i remember having a trial exactly like this in ao. i ended up making some really good points (example: a hole is defined as a empty space that leads into a tunnel, so for a straw there are 2 holes because there are 2 empty spaces that lead into a tunnel). it was really heated and my opponent (that was on the defense) was making a comeback but they suddenly said a line like "The two holes that a straw have", and i immediately used that against them to say that they just conceeded with me
to this day i still take that as a complete W and was one of my favorite AO trials ever

But wait! What you just proved (a hole is defined as a empty space that leads into a tunnel) dos NOT completely mean that a straw has 2 holes! Because there is a different empty space but they BOTH lead to the SAME TUNNEL!

@@mher_22 ..? i think you kinda missed the point
imagine this: there are two manholes next to eachother and they both lead to the same sewers, are they one hole or two holes? now just imagine that with straws
also, assuming something like a pit is also a hole, translate the "pits" to the 2 holes that a straw have and again you get 2 holes

@@thedebatemaster Yep, that's correct. However! The holes in the straws (assuming it's a normal straw lol) are facing against each other. So imagine this: there is a little meteor. And then there's a hole that leads from one side of the meteor to the other with a tunnel. Now according to the definition of a "hole" it is only one hole with a big tunnel.

If we use the same argument that people use, to say that a shirt has 4 holes, then, in fact, a straw should have 2

      That's a point

The answer is 0 if u dont want ur drink spilling over. Its a tube and the ends arent holes. And if they were it would be 1. And if we r talking the straw that is hay then still 0.

As you have seen in this video, a hole is a hollow place with an opening, aka a shape without a volume (excluding virtual ones) so actually, a straw does have holes.
ALSO WHY DID YOU THINK WE COULD BE TALKING ABOUT STRAW THAT IS HAY???

actually, (yes im going full nerd mode) a straw has no holes. its a rectangle, but its bended into a straw! i hope that makes sense.
therefore, a straw has no holes.

Nope, the definition is "a hollow place", and thus everything hollow and has no volume (excluding virtual volumes) has a hole. And a straw does not have a non-virtual volume.

(going full nerd mode) Since the word "hole" is used in different and contradictory ways depending on context, there is no true answer unless you pick a specific definition of what a hole is. The best formal definition for what a hole is comes from the field of topology. In topology, objects in the same "genus" have the same number of holes. A sphere has genus 0 (no holes), while a doughnut has genus 1 (one hole). You can tell if two shapes are in the same genus if you can deform one shape to get the other without tearing or merging. The shape of a straw can be shortened and thickened to get a doughnut shape, so it is also genus 1 (one hole).

@mher_22 in conclusion, what they're saying is: straws have one hole
