oorail.com | Hornby Class 101 3 car DMU Review - R3146 OO Gauge Model
Stumbled across a photo this evening from the early 1980s showing two three-car Class 101 units running as a six-car set. Seems to have been a popular running configuration up in Scotland...
EverardJunction Here is a quick review of the Bachmann Class 101 in BR Blue livery, along with a comparison with the Class 101 3-car unit from Hornby in BR Blue and Grey. Will be interesting to get a look at your Class 101 in BR Blue and Grey from Bachmann when you get a chance to review it. Enjoy!
Thanks once again for a great review... An Interesting take between the Bachmann and Hornby DMU....
You're welcome. The Bachmann set is definitely a far better build quality, especially with the lighting, close coupling and the overall weight of the DMU itself. At the RRP of £99, the Hornby model falls far short, however when you factor in the Hornby version was on sale for £59, its not a bad deal when you can add some weathering and lighting, and in motion a lot of the finer detail of the Bachmann isn't that easy to spot. That said, I definitely prefer the Bachmann version, hopefully they'll release a three car set next year, or we might luck out and they'll go on sale over Christmas at Hattons :)
Excellent review.
Thanks! Should be a few more later in the week, including the Beyer Garratt, and a few others! Had a bit of a backlog! :)
Nice set there. I shall be getting one of these soon :).
Yes definitely worth the investment... hopefully we'll see a three car version of this set in the near future...
I would assume that Bachmann will do a 3 car set if these twin sets are successful. I am looking forward to getting the new Class 90 model in all three liveries when its released from Bachmann :).
Ash.
Good review I have one of these for my wish list as it has taken a few years to get a good detailed version however this is a later BR Blue version with refurb fronts and no composite dcl.... so will have to wait a few years for one with orig front and with a dmbs & dcl and of course the recent price increases ...a little bit out of my range....
Knowing how Bachmann operate, I suspect we will see many different variants over the coming years, although with the price increase, I suspect a larger set will cost significantly more, so might want to start saving now!
oorail.com Yes what a stunning DMU, looks like another one to add to my never ending list, But I hope that Bachmann bring out a three car version of the Class 101.
What I will probably do is get a Hornby one too, so I can improve it, so I can have Bachmann two car & a Hornby three car,
Thanks for shearing,
Happy Modelling,
Phil
I'm sure we'll see variants over the next year or two. Bachmann do a pretty good job at recycling their models with new liveries, configurations and running numbers.
I think Hattons still have a few 108s on sale, those are fantastic models. I've been lucky enough to cherry pick DMUs from Hattons when they go on sale, some over 50% off! :)
Does anyone (maybe Dave47) remember these and 103 or 108 I think it was with a white livery with a single blue stripe that ran the length of the car below the window. Usually on the west coast of Scoltand Ayrshire route? they were always 3 or 6 car rakes ? also this was before the line was electrified, Just curious.
Is this the livery you are talking about?

If so, maybe it was class 101 and class 108s maybe?
DaveClass47 got any ideas on Alan's question?
oorail.com Yes mate ,that is the exact one. I am 45 and used to travel the Ayrshire line regularly to my gran's house. I just didn't know if it was used anywhere else on rural lines ,but thanks brings back memories ,also of the 86 & 87 loco's that used to take me from Glasgow down south. how I miss the 87
Alan Surgeoner Cool, yes I like the 87s, I actually have a few of them on the layout, should feature them in an upcoming video. I'm not 100% sure about that livery though, perhaps DaveClass47 ***** ***** or EverardJunction are familiar with it? I *think* it might be a livery BR used for local Passenger Transport Executives (PTE) in the late 1970s and early 1980s. You can read up about PTEs at:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passenger_transport_executive
I also found this page that shows DMUs in that livery in other PTEs:
locodriver.co.uk/Railway_Encyclopedia/Part210/Part03/index.html
Bachmann did a Class 108 in that livery for the Manchester PTE:
www.ehattons.com/23530/Bachmann_Branchline_32_903_Class_108_2_car_DMU_in_BR_Greater_Manchester_PTE_white_blue_livery_Chester_Manc/StockDetail.aspx
You can still find a few on eBay although they are a bit expensive.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to guide me to these sites. Look forward to seeing the 87's . It's a loco lots of people have fond memories of (especially the WCML) but not one you see often on layouts. Don't know whether they are scarce or because people want to be prototypical which means putting up overhead cables etc which may detract from videos . But thanks again
