  • Two reasons for this video:
    1. My wife was involved in a minor traffic accident yesterday and I thought it was time to take another look at her 70mai A800 after 8 months of use.
    2. Someone left a comment last week about problems with the parking surveillance feature of the A800. In this video I give an overview of the feature showing how it works.

    Appreciate the video, very helpful. I am about to get some dashcam for my mazda, and was wondering do you think viofo a129 duo would be a better choice?
    I've heard that viofo a129 duo pro and plus versions also have overheating issues, but viofo a129 duo standard version- although it has lower res video, it doesn't overheat as much due to smaller sensor and video resolution.
    Where do you live in the south? How does the cam handle the hot days?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't really say because I've had no experience of Viofo. I've only had experience of the 70mai Pro and 70mai A800. I did exchange some comments with someone (I think he was in Australia) who decided that Viofo would be a better choice than 70mai.
      70mai are good basic cameras, but the added extras (ADAS, parking surveillance) aren't very useful. In my videos I get quite a lot of negative comments about these features and I don't find them particularly useful myself. Some people also want capacitors instead of batteries - I'm not sure what the Viofo cameras use.
      I'm in the south quite near to the Malaysian border. The hot season isn't as hot as in other parts of Thailand, but there is no cool season. It's either hot and wet or hot and dry. I've had no problems at all as a result of the heat. The adhesive pad and electrostatic sticker has kept the camera stuck to the windscreen and the camera itself has had no heat-related problems. Sometimes in the hot season it gets close to 40C outside and when the car is parked outside I'm guessing the temperature inside the car could get up to 60C or more. It feels like a furnace.

    Informative video as always! Having bought two of these cameras for my cars, I've got mixed feelings and I agree to all that you've said in this video. I honestly regret not investing for brands better than 70mai. The camera itself is really good, there's no doubt about that but, some little "hitches" or bugs just make me want to dislike it(maybe I am disliking it already). 70mai's customer support is, well, nonexistent. I've tried contacting them about an audio/video sync issue thrice but they've never replied. The issue went away after formatting the SD card. Also, some changes they made on their new firmware(especially them disabling parking mode without the hardware kit) is just frustrating. One other feature which I expected it to have is the ability to plot the GPS coordinates on a map. I've tried many third party apps but I couldn't get them to work. The 70mai app does have a 'Driving route' option but I've no idea how to get it to work. I have two questions -
    1) Which firmware is your camera on? My cameras currently have 1.0.9ww installed in them and there are a lot of bugs.
    2) This might be a stupid question but - Does the camera still use the standard cigarette lighter plug with the Hardware Kit installed?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your comment! Like your audio sync problem, the parking surveillance problem I first saw today went away after formatting the SD card. Another thing that disappointed me was that they did away with voice control on later models. It is an incredibly useful feature on my 70mai Pro. It's lots of little things that make me disappointed with 70mai, even though the hardware is very good.
      My wife's A800 has firmware 1.0.0ww and my Pro is still on 1.0.6na. I gave up doing firmware updates because there were problems and also because of that change regarding the hardwire kit. On my car I can use parking surveillance without a hardwire kit if I need to, therefore I don't want to add firmware that will stop it working.
      I don't have any experience of hardwire kits, but as far as I am aware they are wired directly into the fuse box and you can't use a cigarette lighter. I have my Pro connected to an 12v outlet (cigarette lighter) that is always live. Parking surveillance works fine, but there is a risk that I could run the battery flat and not be able to start the car. The advantage of the hardwire kit is that it monitors the voltage and turns off the camera when the battery gets low.
      That's fine, but I think users should be given a choice. With the latest firmware you have no choice. You MUST use the 70mai hardware kit if you want to use parking surveillance.
      As for investing in other brands, when my 70mai Pro bites the dust eventually I probably will get another brand.

