I dealt with this over a decade ago. For three or so years, every few months I had to go in to have my esophagus dilated/stretched out under sedation and take medications to try to relax it so that it wouldn’t continue to cause stricture. Bizarrely, once I had a critical and rare form of bone marrow failure come on years later, I haven’t had any more severe bouts with my esophagus. The human body is wild. All I can figure is that amongst two years fighting for my life with that, one of my treatments or who knows what corrected the esophagus issue. Lol
I'm so sorry for this actor and anyone with this truly debilitating condition! You can definitely see, in some scenes, how much weight he has lost. 😢 I'm glad he is still acting.
Interesting. I had symptoms for about a week after essentially over heating. I could get fluids down, but nothing solid, like I forgot how to swallow. Luckily, it wasn't probably this because I forced down a bowl of soup with rice and it resolved. I cannot imagine how hard it would be to have it last longer. Gubler is one in a million, literally. So glad he persevered for one of the most memorable characters in crime solving.
I had that back in '99 when I lost motility from my mid esophagus down. They performed a surgery where they stretched out my esophagus. To this day, if i bend over after taking a drink of something, it will come back up in my mouth, but I no longer have extreme pain swallowing. I do get reflux often though. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and didnt know it at the time, but I was having MS-type symptoms during that time (which is common in EDS) so mine was probably EDS related. Hope he can get some type of resolution for it because it is very, very painful. Even swallowing your own spit causes massive pain, not to mention having a mound of food stuck in your esophagus. Not fun!
Ive been having this sporadically mostly after a night where I get GERD. As soon as I get rid of whatever is sitting on top of the stomach sphincter it opens normally and I can eat fine.
What kind of role do you want to see Gubler take on next?
My favorite character, so sad he didn't come to the latest season of criminal minds still hope see him in future seasons
Poor baby. I love him. I hope his difficulties become manageable and that he’ll be okay. All the best!
He’s one of my favorite characters on Criminal Minds. Him and “Penelope Garcia”. I can’t imagine the show without them.
So glad he's able to act!
Reid was my favourite character on Criminal Minds.

What was the treatment? Maybe it could be useful to people going through the same

My great aunt had this
I’ve suffered from achalasia for over 10 years. I had surgery 2 years ago, but the problem persists. Not sure what next steps are yet.
I don’t understand this condition, but had tonsillitis so bad I could not even swallow my own saliva! The idiot doctor advised me trying a banana!!!
