- I used General Finishes Gel Stain on my golden honey oak kitchen cabinets to transform them to an antique walnut! With 2 coats of antique walnut, the color does seem to get a little closer to looking like the Java Gel Stain, but its not quite that dark, and its just the color I was looking for. Dark, but not too dark! Join me step by step as I take these old cabinets and turn them into something new!

What grit sandpaper did you use?thank u
I like how you shared your research on what to use and what not to do to make it easier for the next person.
I thought that would be helpful!
Damn! Great job with the work amd the video!👏
This is seriously the best video on gel staining a kitchen that I’ve seen! And I’ve watched many!
I spent 5 hours watching videos on gel staining and I felt really frustrated because they were all saying different things... so I wanted to make sure that my video would be helpful to others. I'm so glad it helped you 😊
It looks gorgeous, I did mine about 2 years ago right before putting our house on the market with the Java color and completely updated the kitchen, I truly believe it helped sell the house faster.
Looks beautiful!
Gorgeous work! 😍🤩👍
Wow 🤩 looks really good! The new stain color matches the blue kitchen backsplash beautifully ❤️
That is exactly the first thought I had after doing this project! 😊
Very helpful video. I'm doing pretty much the same and your video covered all of the little details I wondered about. A+++ great job
It’s awesome 🤩
They came out amazing Ariel…you all did a great work!
Hi Diasy! Thanks! It was hard work I'll tell ya....
That really came out nice the color looks good it looks like new cabinets!
Thanks friend! I definitely think all that hard work was worth the outcome 😊
Ahh great info! You’re so fun to watch!! Winning combo!!
Thanks!! 😊
All I can say is, wow! This looks awesome😍
Thanks Juanetta! 🥰 I'm so glad it does because I'm the one that has to look at them for the next who knows how many years 😂
I never thought about staining cabinets, they look gorgeous! We have honey colored cabinets as well, i rather have grey. I thought about painting but after seeing this i might discuss staining with my husband.
There is grey stain that you can use also
You can also use a ziploc bag to reuse brushes and roller heads...you just let the handle stick out but otherwise have the brush/roller head in the bag, all the air squeezed out, and put it in the fridge until you're ready to use it again. Works like a charm!
looks great! and is something different compared to what everyone is doing. 👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks!
I own a painting Business on Long Island NY absolutely great job!
Thanks Uncle Brian!
This seems like a ridiculous amount of work but it looks sooooo good!!! This was very informative and helpful for anyone wanting to do this! Amazing job!
Thank you! 🙏 I counted up all the hours it took us and in the end it was a full 24 hours of work!
Good video keep up the good work
Thank you!!
Omg this is the EXACT look I'm trying to go for. Thanks for posting
You're welcome! 😊
Wow! Amazing work?
Thanks!!
Thank you for this video! I'm curious how the gel stain is holding up. Have you noticed any chipping, wearing, or anything else?
I tried the sock method and the streaking was so bad it was scary. Second coat, I used a foam roller. It was perfect.
The second coat of stain is what made it look less streaky.
Thanks so much for making this video! How much of the stain and poly did you use? I have about 50% more cabinets so I'm trying to figure out quantities.
I used every last bit of stain in that container with not even a drop to spare! So definitely buy two of the stains. The poly on the other hand, a little goes a long way.
This video is fantastic. I was doing the exact same thing as you; trying to find videos that omitted the sanding step. I found your video on around the 7th video of my research, and I was like, "Awesome, she did all the research for me!" Seriously, you complied hours worth of information into 7 minutes. Impressive! Not only that, the color is exactly what we want in our kitchen. I wish this video was more easily found when searching.
Two quick questions though: Did you sand between coats of poly? Most of the videos I watched included this step. Also, about how long did the entire process take? Thanks!
I really did do so much research, hours and hours!! Sorry it took me so long to see this comment. I actually did not sand in between poly. I didn't find it necessary based on my research. I spent three days doing this, and if you add up all the hours that I wasn't sleeping and actually working, it took me around 22 hours. It's a lot of work but totally worth it!!
Thank you for this instructive video. Please tell me where I can get water-based gel stain! I have looked everywhere.
Amazon! That's where I got it at least.
@@ThatAwkwardMom I guess everyone in AmazonLand has bought up all the water-based gel stain. All I can find is oil based. I'll keep trying! Thanks!
@@joannegainen783 oh that's frustrating. I'm sorry! Good luck 🙏
They look great. Did you wipe off the stain at all? I didn’t see that you did.
@@vickyb9918 I decided not to wipe off the stain, I wanted more of a deep brown.
Hi,
Does this stain have a strong or chemical smell? I've been wanting to do all my cabinets and staircase for 5 yrs now and just never got around to it. Now I have a newborn and am concerned if there's gonna be a strong smell.
Yes stain has a strong smell. It dissipates after a day or so.
"My eyes!"....first laugh April 23 2024 ...thanks Awkward Mom
😨😣☹️
If you're sanding why did you clean? 🤣
Cleaning is necessary. I had a sticky residue on the cabinets where each of the handles were - A couple of them I didn't clean well enough, and even after sanding, the sticky residue was still there. I regret to this day that I didn't clean those ones good enough because I can still see the layer of stickiness even after staining 🙄 Also, for gel staining you don't have to sand down to the wood like you would with regular stain. You only need a light sanding.
Wow you did everything wrong !!! Feel bad for dummies watching this
Yeah lol I think she should’ve just used paint. These will look terrible in a year
@@callumb4980 why? Can you explain what will happen
It will be interesting to see how it stands up. The poly coat will help. Just usually the excess stain is wiped off after a predetermined amount of time not layered up like paint.
