We're approaching a mill subs which is wild. We'll do something cool if that happens so be sure to subscribe if you haven't. Full RP ep drops tomorrow morning. It's a really good one.
Watched Rich on Gil's Arena and I'm noticing a pattern - he seems to answer questions in such nebulous terms that it leaves you kind of still in the dark . Can't say this clip has brought anymore insight into power dynamics in the NBA.
Yeah he's got that Dame Dash style, kinda. The questions are just a prop for them to talk about whatever they want to talk about...similar to politicians Idk why but my BS meter (lack of a better term because they're not actually BS'ing or anything) goes orange-ish every time I listen to these guys. Can't quite put my finger on why I feel that way though...maybe I'm projecting, idk.
Took me exactly 15 seconds of listening to him for the first time right now to realize this. It's hard to knock though, he faked it till he made it and this bs way of bsing has clearly led to immense success for himself and his clients. Intelligence in his role is less valuable than savvy talking and being a good salesman. So why change? Why start being genuine now? 😂😂
I don't think any agent is likely to profess that player's hold the balance of power - the owner's will contest and fight back and use it as leverage against that bias. Similarly if he was to suggest the owners / front office are at the wheel, how is he able to hold court? He's admitting to being soft. Asking an agent where the power balance currently lies cannot elicit a profound response because it can only damage their position broadly; I don't think you could expect to hear anything profound from Rich Paul personally, but if his approach is player-centric and sincerely acting as a player's voice you can see why a player would appreciate it..
He's SO annoying. Clearly just likes to hear himself talk and doesn't actually care about responding to what the other person is saying. I keep waiting for him to say something that actually makes me think but it's all just non sense. Dude is a sham
So you dont think Ego is a problem for Ben Simmons, Harden, Kyrie? You dont think players have less power than they think they have (Harden, Melo, IT)? You think he is wrong about being professional, having the right attitude and playing at a high level give you more power with the owners?
If that's the case, why does RP push the narrative that his client is better than MJ as the GOAT? 🤔..... MJ chooses not to engage the debate (and let his accomplishments (and the reverence from professionals and others) speak for themselves....rightfully so)....let "joy" come from the massive accomplishments from both players and how both furthered the league in their own fashion....
This is good, JJ should interview more behind the scenes people like agents and executives and referees and people who are in charge of broadcasting or people who run the arenas
Hmmm, usually I really enjoy the podcasts and pretty much always find the speakers really interesting/enlightening. I was super excited to see one with Rich Paul, but I have to say, this is probably the first one where I've felt...underwhelmed? Maybe it's just this particular segment of the full podcast, but Rich comes across like he's saying a lot of nothing. It could just be his speaking style, or that he seems to be very carefully picking his words, but it just doesn't feel like a genuine answer. All he said here was really "most players dont have power, some go for the money and think they have power, Lebron/Steph and maybe a very small handful of others have actual power". I have to say, it would've been interesting to hear him unpack what power in the NBA actually means, or what a player can do with that power? It could've been interesting to hear him talk about power dynamics from owners to coaches to big fish agents to powerful players, etc. This just felt like a bit of a wasted opportunity to have a much more interesting discussion with an extremely unique and valuable voice of the league, but we got a generic answer that anyone could've given. Again, perhaps the full podcast with Rich is more substantial, but man, this one didn't feel like it hit the same bar/standard that these podcasts usually have.

Ehh. It's really at the heart of it all a business for the NBA executives and each individual franchise. Your entertainment is just a way to earn revenue. Not the ACTUAL priority. If you're a lil unhappy but still watching the same why would they wanna change and possibly lose some profit?
No, the nba is a sport first and foremost, lakers in the 80’s were the pioneers of making it for the fans but at the end of the day it’s a competitive sport now it’s just advertised very well
The reason they don't call fouls on superstars is for your entertainment. Entertaining fans is what has eliminated the fair competition aspect from the sport.