    • @ruatachhangte
      @ruatachhangte 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhilUKNet you're probably making a better choice by not updating it. Likewise, I will definitely switch to Viofo or some other brand when they eventually break. One annoying thing is that the watermark and other information on screen are all white and they cannot be read at all as my car is white. A simple firmware update could fix this but, 70mai isn't interested. This is one of the many problems I've noticed with the camera which has definitely dissuaded me from recommending it to anyone.
      I am trying to come up with a system to hook a small battery which will be used exclusively by the camera for Parking Surveillance. It would have some cutout system to prevent the camera from draining the main battery after it dies. This way, I could turn on Parking Surveillance without needing to worry about the camera draining my main battery.
      I've noticed that my cameras get uncomfortably hot every time it records, to the point that I don't think it is normal. I've never driven under hot conditions and direct sunlight for prolonged periods but I am sure it will get overheated if they are subjected to those conditions. Do both your cameras get abnormally hot too?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ruatachhangte As you say, changing the text colour would be a simple firmware change but they aren't interested. Some people have actually hacked the firmware to add functionality that 70mai refuse to add. This is one way around it, but not an ideal solution.
      Living in southern Thailand, it gets very hot but I haven't noticed any heat issues with either camera.
      Viofo is a brand I've been looking at after their cameras were recommended in another comment. They use capacitors, apparently, instead of batteries. I will wait until my camera stops working before I replace it.
      Good luck with your battery system idea!

    Thanks for the video. How sensitive is the g-sensor? The tap you gave it probably corresponds with someone crashing into you @ 100kph. xD
    Does it also trigger with a tap on the bonnet? Or a small shake of the car? This is my main concern with "g-sensor parking mode". That it only triggers if a truck crashes into your car.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's quite a difficult question to answer. When I was doing some testing I often found - as you point out - that I had to give it quite a hard tap. A tap on the bonnet or a gentle shake won't do it.
      I put a 70mai A800 in my wife's car, a small Honda Brio with quite hard suspension. On the high sensitivity setting there would be an emergency video every time she went over a bump in the road. I changed the setting to low sensitivity to stop this, but she had a minor accident recently when a motorbike slid into the front of the car and it didn't trigger an emergency video.
      On the high setting it will most likely go off for a collision involving a car, not necessarily a truck. The parking surveillance sensitivity is also adjustable, but I suspect that quite a lot of damage could be done without triggering a video. It does work, but depending on the strength and location of impact it may not go off.

    instead of using the hardwire option, is it possible to connect the dashcam to an external battery to take advantage of the 24 hr parking surveillance?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can only tell you what I have read in comments on my videos. Quite a long time ago I heard from some people who were using power banks (external batteries) and they say it worked. However, something else I was told in the comments is that 70mai changed the camera firmware so that parking surveillance will only work if you have a hardwire kit installed. I'm not sure how they do this, but even if you have an external battery the parking surveillance feature may not work because it requires a hardwire kit. I'm still using an old version of the firmware (1.0.6na) that doesn't need the hardwire kit. If you understand enough about electronics and can somehow fool the camera into thinking that an external battery is a hardwire kit you may get it to work, but I don't have this knowledge. I have no personal knowledge of any of this - it's just things I have read in comments, so I really don't know much about the issue.

      You need to install a hardwire kit and enable parking surveillance to record parking incidents when the ignition is turned off. Also, the sensor isn't very sensitive and doesn't always trigger an event when you rock the car of slam a door.

Do you have any idea on how I can use the parking mode without the cigarette lighter?

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think your only option will be a hardwire kit. These are wired directly to the fuse box and provide voltage with the ignition off. One of the 12v outlets in my car is live with the ignition off. However, I've been told in comments that 70mai changed the firmware and parking mode will only work now with a hardwire kit. They're not too expensive and 70mai sells one. Depending on your skill level you may be able to fit it yourself or you may need to get it fitted. The other advantage is that they monitor the voltage and will turn off the camera before it drains your battery.

      I'd like to help ... but I'm really not sure. Part of the problem with 70mai is that the user documentation is useless and the menu options are ambiguous. When I first got my 70mai Pro I completely misunderstood the turn off time. This is how I *think* it should work. If the camera is connected to the car battery via a hardwire kit and you don't turn it off manually, it turns off automatically after a selected time (in your case, 5 minutes) and goes into parking mode. If this isn't happening, I don't know why.
      Presumably you have the hardwire kit, otherwise parking surveillance wouldn't work. In the fuse box is the hardwire kit connected to a circuit that is live all the time or a circuit that is only alive with the ignition on? In parking mode the ignition will be off, so you need a circuit that is live all the time.
      My camera doesn't have a hardwire kit, but it is connected to a 12v supply that is live all the time. On a few occasions I have forgotten to turn off the camera and didn't realise until a couple of days later. It didn't damage or run down the battery and I could still start the car.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check that when the ignition is off the camera (via the hardwire kit) is connected to a circuit that is live all the time. This could possibly be the problem, but I'm not sure.
