" or whatever else, with a team mostly consitered to be much "lower-tier" than them
And, you seem to forget that Taunt can also put Double Teamers in a bad situation, and a Pokemon carrying a combination like Technician + Feint Attack can also put that move back in the not-exactly-OP pile.
-"Someone who spams Double Team and expects to win is about as skilled as..."
-"The claim that Double Team has no viable counters is..."
You're missing the point.
-"They only ban event Legends and those like Mewtwo, Palkia, etc., because they acknowledge that those Pokemon are by nature way too powerful to ever be a fair matchup against every other Pokemon."
On what standards?
-"Having tiers like Smogon's only puts more limits on competitors..."
It's the other way around. Pffft.
PapaLuigi3000 What a perfect response.
A shuckle with attract, toxic, substitute, leftovers, and double team knocks on my door
Me: *Yes satan?*
That shuckles has 99 full restores
@@ayaynical4002 if I faced something like that I would quit pokemon
Thank god there is an evasion clause.
The funny things is that it's actually relatively rare to end up with a female starter, since that allows you to breed them.
Werster: *doing a speed run*
Shuckle: no
Man, its like catching a legendary with ultra balls
Someone said that double team kills 90% of his speed runs, even though it only happened 4 times, which happened once with each of the 4 pokemon listed: Shuckle, Crobat, Gengar, and Pikachu.
This reminds me of my friend perfect everything full team of shuckles. He brought it to one tournament, one one game because the person just quit, gave the win to them as it was a joke then fucking left. God he was a legend
I laughed so hard when he started to struggle and missed
I wonder why pokemon games never go full satan and pit you against a blissey/skarmory that plays like these shuckles?
Don't you mean, go full Giratina? XD
skarmory has hard tanking potential???? in all my years of loving the funky steel bird, i never once considered using it as a tank/evade tank. maybe i should try that.
@@bittersweetvictory8541 he def has a really good tank potential, i used him on my RU and UU team in gen5 he has a really high defense, he is just specific to tanking physical attacks btw in a good team you always need 1 physical and 1 special tank, a mixed tank usually dont work at all

There's always that one guy who uses Double Team in competitive battling.
Wouldn’t Zap Cannon require 5 coils? And of course you’re getting attack buffed instead of special attack, which is a downer.
SoulBlast35 I honestly prefer giving the opponent truant with Durant. I find it funny that the worse ability in the game is actually a useful gimmick for exactly one Pokémon. Not that good but when you have the opponent on their last Pokémon and then give them truant they are done.

Why toxic and will o wisp? EVs all on Defenses, no leftover but evolite, use pain split for recovery. The low hp means you will be full health from pain splits and then you get like 500 def and sp def from the evolite. Sorry my friend. You are the scrub 😬