The fans are never mentioned in these conversations. The fans hold most control and are the most important thing but we never get the respect from teams, players or owners. It's our money that is keeping this whole thing a float with the subscriptions we pay for and the the tickets we buy and the merchandise we buy and the products of the advertisers we buy.
Only the US public is really engaged and willing to pay a lot of money to watch sacks of meat running after a ball. Basketball is simply not a global sport, Giannis and Luka can move to Spain and play in their league, it will not matter, they will not make even a third of the money. American football even more so, no wonder the NFL was able to keep their players under control for so long. It's a bizarre situation, how the NBA allows the players to be so entitled. Harden is currently trying to break his contract because he thinks he deserves more money... ok, if no one in the NBA picks him up, were he is going to play? China? He can't run away from the US, the money is in the US, the NBA has all the power

Giannis used leverage/power saying he wants out if Mil didn’t make changes. And then ended up getting Dame. Harden tried to do it but he ruined his rep after asking for multiple trades. I love how people are blaming young players for feeling entitled before they do anything... Yet it's actually the fans and media that hype these players to no end from the time they are 6 years old. What the hell do you expect when you are already crowning them from the time out of the womb? Rich is actually doing good work in teaching some of these guys that they still need to be professional and perform.
I'm glad you are so wise. Prior generations always complain about the youth, forgetting you brought the youth into the world (they are your children) and YOU RAISED THEM!!!! It's like the older generation points to these young and be life "Who raised you?" And the youth looking at them like....did you forget? YOU!!!!!!
Question - what is Power? Answer- the ability to change things in your favor. There are different types of power. Power by association (like RPs association with lebron), intimidation power (kg, gp3 forcing you to do stuff), political power (votes within the players association) , financial power (stars selling seats), inspirational power (coach mark jackson), group power (96 bulls taming rodman), institutional power (krause destroying the bulls dynasty), media power (ability to influence the publics mind about a player, coach or club), legal power (labor vs management) and much more.
Luka doncic should get Rich Paul as his agent man for Rich to tell him Dallas isn't it man. Bro actually does the best for his player not just what the player wants.
Anthony Davis is a bad example. Despite Paul's advice, he is the type of player who would be looking to secure as much money as possible because of his relatively high injury risk.

It's like the older generation points to these young and be life "Who raised you?"
And the youth looking at them like....did you forget? YOU!!!!!!

Where is Tommy?
Question - what is Power?
Answer- the ability to change things in your favor.
There are different types of power. Power by association (like RPs association with lebron),
intimidation power (kg, gp3 forcing you to do stuff),
political power (votes within the players association) ,
financial power (stars selling seats),
inspirational power (coach mark jackson),
group power (96 bulls taming rodman),
institutional power (krause destroying the bulls dynasty),
media power (ability to influence the publics mind about a player, coach or club),
legal power (labor vs management) and much more.
For those who don’t know Rich is really talking about his former client Ben Simmons in the beginning of this clip.
Look at Gil arena podcast he made perfect sense about this it’s not harden fault
Luka doncic should get Rich Paul as his agent man for Rich to tell him Dallas isn't it man. Bro actually does the best for his player not just what the player wants.
Superstars: 1. Lebron 2. KD 3. Steph 4. Kawhi 5. Jokic 6. Giannis Everyone else is below and the community knows 7. Kyrie (My opinion)
Every agent is the same
> Who really holds the power in the NBA?
The Owners?
unless you're MJ (as a player) the power is with the team owners, 100%. Players and everyone else are just employees.
I hate when I ask a question and someone answers the question like this… fam that’s not what I asked!!!
gauranteed money is the worst thing to ever happen in pro sports
He so smart but didn’t even understand JJ question. He was asking who has the power: players, owners or agents
Anthony Davis is a bad example. Despite Paul's advice, he is the type of player who would be looking to secure as much money as possible because of his relatively high injury risk.
I think of Harden when Rich Paul is talking about those layers a player needs to have power
Harden and on the other end of the spectrum it was Dame.
People swore he could go anywhere he wanted based off of who he was and what he’s done.
@@MaddNomad1015excellent example… dame was delusional enough to think he has that much power to choose where he wants to be even when the package is not ideal for Portland…
There’s a lot of max guys, only a couple superstars
I don’t think any NBA player wants anonymity that was kinda dumb. Especially NBA players. They been the man since grade school
Look at how they dress going into games
